Common Questions and Answers about Vioxx and bextra

vioxx

Avatar m tn There are three different COX-2 inhibitors currently available to the public– Vioxx, Celebrex and Bextra. COX-2 inhibitors have been associated with some liver dysfunction, although not as commonly as other NSAIDs. Recently, Vioxx has been removed from the market due to heart-related problems. Celebrex and Bextra are currently being investigated for similar heart-related toxicities. It is recommended that people with liver disease avoid using all NSAIDs.

Avatar n tn I have had three surgeries on my left eye (SLT, filtration, and then lazer cutting of filtration sutures to keep pressures low.), by a well known glaucoma specialist. After each surgery, my vitreous became 'looser' and more floaters erupted. Before each surgery, I asked the surgeon if the procedures would cause vitreous excitation, and each time he said no. Well, not so.
Avatar m tn Celebrex is the only medication that does not go down the COX-1 pathway very much. Others were developed (Vioxx and Bextra), but then recalled due to issues with people having heart problems. So, if you do not have GI bleeding or an ulcer, you may want to ask your doctor about other NSAIDS. Mobic (the generic name is meloxicam) is a great alternative, because it is generic and has less GI/ulcer problems than most of the NSAIDS. Ultimately, you should see what your doctor thinks is best for you.

Avatar n tn Hi. I am a 59 yr old male. Hearing aids made no difference. Dentist last month couldn't freeze my gums with 2 needles of Carbocaine. 7mm nodule on thyroid. Blood tests TSH 2.15 ( range .465 to 4.68 ) FT4 11.17 ( range 10 to 28.2 ) Total T3 2.02 ( range .92 to 2.
Avatar n tn But this time I am going to ask the GP to try for Gout immediately (VIOXX and/or Allopurinol for Uric Acid/Gout). I notice it seems to reoccur every 5 years. Advice appreciated?
Avatar n tn I had a DVT that went through my heart and into my lungs(PE). A valve was damaged, also one chanber of my heart. My problem is that I wasn't diagnosed as a "heart attack", but rather a "pulmonary embolism", and the lawyers representing me in my vioxx lawsuit say it has to be a heart attack, not a PE. Isn't a heart attack part of a PE? Rather, did I suffer a heart attack as well as a pulmonary embolism?
Avatar f tn As independent studies started to show a correlation between Vioxx and an increase risk of heart attack and stroke, the NIH funded the VIGOR study I believe in 2001 at the request of the Arthritis Advisory Committee to determine if there was indeed a link. What they discovered was that all NSAIDS increased the risk for heart attack and stroke with Vioxx being the worst.
182884 tn?1259312906 I have been taking Methadone since 2003-2004 ( Methadone makes your brain foggy among other things....) and it does nothing for other pains. At one time I was on Viox and then Bextra and they were both taken off the market. My dr. recently put me on Celebrex, and I am now wondering if this medicine is appropriate anymore for someone in my condition, who has had an MI? I was under the impression that it was ok to take unless you had underlying heart disease. Do I now fit that category?
Avatar f tn Something else to think about is that they warn you that if you are allergic to sulfonamides you should not take drugs like Celebrex since they do contain sulfonamides. Celebrex, Bextra and another one on the market that I can't think of right now fall into this category.
Avatar n tn i have hbv and am on viread i also have sciatic nerve pain, what is the best pain reliver for me to take for this?
Avatar n tn ive bin having bad pain and cant function normal .im always in pain and my two arms go numb to the fingers. i take vioxx, a pain patch, and neurotin. but that doesent seem to be helping its going on two years and im going mad, what can i do.
Avatar f tn Thank you for your reply. I was looking it up online today and saw a lot of things linking relief of MS symptoms with Marijuana. There HAS to be more people on here that have tried it or know someone who has. Hopefully we hear more! It's an interesting topic.
