I had aortic valve replacement in 2001 and had an artificial heart valve installed. The downside to that is I will have to take blood thinners for the rest of my life because of the artificial valve. That is not the case with a tissue valve. It has really not had any affect on me at all. The one thing that I know warfarin affects is Vitamin K. Vitamin K is what causes your blood to clot. Therefore the warfarin cancels out some of the Vit. K to make your blood thinner.
I think your question is "what is the best treament for a-fib"? from what I've learned and observed there is no single best pathway to deal with it. There are different options, as there are different causes for a-fib. Finding the best one is sometimes trial and error.
Plavix will be quite costly for us on a fixed income. Can coumadin (warfarin) be substituted for plavix?
Johnycat, thanks for your comments, but Xarelto is not approved for mechanical heart valve patients such as myself or Dream_ers's father. Plavix is sometimes given to mech valve patients, but when it is, it's used as an adjunct to warfarin and not as a substitute for it. Xarelto, not at all.
Sorry you had so many problems with warfarin.
I have recently been put on Warfarin for Paroxysmal Atrial Fib. I feel miserable and anxious on this drug. They continue to up my dose, 11mg. at present. I have decided to quit the Warfarin but wonder how to go about this. Do I quit cold turkey or taper off? Anyone else has quit Warfarin and how did you do it?
t know how warfarin is affecting your life style. I have been on warfarin for years and had no concerns about running and bike riding, and using power wood working tools. All of these activities puts one at an increased risk of a cut and bleeding, but I simply take the risk. On the other hand, I don't sky dive, or pick fights ....
i an 59 years old and open heart surgery to replace mi mitral valve about two 2 years ago . Now y have a mechanic valve st jude # 31 and i have to take warfarin everyday for the rest of my life . My problem is that after my operation , y have rashes ,smalls cuts and dry skin in my hands , my doctor try 5 different creams , for fungus dry skin ,etc, and nothing change , the told that is not psorirys also, They said it is because i take coumadim .
My specialist has feferred me for an ablation procedure which I am waiting for now. I was put on warfarin and bisoprolol and due to the nature of my work I cannot go back whilst on warfarin as i work offshore. I was wandering why I cant be put on asprin which will at least allow me to pass my medical to return to work after the ablation. I have been off work for 3 months due to this and without pay which is causing me a great deal of stress and anxiety.
While you are on Warfarin - and this would be life-long for you - you are at risk from both under-dosing, which would lead to embolism, and over-dosing, when you could have bleeding from some part of your body, including the brain. Warfarin reduces the serum levels of Vitamin K-dependent clotting factors synthesized in the liver - this is its primary and desired effect. Alcohol also has effects on the liver, and smoking increases the chances of thrombosis and embolism.
I have been given two options a metal valve which i would have to take medication called Warfarin for the rest of my life. Or i could have a pigs valve fitted which i would have to have replaced every 15-17 years. Please could someone help me with the decision of which one to have, i dont like the idear of the medication but is this a wise move thanks!!
Usually people with a history of blood clots will be on warfarin for the rest of their life. Im not sure of any other meds you are taking but dizziness and nausea is a common side effect of many meds. Especially meds for heart and blood pressure. And it has been a hot summer..are you getting enough fluids. Nausea, dizziness and diarrhea are symptoms of heat exhaustion and electrolyte imbalances. Lastly, do you drink alcohol or take drugs recreationally? Suffer from stress or anxiety?
I take warfarin (generic coumadin) and have for about 15 years. I discussed changing to Pradaxa with my cardiologist when that drug first came out, I decided not to use it because of cost (warfarin cost about 12 cents a day) and the fact I do well on warfarin, albeit I have to have my blood coagulation tested once a month. Recently I have seen a lot of "bad news" about Pradaxa including law firm adds looking for new participants in a class action suit, as I understand it...
