Valtrex reduce transmission

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex reduce transmission

valtrex

Avatar f tn since Acyclovir also suppresses the HSV-2 virus, is it likely that it will also reduce the risk of transmission? Or, is Valtrex a more effective drug and should I consider switching to that?
Avatar f tn lysine isn't effective for herpes. we don't recommend it. if you have a regular partner who you are trying to reduce the risk of transmission to, then take valtrex every single day. If you don't currently have a partner and aren't having any painful recurrences, no reason to take it at this time. make sense?
Avatar n tn If she takes Valtrex, to what degree with that reduce transmission to a partner? I have difficulty with condoms so my preference is to be in a monogamous relationship where both partners are tested and can have sex safely and freely. She has herpes, we think (getting retested next week) but I do not. Is valtrex a viable solution? Are there other solutions? Thank you!
Avatar m tn We have not had intercourse and I am wondering what the percentage rate of transmission is with or without a condom in this situation, so we can make this decision together. Is there anything he can take, like cimitidiine or lysine or valtrex to reduce the chance of transmission? Thanks for your help.
Avatar f tn If you have HSV2 and are concerned about transmission, then I would stick to 500mg. These levels have been shown to reduce shedding considerably and reduce transmission chances.
Avatar f tn I have started daily Valtrex to reduce the risk of transmission to him. After much discussion, he has agreed, reluctantly, to find out his status. If he's positive for HSV 2, I'll discontinue the med. If he's negative I will keep taking it. I got your book recently and will I'm sure get a lot of information (and much needed strategies for getting my head around this) from the book. Two final questions for you: 1.
Avatar f tn If I have a genetal herpes and my partner doesn't, i do want to keep it that way. By taking valtrex it doesn't 100% prevent the transmission, so they say we have to use condoms, which we don't prefer. So, my Question is how effective the Valtrex is and do you have anything else to recommend to prevent transmission without using condoms. Thanks.
Avatar f tn From my calculations a woman using condoms and valtrex can reduce the likelihood of transmission to about 1% if she abstains from sex during outbreaks. For men this is about 2.5%.
Avatar n tn Grace, I know the stats show that if you use condoms, suppressive therapy (valtrex), and no sexual activity during obvious outbreaks that it will reduce the rate of transmission to 1%. Have you ever heard from ANYONE in that 1% category who acutally transmitted HSV even after using ALL precautions?
Avatar f tn It may help with symptoms, but no studies have been done for transmission. If you are looking to reduce transmission to partners, the only known ways to reduce that are to use antivirals (Valtrex, acyclovir, famvir) and condoms, along with avoiding sexual activity when you have any symptoms. If you are looking to reduce outbreaks, studies are mixed for this. Here's a very small study that showed promise - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
Avatar m tn I am HSV-2 positive and my girlfriend stopped using condoms last week. Our relationship is still relatively new (about 8 months), so we're still having sex at least 2 or 3 times per day. I am taking 500 mg of Valtrex daily, and I know that's supposed to reduce risk of transmission by about 48% down to 4-5% per year. And this is supposedly more protection than a condom offers (around 40% reduced risk, I believe).
Avatar n tn There is no definate way to stop transmission completely but there are measures to reduce the risk considerably, one is abstaining from sex during an outbreak ( if you were to have anymore ) or using condoms, the other is Suppressive Therapy which would mean taking the Valtrex every day to minimise the risk of transmission and outbreaks. It is indeed possible that transmission may never take place but it would be best to try to minimise the risk as much as possible.
Avatar m tn Should I assume this is a part of the 4% transmission to male, over a year period when no outbreaks?, then reduce it to 2% since on Valtrex, then increase it to 3% since she was having her period? So is it fair to say that if I were to do this 2x/week for a year, my risk would be 3%? 3. Have you ever heard of a case where someone got HSV-2 from the above facts? Thank you.
Avatar n tn I want to take anti-virals to reduce transmission risk, and I will practice safe sex with condom use. Do all anti-virals reduce transmission risk, or is Valtrex the only one as is claimed by the manufacturer? Do I risk damage to my kidneys if I take this drug at a 500 milligram dose daily for long term use and is it effective long term? (I understand the study was for eight months, so there is no information on long-term effect after a year on Valtrex. What about other anti-virals?
Avatar f tn There's some evidence that Valtrex works better than cutting transmission by 50%. That's the least amount of reduction you'll get. Your partner could still contract HSV2 with you on Valtrex (especially if you have sex while you are experiencing symptoms), but the risk is really low. Like 2% a year or something. Never heard of Valtrex causing yeast problems, but grace would know the answer to that one. I wouldn't waste my money on lysine.
Avatar m tn Well valtrex is generic now everywhere so it shouldn't be a money issue for most folks if they have decent prescription coverage with their insurance. Acyclovir is still way cheaper but if you have insurance coverage that makes generics low cost, valtrex is, as of this month, going to be WAY cheaper for you now :) the technicality to the answer to your question is this - only valtrex has been studied for reduction in transmission to a partner.
Avatar n tn What are your thoughts on the usefulness of taking L-Lysine as a daily supplement to combat HSV and reduce transmission? I’ve heard of creams you can put on your skin to reduce the likelyhood of STD transmission (effective for a few hours to days), are any such products coming to market that you know of? What are your thoughts on the likelihood of a vaccine becoming available in the next few years?
Avatar f tn hi i have had hsv2 now for the past 3 years with very few ob like 2 a year so i stop ta king valtrex after my 2 year but started back 2 days prior to the incident while having condom protected sex with a women the condom broke i pulled out within 5 sec can anybody tell me the chance of transmitting to her i am very worried
Avatar m tn 3) The risk of transmission is markedly reduced when the infected person is taking Valtrex. If in addition to Valtrex you are careful to not have sex when you are having symptoms of an outbreak, the odds are strong you could have regular sex for 10 years without transmission ever occurring. " H. Hunter Handsfield, M.D. my partner is not taking valtrex, she has no symptoms of an outbreak and your saying i can have regular sex, ie. unprotect sex.
Avatar n tn yes you can go on daily suppressive therapy with valtrex to help reduce transmission to your wife. Just avoiding sex when you have obvious genital symptoms and taking daily suppressive therapy makes it on average 95-96% likely each year that you won't transmit hsv2 to her. when she becomes pregnant, she should get a type specific herpes igg blood test done to see what her status is.
Avatar m tn once you start taking valtrex once daily to reduce the risk of transmission to a partner...when would you think that it "kicks in" or starts doing what it is suppose to do (reduce viral shedding)? I have done so much internet research and read a lot of places that with the use of a daily antiviral and condoms you reduce the risk of passing the virus to an uninfected partner to like 2-3% is that really correct or should i ask where does the 2-3% number come from?
