Avatar m tn I also take Ranexa. I have had very little angina since getting a pacemaker and taking Ranexa, both happened at the same time, as well as a Lasix prescription. I love grapefruit, but have no interest in spitting on Superman's cape, so to speak. No grapefruit for me. I have no idea why grapefruit isn't recommended with Ranexa, but I'm not interested in tempting fate. I will mention, I have no light-headed problems.
Avatar f tn thanks Research about the interaction of grapefruit juice with drugs suggests that compounds in grapefruit juice, called furanocoumarins (for example, bergamottin), may be responsible for the effects of grapefruit juice. Researchers believe that furanocoumarins block the enzymes in the intestines that normally break down many drugs. One glass of grapefruit juice could elicit the maximum blocking effect, and the effect may persist for longer than 24 hours.
Avatar m tn //www.merck.com/product/usa/pi_circulars/v/vytorin/vytorin_pi.pdf EMedTV has an article that explains some statins are associated with high liver enzymes. It says increases in liver enzymes occur in 1.7 percent of people taking Vytorin. This increase appears to be more prevalent in people who are taking higher doses. It goes on to explain other causes of high liver enzymes.
Avatar f tn Crestor is a statin (rosuvastatin calcium) only, Vytorin is a statin (Simvastatin) with Zetia (ezetimibe). Statins work by controlling the production of cholesterol in your liver while Zetia works by preventing cholesterol to be absorbed in your digestive system. Of the two, Crestor is the stronger of the two. In addition, recent trials have shown that adding Zetia does not improve the performance of Vytorin over Simvastatin alone.
Avatar m tn He took me off the Vytorin and put me on Zocor with same results. After stopping all meds and getting a colonoscopy and blood tests nothing was found. He now states I have IBS and put me on SSRI Citalopram. HELP! This discussion is related to Possible side effect of Lipitor and Vytorin on Liver / Body.
Avatar m tn After recent cath my doctor changed my medication from vytorin ,have taken vytorin for 5 years, to lovastatin. I did ask for a cheaper medicine and lovastatin was what he came with. I have no problems or side effects . My question is lovastatin less effective then other of the same and if not why is it not used often. My engineering background comes out if I d not have proper data.
Avatar f tn ALS is a progressive motor neuron disorder with symptoms such as difficulty walking or standing, difficulty with fine motor skills and muscle paralysis. The FDA is examining the feasibility of performing additional epidemiologic studies to further examine the incidence and clinical course of ALS in patients taking statins. This is something you may wish to discuss with your doctor also.
1846163 tn?1331048748 I am cures Ty on Vytorin and will be starting therapy soon, I have read that someone on a cholesterol lowering drug should not be on this drug. Can you tell me why?
Avatar f tn I have been on Vytorin for a few years and my insurance company will not pay for it anymore. My doctor has switched me to Simvastatin (40mg) daily. My question is has anyone else made the switch and have they noticed any side-effects?
Avatar f tn Vytorin is a statin that lowers LDL and raises HDL. I believe Vytorin is a combination of Zetia and Zocor. I am not sure if the Vytorin will go with the Niaspam so you will need to ask your doctor that.
Avatar f tn i was taking vytorin and plavix when i was told i have cll .
Avatar m tn Someone suggested that I consider inner imaging screening (EBT Hart scan). I am on Lipitor and Vytorin, I was taken off of Benicar two months ago because of the back pain and an elevated CPK 200's. Recent blood test revealed my cholesterol at 118 but my CPK at 205 and still experiencing lower back back pain. My blood pressure is 110/70 to 120/80. No prior hart problems. Do you think I should consider this image screening?
Avatar f tn Zoloft is one of the drugs that can cause big danger to the liver if used with grapefruit. There are others too but this one is especially common to people on interferon/riba. I sure don't want anyone to make this mistake. There are anti depressants that are safe with grapefruit-Celexa is one of them. I called a pharmacist to confirm this and they said it was a big no-no and quite dangerous even if you don't have liver problems.
Avatar f tn Hey Jean. I just joined myself but have been HCV for (by my estimate 21 years now). I won't say it can't be incredibly hard. There's the social stigma, coming to terms with the fact you have it and then the telling of family and friends, not to mention dating and that's just the emotional side. A good place to start is educating yourself about transmission, that way you can feel confident in yourself that you can protect those you love and encounter.
Avatar m tn You can search to see if Vytorin studies have shown that it helps reduce cholesterol deposits on heart muscle. Vytorin is a combination, I believe, of Zocor and Zetia. Zocor should help with the cholesterol already there. If not, Lipitor has studies showing that Lipitor at 40mg can help reduce cholesterol on heart valves and in arteries. If it reduces cholesterol there, it may reduce cholesterol on the heart muscle. Cholesterol builds in the arteries, valves and muscle of the heart.
Avatar f tn Hi again, Regarding vytorin, it is a combo of zetia and zocor. There was a study that said that although the Vytorin will lower the cholesterol, it didn't have good effects to prevent heart attacks. Howeverk, Crestor was shown to reduce plaque and had better results in clinical studies. Also, with the Niaspan, it is known to raise HDL level but HDL is not necessarily protective as they thought. But that study may be skewed because it was done on all cardiac patients.
Avatar n tn My understanding is that grapefruit can interact and increase the effect of Zoloft and Prozac but not paxil. The protein involved with Paxil is not affected by grapefruit. You can ask your local pharmacist about this as well.
Avatar n tn Studies have found no links to incremental side effects with long term use. Your dosage is quite small, most all side effects occur with doses of 80 mg per day. Just make sure to get your blood tested annually to make sure there are no changes in your liver enzymes.
Avatar f tn Is grapefruit OK to eat for breakfast everyday? I tried to Google but no good answers. I know it is acidic, but I don't think harmful. Just want to make sure.
Avatar f tn After a trip to the ER, because of severe pain in my kidney area, they could not find a cause for this and sent me home with an injection of Dilaudid. I was fine, but after another Vytorin tablet the next evening the pain came back with a vengeance and I was done with Statins for the rest of my life.
Avatar m tn This, initially the drug does not completely metabolize and has an extended half-life. This why it is dangerous to take grapefruit juice with certain medications. Follow me on this. You take a substance that reduces the production of these enzymes (say grapefruit juice) and for the first four hours the drug does not fully metabolize. After six hours the grapefruit juice wears off, the liver again starts producing these enzymes, and you take a second dose of the medication.
Avatar m tn //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grapefruit%E2%80%93drug_interactions I avoid grapefruit because it interacts with simvastatin and oxycodone. If you are taking other medications please check with the respective provider and the pharmacist about interaction with grapefruit.
Avatar n tn I would ask your family doctor if you can eat grapefruit while taking Azor. With some drugs, eating grapefruit is actually dangerous.
Avatar m tn I have some Lipitor in the cabinet and my doc is going to put me on Vytorin in 11 days. I was trying to avoid a new Rx of Simva since I have a cupboard full of comparable meds and will be starting Vytorin soon. I can't get a hold of my doc for a week. Just wondering if anyone knew of any bad reactions, a required layoff before switching, etc. Thank you very much.
