1013028 tn?1250923267 Blood clots that form in veins (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism) are mainly made up of clotting proteins and platelets do not play a significant role in venous clots. Coumadin or warfarin is an effective blood thinner that prevens the production of clotting factors in the liver. Anti-platelet drugs like Aspirin or Plavix do not play much of a role in preventing venous clots.
Avatar m tn Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a blood clot of the portal vein, also known as the hepatic portal vein. This vein allows blood to flow from the intestines to the liver. A PVT blocks this blood flow. Although PVT is treatable, it can be life-threatening. https://www.healthline.
Avatar n tn Hi, How are you? Are there other symptoms present? Deep Vein Thrombosis usually involves the formation of a large clot in the deep veins in the lower legs and thighs but may also occur in the area around the armpit and collar bone, in the upper arm, abdomen, or pelvic region. This is a dangerous condition because the clot may become dislodged from the vein and travel inside the vein all the way to the lung, and may create a pulmonary embolism.
Avatar f tn Hi, Coumadin or Warfarin is used to treat blood clots such as in deep vein thrombosis as well as prevent new clots from forming in the body and can be taken orally. On the other hand, Clexane injection is also used to stop blood clots forming within the blood vessels. and is administered by injection under the skin. Indication for each medicine depends on a variety of factors such as your medical history, symptoms present and diagnosis.
Avatar f tn My best friend (25 yrs old) has recently been diagnosed with 'portal vein and superior mesentric vein thrombosis with chronic thrombosis of the inferior vena cava' she also has 'factor v leiden heterozygous'. she has just been declared disabled and is no longer allowed to work. Im trying to work out what this means for her in the long term, ie mortality and morbidity rate and also the chance of her being able to have children. I would appreciate any replies, many thanks.
Avatar m tn From your description of symptoms, it appears that due to clot disorder it may be leading to formation of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) that is a dysfunction of deep valves of veins. Symptoms appear as painful, burning, red, and warm leg. Sometimes DVT can lead to pulmonary embolism, when the clot dislodges from its site and travels to the lungs & appears as chest heaviness. Warm compresses, leg compression, pain killers and warfarin.
Avatar f tn But one would have to ignore the deep-vein thrombosis for a while, for it to develop into a pulmonary embolism. Since DVT is noticeable and hurts, unless the woman was in a place without medical care, the likelihood of death is not high. Sweetheart, are you worried about dying in childbirth? They won't let you. :) Try not to worry.
Avatar n tn If your doctor is uncomfortable with or resistant to any of this, you should request a second opinion with a doctor experienced in the management of deep vein thrombosis and thrombo-embolism. This is not a time for you to be reluctant to request information and consultation. Also, there are National Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of this condition and your doctors should refer to them and adhere to them. Good luck.
738075 tn?1330575844 OK, so I'm recovering from my 3rd attack this year, and last Friday I started having R ankle and leg pain. I figured I had CRPS from all the spasms in my legs. But Nooooo - You ready for this? Deep Venous Thrombosis!! Sheesh, so now I'm on rat poison (Warfarin) for the next 6 months on top of everything else! I really don't think this year can get much worse - thank goodness it's almost over!
Avatar n tn t too sure where to post this, I have been taking a daily dose of tinzaparin for the last 4 months to treat my bilateral pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis, and i have noticed my hairline receding and my overall head of hair thinning.
Avatar f tn Last year I had a stroke at the age of 26, after being diagnosed with Bilateral Pulmonary Emboli with deep vein thrombosis. This cause right side hemiparalisis. Was told it could have been through the birth control i was on. But as i am doing research. I am seeing other things. IS it possible that my tachycardia that i was diagnosed with in 2002 be the problem? Before stroke my bp was 120/80 pulse anywhere from 90 to 140 or higher. after stroke.. and being on warfarin...
Avatar n tn However, focally tender veins can be indicative of thrombophlebitis (actually inflammation of the veins themselves), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or superficial vein thrombosis; all of which should be evaluated by a physician and treated if necessary. Hope you are feeling better.
Avatar m tn Warfarin is already used to prevent and treat blood clots in people with artificial heart valves, deep vein thrombosis, and a host of other conditions. A previous study by the same researchers demonstrated that in Hepatitis C, scarring of the liver accelerates in those patients who are prone to form blood clots. This led the researchers to believe that warfarin's anti-clotting properties might enable the drug to fight the disease.
1488195 tn?1288153991 I'm 85 and have been on Warfarin for 3 years. #1 - Is this the best treatment? #2 - Even taking thinners, can I stroke out at any time?
1445161 tn?1312085507 With little bumps under the skin and aches in her arm, at her age, your mother could be having deep vein thrombosis. This is diagnosed by dopplar ultrasound. Other than that it could also be multiple neurofibromas. Lumpy skin is also seen in hypothyroidism. It could also be due to hormonal imbalance. At her age it is also important for her to go for a breast examination to rule out any lumps in the breast and subsequent inflammation of lymph vessels of the arm.
Avatar m tn If the vein swells and there is pain then it could be due to temporal arteritis, high blood pressure, or deep vein thrombosis. In temporal arteritis ESR is very high. Deep vein thrombosis can be diagnosed by dopplar studies. Also, please get the blood pressure checked. A comprehensive investigation is required keeping all the points in mind. Do discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined. Take care!
Avatar m tn A-fib is not by itself lethal but it does cause other problems. As Rita said asparin doesn't begin to control the clotting problem. When your atria are fibrillating that generates turbulence that can cause clots. If the clot is generated in the right side of your heart then the only place it can go is to your lungs. Google "pulmonary embolism". Not a nice way to go. If the clot is generated on the left side of your heart then the fun really begins.
Avatar n tn contact dermatitis, lymphedema and deep vein thrombosis. If the left hand comes in contact with something that the right hand does not, then this could be the cause of dermatitis. Duplex ultrasounds and color dopplars can help diagnose a deep vein thrombosis or a blocked lymph channel. It is important to examine the left axilla (armpit) and breast for lumps since there is redness and swelling in left arm. Another possibility is infection of the skin called cellulitis.
