I have been on valtrex for suppression of hsv 2 for 16yrs and continue to have outbreaks almost monthly. Sores in vaginal area are less noticeable but other symptoms such as fatigue, headache, swollen glands, back pain still persist. My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it.
My lips are constantly inflamed and feel burning hot. Recently the doctor at the clinic prescribed valtrex and protopic because he was not sure whether it was herpes related or excema. I have had excema intermittently since I was a child. The valtrex/protopic combo worked great but after a few days of being off it comes RIGHT back. I still have protopic left over so I have been applying it twice a day but when its not on it will come right back.
most folks who do, experience it initially when diagnosed and go on valtrex and are incredibly stressed. for most , it does come back. I do know of less than a handful of folks who experienced hair loss while on valtrex, they could find no other cause for it and even after stopping the valtrex the hair loss did not stop.
at this point continue to follow up on this with the dermatologist. they are your best bet.
acyclovir is 400mg 2x/day every single day. she will still get recurrences while on daily suppressive therapy regardless of if she's on acyclovir or valtrex, you just take acyclovir more often than you do valtrex.
My doc actually gave me Valtrex and antibioticsI did have the magic mouthwash also. I think the Valtrex helped the sore spots in my throat some, could have been the antibiotics. I also suffered from fever blisters. Couldnt eat a whole lot! Very painful! Good news is it does go away but unfortunately took me a couple months.
After I posted this I talked to the hospital doc about my negativ test result. She didnt think Valtrex had interferred with the results. I have had "herpes symptoms" four months, taking Valtrex last four weeks.
Maybe I could have a new test taken in a couple of weeks when my system is clear of Valtrex? Just to be on the safe side?
Just no it is all too confusing. One doc says: HERPES! The other says: no this is not herpes.
Thanks for the reply. Well if valtrex doesnt affect the results,wouldnt 55days be enough for conclusion? As doctors say 6weeks is quite enough for antihiv tests except cemotherapy patients?
Finally I broke down and in seeking relief on four ocassions and took 2000 mgs of Valtrex and awoke syptom free only to have the symptoms return the following evening. It seemed to help for a short period. Since I had nearly nine months straight without suppressive therapy would it be OK to take the WB now? It has been 26 months since the initial episode. In total I have had at least 11 months without suppressive therapy which includes the first nine months of possible infection.
If I stop it for a week do I wait to see if symptoms persist? If not begin again, or ask my doctor for an alternative? If so what should I be asking for and are they as effective as Valtrex?

I have been taking Valtrex regularly for 2 months and I have been taking 1 gram of Valtrex steadily for 2 weeks, and it is not going away. Valtrex has always worked quickly when I have had outbreaks in the past. The symptoms of this lesion (itchiness or soreness) come and go. What could be causing this? Could it be something other than herpes? Could the Valtrex be harmful to my baby? I go to the doctor again, soon, but want to be armed with all the inform. I can.
I recently was diagnosed with Herpes I've yet to go get a blood test done but I was put on Valtrex. I was so scared that I went and bout an Oraquick test I tested negative, two days later I still couldn't get it out of my mind and went and got two more tests while on Valtrex and all three said Negative. I know this question is asked over and over but, are my test conclusive even on Valtrex? My last exposure was 9 months ago if that wasn't clarified?
He informed me after the encounter that he has specifically Anal Herpes and takes Valtrex regularly to manage his condition.
After this I immediately rinsed myself off in rubbing alcohol on all potentially exposed areas including my mouth.
I have tremendous anxiety now about this. While a lot of what I read already says that my risk of transmission is low, it's not zero.
ve been taking 500mg of Valtrex every night and plan to do so for the next year to year and a half as suggested by my doctor. I have had no other outbreaks since the first one. My doctor explained to me that taking Valtrex on a regimen would help the virus become dormant. I was wondering what that meant specifically in terms of my likelihood of transmitting the virus to sexual partners with or without condoms.

I MAY have contracted HSV 1 genitally. I had previously had blood tests done which showed that I have HSV 1, but not HSV 2 (I've had cold sores). As of a week ago, I woke up with very red patches on the inside of my foreskin. Went to the doctor, he swabbed it and it came back as negative for HSV 1. I took one day's worth of Valtrex and by the next morning, it looked as though the red patch was nearly gone. I stopped taking the Valtrex as of then.
I'm getting the prescription filled. As I indicated above, my gf and I both have HSV1. I just don't know what the long term consequences are for me. This disease makes me feel so gross right now and don't know if other than feeling dirty, if herpes will affect me in other ways. I hear if you take valtrex and continue to drink alcohol, you'll cause irreparable liver and kidney damage.