Avatar m tn t stop the vics), that being aside, you should read the warning leaflet and decide for yourself if the side effects are worth it. I was given vioxx years ago, read the warnings about heart attacks and such, and threw them all in the trash! Not much later it was pulled from the market. If I lost a loved one, $$ isn't going to bring the back anyway, it's all stupid. If I do myself in, I guess I will come back and haunt the manufacturers....BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...........
Avatar f tn And there were a couple small, preliminary studies a few years back that showed that Vioxx and other COX-2 inhibitors taken in low dosage (1/4 to 1/2 normal dosage, if memory serves) could help lessen platelet drop-age during interferon tx. Now, of course, Vioxx has been withdrawn from the market by Merck due to potential increased risk of myocardial infarction and stroke.
Avatar f tn neurontin and lyrica for nerve pain, aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, celebrex, vioxx, midol, dozens of different types of opiates both synthetic and derived from the poppy, marijuana, kava, willow bark, turmeric, ginger, benzos, nitrous oxide gas, ether, and that's just again not even thinking hard about it.
Avatar f tn In that same period of time, 490,000 people have died from prescription drugs, not counting the Vioxx scandal. That means that prescription drugs in this country are at least 16,400 percent deadlier than terrorism. Again, those are the conservative numbers. A more realistic number, which would include deaths from over-the-counter drugs, makes drug consumption 32,000 percent deadlier than terrorism. But the scope of "Death by Medicine" is even wider.
429432 tn?1343594190 Years ago, she gave me Vioxx, I read the warning leaflet and threw the pills in the trash. I was right, they were pulled off the market later on. I'm not sure about this either...
Avatar m tn The products in question are Temodar (temozolomide) for brain cancer and hepatitis C and cancer drugs PegIntron (pegylated interferon alfa-2b) and Intron A (interferon alfa-2b), according to Merck's just-published quarterly report. All three of the drugs were acquired when Merck bought Schering-Plough in 2009.
Avatar m tn Since those days I get flare-ups of same old gb like pain only not as severe, and tolerable, but annoying as heck. They show up a few months apart and last at least 10 days. I am currently dealing with a flare up that's lasted 14 days. I am scheduling an apt with doc. Old doc said that scar tissue and bowel motility can cause irritation. Do any of your patients experience this? Bentyl was prescribed and I am not sure if it really helps.
233622 tn?1279334905 I WAS SCARED AND MISERABLE. I SHOULD HAVE WENT TO THE E.R. BUT I KNEW IT WAS THE MEDICATION AND THAT IT WOULD WEAR OFF. I FIGHT THESE MEDICATION FEARS ALL OF THE TIME. I SUFFER IN PAIN BECAUSE I AM AFRAID OF PAIN MEDS. I GO TOO LONG WITH OUT AN ANTIBIOTIC BECAUSE I AM AFRAID OF AN ALLERGIC REACTION. I HAVE HAD MILD REACTIONS IN THE PAST. ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS PROBLEM? WHAT DO I DO? I AM ABOUT TO START SOME PRETTY BIG MEDS AND AM WORRIED.
Avatar m tn Years ago I tried Vioxx (the non-sulpha version of Celebrex) and wound up in the ER with dangerously high BP. Trouble is, even after I stopped Vioxx my BP never went back to normal. Now I'm on two different BP meds to control it. (Full disclosure: I also have a family history of hypertension.) I took meloxicam for a long time because I could take it along with my BP meds, but eventually my stomach couldn't take it anymore.
Avatar f tn pylori infection, smoking, cyclooxygenase inhibitor medication ie)Celebrex, Vioxx, Bectra, also potassium chloride, chemotherapeutic agents, and bisphosphonate classification of medications.
182884 tn?1259312906 I have been on Methadone for the past 5 years and also take Lortab for break through pain and also Celebrex and have a TENS unit. I have been to lots of specialist and everyone reccomends different things which Workmans Comp seldom will pay for. Finally After almost 8 years I get to go back to the Neurosurgeon to discuss surgery options on the 20th of April. following is my MRI results condensed. at L3-L4 there is a diffuse posterior disc bulge without evidence of hernation.
