Varenicline and serotonin

Common Questions and Answers about Varenicline and serotonin

chantix

Avatar f tn You are talking about Chantix (Varenicline tartrate) that should be available worldwide. If not, ask your doctor for other suggestion for quitting smoking.
Avatar f tn Hello, Chantix (varenicline) and Zyban (bupropion) are the only two non-nicotine medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for smoking cessation; both are available in pill form and only by prescription. Chantix received FDA approval in 2006; Zyban was approved in 1997. These drugs can be effective tools, but users need to be aware of some potentially serious side effects. You can try that and they are very cheap in some pharmacy's.
Avatar f tn s or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and SNRIs, serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors do not actually increase the amount of serotonin molecules in the brain. SSRI’s are thought to block the reabsorption (reuptake) of serotonin by certain nerve cells in the brain. This theoretically leaves more serotonin available in the brain. However if you have low serotonin to begin with these medications either will not work well, or work for a while then "poop out".
Avatar f tn Has anyone used Remeron for depression, while taking Maxalt for their migraines? I have migraines about every other day, and take 5mg maxalt for them. I was just given Remeron for depression, as the doc said i cannot take any SSRI's because of serotonin syndrome. I cannot find and interactions for Remeron, but just wondering if anyone else has tried these together. Any info appreciated.
Avatar f tn So again, were you diagnosed as having serotonin syndrome? And sex and exercise have nothing to do with this, serotonin syndrome usually occurs when someone mixes different drugs that target serotonin receptors, which to my knowledge Robitussin does not.
Avatar f tn My doctor prescribed me both and so far i have only taken the buspar. I have read taking both could cause serotonin syndrome and scared to take the doxepin. I take 15mg x 3 daily of buspar and was given 50 mg of doxepin to take at bedtime.
Avatar f tn In the brain without an ssri the body breaks down used serotonin with an enzyme and then makes more. With an ssri serotonin is directed to targeted receptor sites, which differ depending on the medication, and breakdown is prevented so the serotonin washes around longer in the targeted sites. Other sites, in turn, shut off because the brain doesn't see them as necessary anymore. You have the same amount of serotonin, it's just hanging around longer in the targeted receptors.
Avatar f tn Thanks so much for the info. I'm glad to hear you do not stop making serotonin and I know to go slow. I'm now at 2mg and still cutting slowly. It will take me quite a while to get to nothing. I have been working at this for about 2 years. Just in case you think I'm nuts, it is precisely because I stopped prozac at under 4 mg and it threw me into the worst depression I have ever known that I am going so slowly. Plus I have had a few events that had to put dropping on hold.
Avatar m tn There's no evidence anyone has more or less serotonin than anyone else. What ssris do is prevent the breakdown of serotonin so it soaks the neuron longer in it. This isn't the natural way the body acts, but these meds have helped many people. But whether you want to take them or not, or need them or not, is up to you. They won't cure you, they will only mitigate the symptoms you're having. If there is a cure, it's through therapy.
Avatar f tn If you took something else that increased serotonin, it could be dangerous, and cause what is called Serotonin Syndrome, which can be fatal. For that reason, amino acid remedies for opiate withdrawal symptom relief such as 5HTP and SAM-E, and anything else that may have a simular effect must be avoided. It can also cause sexual dysfunction. But it can also prevent premature ejaculation problems. Hey I'm not thinking that! LoL! Klonopin is a benzo as other have said.
Avatar f tn it is twice a day, i take for depression and hope to help on stop smoking and lossing weight and the Tramadol(not prescribed for me) 50mg taking for pain and hope weight loss. I do not even know if it is safe. buuuuuuuut anywaay. funny you are sunny66, I am mary66.......
Avatar f tn i was wondering if anyone had any bad reactions or anything good to say about either one.. and if it seem to make a difference with the serotonin and norepenphrine.. compared to just serotonin.. and did anyone else have headaches that affected there vision with depression??

Avatar f tn I am working on alternative pain management methods, and getting the courage up to dump the pills once and for all.
653169 tn?1303446369 My doc recently changed me from prozac to Savella since I have alot of muscular, nerve, and joint pains. I stopped the Savella because it was making me feel faint and just weird and on top of it did not help my depression, but it did stop my nerve (including sciatica type pains). Has anyone else had similar side effects with Savella and is it possible to take prozac with Savella?
Avatar f tn t pass the brain blood barrier but 5-hydroxytryptophan will and is a precursor for Serotonin. Need to be careful when using it if Bipolar as it can trigger mania or serotonin syndrome but is very helpful otherwise. I also binge as well, looking for other things that may help suppress my appetite. I heard chromium sometimes helps as well.
454371 tn?1221297385 The pharmacist told me that you are at a higher risk of seizure and serotonin sydrome if you take ultram and a SSRI and commented about wondering why the doctor prescribed it. My NEW doctor today told me there is no way you should use them both, and told me to ditch (flush) the ultram and that someone on an SSRI or SSNI should in no way be taking that medication with ultram or ultracet. I flushed mine down the toilet today.
397118 tn?1219762250 5HTP-- this is what tryptophan gets turned into prior to being turned into serotonin in our brains. Serotonin is what is usually depleted if we are depressed and anxious..
Avatar m tn There are differing opinions on this. On the one hand, it might ease the transition.
1345272 tn?1276400328 Taking both medications will work on all your monoamines that is serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine and especially norepinephrine since both Cymbalta and Wellbutrin are workin on the reuptake inhibition of norepinephrine (noradrenaline, see the link with energizing and analgesic effect now?). I think the cocktail should be working just fine.
Avatar m tn Neither a doctor nor a pharmacist is trained in natural medicine so neither would have a clue if this is safe or not. I'm glad tryptophan is helping you, but it's not very efficient in crossing the blood/brain barrier as a supplement. Also consider that the body makes what it needs and flushes out what it doesn't, unlike antidepressants that target serotonin which force certain receptors to keep using serotonin instead of breaking it down and excreting it.
Avatar m tn The problem is finding the cause or causes but at the end of the symptoms and causes of serotonin deficiency is general info to help boost serotonin. When you reach a serious state of serotonin deficiency suicidal thoughts occur as I unfortunately know from experience.
Avatar f tn You mentioned that you are using Xanax, which is by the way, a very sedative drug which will knock down any stimulating effect you might look for from any drug you might be taking. Prozac is not a stimulant at all and will only affect you serotonin reuptake inhibition. See, serotonin, in contrary to dopamine (triggered by amphetamines) is most likely to knock you down as will do any serotonin acting drug.
Avatar f tn I was away for the weekend and forgot to bring my Trazadone with me and my friend suggested I go to a health food shop to see if they had something to help me sleep. I was recommended Magnesium and 5HTP - to be taken together which I started taking a few days ago. Today I started feeling very depressed and couldn't figure out why until I spoke to a friend who said I shouldn't be combing 5HTP and anti-depressants. Is that true?
