If 3 docs say its zoster then its pretty definitely zoster. The valtrex dose given by Londres is correct for the time when the outbreak is present. In my country Valtrex is not licensed for suppression of zoster. You are taking the dose that suppresses the majority (but not all )of simplex outbreaks. The dose to treat zoster is higher than the dose to treat simplex, so I am guessing that the dose to suppress zoster may be higher than the dose to suppress simplex.
I went to an Urgent Care Clinic and he diagnosed it as Herpes Zoster and prescribed Valtrex 1g 3 times a day. Over the next few days the rash spread down to my mid thigh and on to the top of my penis shaft. The rash has remained only on the left side of my body. Since the rash spread onto my penis I have become very worried about it being actual Genital Herpes.

1. first time outbreaks 1000 mg twice a day for ten days.
2. recurrent outbreaks is 2 grams, twice in one day, 12 hours apart or 500 mg twice a day for 3 days.
3. suppression is 1000 mg once a day for people wheo have 10 or more outbreaks per year. 500 mg once a day for people who have 9 or fewer per year. Doses are taken every day.
we treat herpes simplex and herpes zoster with the same medications. it's just a matter of dose.
My question is, I had a bout of herpes zoster back in April of 2007. Was put on Valtrex and was recovered due to being diagnosed within the 72 hour period. Would I be a good candidate for the new herpes zoster vaccine? My primary care doctor suggested that I not get the vaccine but I am a little leary about a recurring bout. The swab came back positive for shingles or chicken pox (vzv) the dr informed me usually that suggest herpes as the labs often confuse the two. He put me on valtrex 500mg x 2 a day. I took them for two days then got a
Blood test. Both my partner and I tested negative for HSV1 & HSV2. And we have not been in contact with anyone else for over a year. So if I was HSV Positive I would have to have been carrying it for over a year.
If not severe i do the topical Acyclovir, if severe i get on the Valtrex immediately. The last 4 yrs it has recurred every month or so. It is now eating into my sacral nerves and i have neuralgia. Right now i have lesions and the pain shoots across both sides of the buttocks. It is creating sciatica down my legs. I also have a cutting sensation in the vagina at times and a feeling of something moving in the last 7 inches of my lower spine.
He perscribed Valtrex and Clomitrizole Topical Ointment. He also drew blood for an IGM test to see there is an active infection however he did not swab the blisters/bumps. Doctor C) A dermatologist I called that had a cancellation, this was today. He looked at it, doesn't think it's Shingles and told me to STOP taking the topical ointment but keep taking the Valtrex.
I filled the prescriptions but had made an apt with an ophthalmologist later that day....he told me I had zoster. So he prescribed Valtrex and told me to try the tramadol and if it didn't work he would prescribe another drug. Ok. A lot of other stuff happened (I had a severe ADR from taking the meds too close together on an empty stomach and drinking coffee which made me extremely ill all day Friday from 11 am till 1:30 am the next day).

Is it possible to transmit it sexually when the herpes zoster virus is active if the location is genitally or can you still transmit it genitally if it's not located genitally, like thighs, for example? If so, is that how I got it?

I have had two outbreaks of Shingles, herpes zoster. My first was when I was in my early 20s and was on my stomach and back on my right side. The second case was last year, age 42, and was on my shoulder, neck, and face right side. This was very uncomfortable and lasted for about 6 months.
I did some research and found out about the immunization, zostavax, for shingles.
My question -
1) The handbook said zostavax is for people over age 60.
The outbreak was really bad though - I had a fever, swollen glands, and I had several blisters and ended up going to urgent care to get Valtrex. However, this most recent outbreak, I only had one cold sore, but as soon as it popped up, I ended up getting a Valtrex prescription and took it for a week, and have not had another outbreak since.
Since I had this cold sore, I've been getting weird burning/tingling senstations around my mouth...mainly where I had the cold sore.
i have been taking Concerta the past two months, a month ago i contracted herpes zoster. I am worried that the medication could have been the cause I started on 18 mg and then moved up to 36 which is around the time i got the herpes. should i be worried?.

What's the difference, why would someone take acyclovir twice a day when they could just take it once? Is there an advantage to taking it twice a day?
My second question is that when I am having an outbreak should I increase the dosage?

He also complains about left sided facial skin "tingling" without any other obvious facial changes. It has not progressed in 5 days of symptoms? Any thoughts?
Your doctors don’t seem to like testing, do they. Genital herpes due to HSV can sometimes be mistaken for Herpes zoster (shingles) which is a reactivation of the chicken pox virus. Thus without a culture to help sort things out however, I cannot give you a answer with a high degree of certainty.

At the age of 73 I was diagnosed with Herpes Zoster (shingles) on abdomen. Lasted for about a month. Was given a prescription of Valtrex. I was diagnosed within the 73 hour limit, therefore, the blisters did not last too long. Now, I am wondering if it is ok to get the new vaccine for shingles even though I had an outbreak shingles. Would I be a good candidate for the vaccine??? What are my chances of contacting shingles again with or without the new vaccine.
I am a 25 year old female. I have been having an outbreak on my forehead and scalp almost every year since I was about 12 of what was initially diagnosed as impetigo and later as shingles. Every time I have an outbreak I take valtrex and use zovirax cream and it clears right up. It isn't as painful as most people's so I considered myself lucky. My mother has recurring shingles as well. Also, I am a lesbian. I have NEVER had sex or oral sex with a male.
Concerned I went to urgent care because I was also feeling tingling around my lips and my toungue.The Dr I saw said it was herpes and gave me valtrex. I had never had a cold sore before and I thought they were a cluster of bumps but he said not always.Well by day 2 they were gone and never burst or crusted.Well on day three I got a cluster of Bumps all along the left side of my ribs with a really bad back pain.So this time I was able to see my primary Dr.He said it was shingles.
