Warfarin and amiodarone

Common Questions and Answers about Warfarin and amiodarone

Avatar m tn I am concerned about possible drug interactions between the antibiotic azithromycin and the two heart medications warfarin and amiodarone. My relative has brief history of heart problems span one and a half years (though the underlying heart condition itself appears to be congenital). Rhythm problems resulted in CHF, hospitalization, and later diagnosis and heart surgery. Subsequent dysrhythmia and CHF has been prevented adequately with medication.
Avatar m tn I was put on amiodarone for Long QT and 32 R/T events shown by 24-hour Holter. Heart steadied in 6 months but after a year TSH showed 38 and amio was changed to propafenone. Four ECGs and thyroid test in last six months show normal. But symptoms continue: Pre-syncope, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, 6 to 10 days a month. My cardiologist is alarmed by the pre-syncope.he suggests : another Holter, return to amiodarone, see electrophysiologist, EEG for brain conduction.
Avatar n tn I was to take one daily and my cardiologist would determine when I should come off Amiodarone. I took Amiodarone for 62 days. My cardiologist took several EKGs and Echo’s and determined there was no Afib so I came off Amiodarone. I was doing real well in recovery and finished my cardio rehab. A month later I started to get some shortness of breath and a racing heart beat. We both agreed that I should go back on Amiodarone.
Avatar f tn here I assume you mean using electric shock, works great for many of us and no need for Amiodarone. The Amiodarone is also a method of cardioversion, and it worked. It may be that given her history it may be possible to put her on something softer, like propafenone/rhythmol or just a beta blocker. Did they put her on a anticoagulant?
Avatar m tn Afib is a very dangerous condition, it can and often leads to a stroke, so often an ablation is used to get the heart back beating correctly, as Ed and claytex mentioned. Amiodarone is a drug that is extremely effective in getting the heart to beat regularly, but as claytex mentioned, it has side effects. However, danger of a stroke trumps the side effects of the drug. I went into Afib after bypass surgery and was administered Amiodarone, and it stopped the Afib within twenty-four hours.
Avatar m tn Since open heart surgery in 1995 I have had episodes of afib that had been controlled by medication. Initially the medication was Rythmol and eventually Amiodarone. Approximately five years ago I required cardioversion to regain normal sinus rhythm which was sustained until a year later when I again went into afib requiring cardioversion again.
Avatar m tn After the op. she was put on amiodarone, digoxin and furosemide. While the MVR appeared successful the maze did not kick in, experiencing irregular heartbeats cica 90 p.m. She then had cardioversion a few days ago; her heart rhythm appears to have regularised but her pulse rate has dropped to 42-46 p.m. and she has lost a lot ef energy. She has been taken off all medication except warfarin (5 mg pd) Where do we go from here?
Avatar m tn I am 69 years old and had a mitral valve repair last September, immediately following which I was in atrial fibrillation and given Amiodarone and Warfarin. This has now settled and I now have first degree heart block and am doing a cardiac rehab programme. My resting heart rate is 80 and my target exercise range is 101 - 113 but it only goes up to 98 during exercise (15 on Borg scale). Can you suggest what is causing this and what the implications / remedies may be.
Avatar f tn My mother has a pacemaker and is taking Amiodarone and Warfarin (all since 11th January). She is 85 and was in remarkably good health, despite her arrhythmia. Up until 11th January she was walking two miles a day, and gardening, now she is too weak to go anywhere. She had not taken any drugs for her arrhythmia prior to the Amiodarone. Since mid February, she has been coughing a great deal and is becoming increasingly breathless.
Avatar n tn My wife has had Ablation 5 days ago and feels like a new person She is still on Toperol and Amiodarone they said this will be for about a month and then the last thing to come off will be Warfarin in three months . Is this normal for all you having ablation.?
Avatar m tn I have been in Afib for 3 years straight now and I have also been on Warfarin for that same period of time. Some doctors will prescribe an 81 mg coated tablet of aspirin as an alternative to Warfarin if your risk factors are not that great. My suggestion is to get as many opinions as you can and don't let anyone tell you different.
Avatar m tn Hello I'm a 42 year old male, I was diagnosed as Atrial fibrillation, I'm getting ECG done every time I visit the doctors office, my ECHO came out with severely dilated left atrium, my ejection fraction was 24%, I'm on various medication, losartin potassium, warfarin, amlodipine, amiodarone, metoprolo and furosemide... I had a cardioversion procedure on June 27, 2011 but a week ago, we found out it went back, so we are planning on doing another cardioversion in 1.5 months.
Avatar f tn She was on Amiodarone for about 2 months, but stopped it due to concerns about side effects. Should she back on Amiodarone again now that she has Enlarged Heart and Heart Valve leakage? Are there any other alternative of Amiodarone that has little/no side effects? Sorry for a lot of questions. I'm in panic and hope the expert doctors here could kindly help my family - THANK YOU! V.Q.

