Common Questions and Answers about Warfarin risks

Avatar m tn These visits come with their co-pays and deductibles too! Not to mention that warfarin has significant risks, drug interactions, food restrictions etc. And overall: you have to think of the worse case senario of switching to warfarin having the warfarin be too strong and your wife getting a bleed of some kind. This could be in her GI track, brain etc. and can be very life-threatening and could cause huge hospital bills.
Avatar m tn t know how warfarin is affecting your life style. I have been on warfarin for years and had no concerns about running and bike riding, and using power wood working tools. All of these activities puts one at an increased risk of a cut and bleeding, but I simply take the risk. On the other hand, I don't sky dive, or pick fights ....
Avatar n tn She also has uterine fibroids that have been giving her problems, even more so since the warfarin. Between the uterine fibroids and the warfarin, her menses are extremely heavy. She is on iron because she tends to be anemic around her period. Her periods are so heavy that she can go through 4-6 large pads an hour, sometimes more. She feels like she is going to bleed to death at times and it scares her.
Avatar f tn continue warfarin therapy, withhold warfarin therapy for a period of time before and after the procedure, or temporarily withhold warfarin therapy and also provide a "heparin bridge" during the perioperative period. Which management option to follow is primarily determined by the characteristics of the patient and by the nature of the procedure.
Avatar n tn This is really a question only your doctor/s can answer - they know your complete medical history, other meds and know the risks/benefits of either med. So please contact your doctor for their advice. Best of luck!
Avatar f tn I should also mention that he did try Pradaxa last year and was on it for about 3 days when blood in his stool was noticed. Can you please help educate us on the benefits/risks for these drugs and is one any better or less dangerous for older folks. Thanks in advance for your help.
Avatar n tn I have not heard of such a pattern. Has your husband ever had a 30 day event monitor? This could be very helpful diagnosing the exact rhythm disturbance. As for the need for anticoagulation recommended by Jerry_NJ, this therapy would be warranted only if this were Atrial Fibrillation, which can increase your risk of stroke from the formation of clots. If you have no other risk factors for clot formation, most Dr's will prescribe a full strength aspirin (325mg).
6644456 tn?1383330685 Currently I am taking Plavix and Asprin and now my Doctor wants to start me on Warfarin as well. This suggestion makes me very uncomfortable. I feel that a pacemaker would be a healthier alternative.
Avatar m tn I came close to dying in my second OHS, and I feel that whatever risks are associated with warfarin are less than the risk of a third valve replacement. Good luck with your decision. Whatever valve you get, it will be better than the valve you have.
Avatar m tn I am concerned about possible drug interactions between the antibiotic azithromycin and the two heart medications warfarin and amiodarone. My relative has brief history of heart problems span one and a half years (though the underlying heart condition itself appears to be congenital). Rhythm problems resulted in CHF, hospitalization, and later diagnosis and heart surgery. Subsequent dysrhythmia and CHF has been prevented adequately with medication.

233488 tn?1310693103 While significantly more patients in the warfarin group presented with vitreous hemorrhage associated with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, they didn’t suffer more perioperative or postoperative complications from vitrectomy compared with controls. The authors believe the risks of stopping warfarin are greater than the perceived benefit of reduced complications, and don’t recommend stopping treatment before vitrectomy.
Avatar f tn Given that yesterday he said to not take the warfarin he was changing me from the genertic warfarin and putting me on the brand name of the med coumadin. Said some folks do not tolerate warfarin well but do well on coumadin and i am to start the coumadin today. I would be lying if i didn't say i am a bit gunshy at this point. This med has made me absolutely miserable and today is my 43rd bday...
1796726 tn?1315595748 I really have never worried about bleeding to death. I think the risks from the warfarin are much lower than having a second open heart surgery. There has never been a limit on my activities. You will need to monitor your INR (warfarin level). They recommend having it checked monthly but I get mine checked about every 6 months if that tells you how worried I am about it, but you should get yours checked the first few years (decades?) as recommended.
Avatar f tn Based on the level of risk, most patients are either started on aspirin or Warfarin (Coumadin). Clopidogrel (Plavix) is an anti-platelet agent and acts via a different mechanism than coumadin does (coagulation pathway). Adding Clopidogrel to aspirin is a guideline that holds a Class 2b (see below) recommendation, and usually considered in those in which Warfarin is unsuitable due to patient preference or physician's assessment on a patient's ability to safely sustain anticoagulation.
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with AF 9 months ago. Went on Warfarin and then had a failed cardioversion. Went on Amiodarione and had a 2nd failed cardioversion. Was taken off the Warfarin and Amiodarone and told my AF is permanent and ablation unlikely to work either. Half the time I feel kind of OK ... then I get a few 'bad days' when I feel so dizzy and faint with mild tinnitus in both ears and edema in both feet/ankles. I just lie on bed most of the time until it passes.
Avatar n tn This is exactly what I read in The Coumadin (Warfarin) Help Book. Since my husband has been taking his Warfarin before his evening meal & his INR has been keeping fairly level. And that's good news, we want no more Strokes.
Avatar f tn DOES ANYONE KNOW IF WARFARIN CAN LOWER YOUR BLOOD COUNT AND AND ALSO LOWER CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D LEVELS?
