942410 tn?1274047074 thanks for that Jerry. Having been on Warfarin when I was AFib my experience is that I didn't like it. Finding the proper doseage can be difficult.
Avatar n tn A simple aspirin is used only if the risk factors are low...we have no idea what your risk factors are, but I can tell you aspirin and warfarin are not equivalent. I have been on 5 mg of Warfarin for about 10 years, and I get my blood tested about once a month. I manage to stay in range (INR 2 to 3) and so checking more often is not necessary. If you continue to have a need for a check every10 days it is reasonable that you look for some better approach. What caused your minor stroke?
Avatar n tn Warfarin doesn't dissolve Blood clots! your body in time absorbs the clots. Warfarin thins the blood to help prevent clots it's used in rat bait after the rats eat the bait they leave the nest to drink and bleed to death and we also consume the rat poison! Did your doctor say why you're on it after three years? I take warfarin because I have to factors for having clots, Prothrombin and Lupus Anticoagulant.
1013028 tn?1250923267 Thrombosis can be prevented with heparin administration and treated with heparin and warfarin. If clots occur heparin followed by warfarin ( coumadin )is usually prescribed. Higher-than-usual doses of warfarin may be needed. Warfarin or Coumadin is prescribed to prevent strokes arising from atrial fibrillation and DVTs forming in the legs usually.
Avatar n tn ginger and glucosamine sulfate will affect coumadin (warfarin) I'm on warfarin and can't take ginger or glucosamine and a host of other supplements.
Avatar m tn Some doctors will prescribe an 81 mg coated tablet of aspirin as an alternative to Warfarin if your risk factors are not that great. My suggestion is to get as many opinions as you can and don't let anyone tell you different. I have had several Cardiologists and EP Dr's who have all had their own unique ways of treating me and each time I have seen improvement with the additional insight. Good luck and God bless!
Avatar m tn I take the aspirin in the morning and the warfarin in the evening. I have at least two risk factors, maybe three given I had mitral valve surgery a couple of years ago.
Avatar f tn or a deficiency of this vitamin reduces the rate at which these factors and proteins are produced, thereby creating a state of anticoagulation. Prescribing the dose that both avoids strokes, etc. sufficient suppression of clots requires a thorough understanding of the drug's unique pharmacology. "For most indications, the dose is adjusted to maintain the patient's International Normalized Ratio (INR) at 2 to 3.
Avatar f tn The American College of Chest Physicians proposed guidelines for antithrombotic prophylaxis in patients with different risk factors, and it recommends that if the annual risk for thromboembolism is low, warfarin therapy can be withheld for 4-5 days before the procedure without bridging.
Avatar n tn In fact there is no other problem except big patch of damaged heart muscles and low ef. Warfarin has its own set of problems and some serious risk factors. On net I find literature both in favour and against warfarin, with some tilt towards warfarin. I am not able to understand: - why a clot should form in my heart when the muscles were damaged six years back and considering that I am on aspirin+clopidogrel which too have anti clotting function.
Avatar f tn m sure there was a clot there also. I was on warfarin for 6 months and I went off it a month ago as the left leg showed to be dissolved and free of the clot. As I went off warfarin the symptoms of tingling/pain, muscle spasm and blood flowing around in my calfs and pooling in my feet worsened. I have been wearing compression hose the whole time and I was told to go to a lighter compression now. the pain is much improved from when I first had the dvt but it is still not gone.
Avatar f tn I had a severe DVT and took warfarin for six months. I was taken off it per my former MD and then had a near-fatal PE from another clot! I was taking aspirin when I had the PE. If you read the literature, even therapeutic levels of warfarin won't guarantee preventing subsequent clots. If I were you, I'd get the second opinion but STAY ON WARFARIN FOR LIFE and make the necessary adjustments. I also have no known genetic predispositions to DVT.
Avatar m tn Sorry to hear about your friends. In my opinion, Warfarin (Coumadin) is a very safe drug as long as the patient RELIGIOUSLY takes it exactly as ordered and goes in for regular lab work as often as the physician orders. That may be weekly in the beginning or at other times when the INR may be unstable. There are a number of medications that can interfere with Warfarin, as well as certain foods. Always ask the pharmacist before taking any new drug, especially over the counter ones.
Avatar m tn It is important that you control you HR, especially your resting HR, should be under 100, better if around 60+. But more important, with AFib you need to guard against the formation of blood clots. A simple aspirin a day (or 1/2 or a low dose) with a meal (I take my 1/2 aspirin with breakfast every morning). If you have other clot risk factors (you didn't give me any, you age is on the margin of being a risk factor) you may need a prescription for an anticoagulant.
Avatar m tn I do not believe the pacemaker guarantees there will be no recurrence of AFib. The question of how much protection is needed depends on risk factors. I'm not sure how a stroke counts in this regard, but the "conjecture" of AFib is one factor...I assume there is no present state of AFib. Again, based on risk factors (usually) doctors may prescribe just the use of aspirin for clot risk reduction.
Avatar n tn Responding both posts. The only thing I have to add is I'd ask the doctor about putting your husband on an anticoagulant, e.g., Coumadin or Warfarin. The rhythm problem doesn't sound very serious to me, compared to what my heart does, but it could cause a clot to form and put him at risk of a stroke.
Avatar m tn While you are on Warfarin - and this would be life-long for you - you are at risk from both under-dosing, which would lead to embolism, and over-dosing, when you could have bleeding from some part of your body, including the brain. Warfarin reduces the serum levels of Vitamin K-dependent clotting factors synthesized in the liver - this is its primary and desired effect. Alcohol also has effects on the liver, and smoking increases the chances of thrombosis and embolism.
Avatar n tn Unknown. Warfarin metabolism normally occurs through the cytochrome P450 (CYP450) isoenzyme system, with excretion occurring in the urine as inactive metabolites. It is postulated that large doses of acetaminophen may "exhaust" the capability of the CYP450 system to metabolize warfarin. Additionally, DARVOCET-N 100 TABLETS may reduce functional factor VII. Management: Monitor coagulation status and adjust the dosage of COUMADIN 4MG TABLETS (BLUE) accordingly.
Avatar f tn a few blood thinner meds like XARELTO, Pradaxa, Eliquis and aspirin. Your daughter has to watch her diet on Warfarin (coumadin). Many foods and supplements can thin the blood! I have 2 genetic factors for having blood clots. Prothrombin gene mutation and Lupus anticoagulants. When they find the gene mutation ask if it's inherited! if so your family and if she has children should be tested to see if they have them! Check the following links! http://www.premieresurgical.
Avatar m tn Enhanced hypoprothrombinemic response to warfarin has been reported in patients with acute alcohol intoxication and/or liver disease. The proposed mechanisms are inhibition of warfarin metabolism and decreased synthesis of clotting factors. Binge drinking may exacerbate liver impairment and its metabolic ability in patients with liver dysfunction. The risk of bleeding may be increased. Conversely, reductions in INR/PT have also been reported in chronic alcoholics with liver disease.