Avatar f tn Im 47 & have permanent af -on 14mg warfarin and bisoprolol. Had 2 dc cardioversions which lasted hours and a few days before ectopics with sinus followed by full af set in thereafter. Have slight LV hypokinesis. now AADs suggested sotalol/flecanide. Im concerned about proarrhythmias and toxicity. High Warfarin dose and resistance to remain in sinus suggests to me that Id need quite a high sotolol dose too.
Avatar m tn I have been treated for A Fib and currently take a quarter of a 200MG tablet of amiodarone HCL.
Avatar m tn About 6 weeks ago I got AF with an erratic heart rate between 80 and 140. My cardiologist put me on Carvedilol beta blocker and Digoxin, and two weeks ago I went onto Warfarin in prep for an electric cardioversion. Three days ago I had the cardioversion, but reverted back to AF last night. My cardiologist did say that we would "give it one try only and if I reverted back quickly then that is what my body wants to do and I would have to live with it".
Avatar n tn I had my first episode of afib last week, prior to that I have been having issues with them regulating my blood pressure medicine. Currently I am on amiodarone 200 mg once a day and norvasc 2.5 mg and 12.5 mg of hctz and one xarelto a day. The problem I am having is when I walk across the room from the chair to the bathroom my BP jumps up to 170/90 and makes the back of my head feel full and I get a little dizzy. Do I need to switch BP meds ?
378273 tn?1262097621 If the Amiodione stops the AFib you should be able to run better.... that is if the side effects are not too bad. If you are running while in AFib and you take Metoprolol (in any dose over 50 mg) you should be able to run through anything. Good luck.
Avatar f tn taking amiodarone, warfarin, bendroflumethiazide and candesartin, got chronic anxiety about, drank 3 pints today , got bad headache on top of head. not a regular occurrence, could alcohol be responsible for headache?
Avatar m tn When my husband got atrial fibrillation and his Cardiologist wanted to put him on Amiodarone, I was well-versed enough to question the decision and he went on Flecainide instead. From the research I did when my husband had AFib (since cured with ablation), I was given to understand that Amiodarone is often used as a last-ditch attempt when other avenues have already been pursued. Flecainide is a better option if you can take it.
378273 tn?1262097621 ) I am now in constant Afib since surgery for 3 ankle fractures after a fainting episode. I take warfarin and metoprolol. Had one cardiovert which didn't take. Cardio wants to put me on amiodarone and do another cardiovert which I don't really want. Ablation not an option according to cardio. My question is, can I still jog with slow low EF? I feel much better now.
Avatar m tn Went on Warfarin and then had a failed cardioversion. Went on Amiodarione and had a 2nd failed cardioversion. Was taken off the Warfarin and Amiodarone and told my AF is permanent and ablation unlikely to work either. Half the time I feel kind of OK ... then I get a few 'bad days' when I feel so dizzy and faint with mild tinnitus in both ears and edema in both feet/ankles. I just lie on bed most of the time until it passes.
Avatar n tn The only listed interactions Orlistat has with other medications is a heart rhythm control medication known as Amiodarone, a thyroid medication known as Levothyroxine, Fat soluble vitamins, and the blood thinner known as Warfarin. Additionally, if you have taken Orlistat and oral contraceptive pills before with no changes the likelihood of the combination having an effect on your cycle this month is very small. I would consult your OB/GYN or your regular physician about your concern.
