My new VA doctor wants to change one of my blood pressure medications from 160 mg of Valsartan 2 times per day to an equivalent dose of 100 mg of Losartan but only once per day. My blood pressure has been controlled for years with typical readings around 118/70 using the Valsartan, Amlodipine 5mg, and a diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide 25mg). I have not made the change yet.
1. Why should I agree to experiment with reducing my primary blood pressure medication and what are the risks?
I am so confused because I have too many issues that can cause the same symptoms. Recently, my doctor switched me from Valsartan HCTZ to Hydrochlorothiazide plus regular Valsartan for my blood pressure. When I first started it, right away I was having rapid heart beat and shortness of breath so he told me take potassium supplements. That did help but now I am wondering if I am taking too much potassium.
Instructions for Viagra, Cialis, etc. say not to take w/ BP meds. I'm thinking there are a cpl possibilities. Diovan (Valsartan) is available in different doses (20 mg, 40 mg, etc.), so maybe you could take a lower dose on the day you'll be using Viagra. Or possibly just skip your usual dose that day, then resume the next. However, your Dr. may not agree. I think the best strategy is to ask your Dr. about using these 2 drugs at the same time.
Have you used Valsartan for treatment of hypertension patients in high risk patients? Are you aware about the combination Valsartan and Amlodipine to treat hypertension in high risk patients? How its is better than Telmisarton and Amlodipine combination?
-( 3 days on valsartan and I was having horrible side effects of dizziness, rapid heart rate, general feeling of crappiness, even slight shortness of breath with the slightest exertion None of which I experienced with the benazepril. Called the dr, he told me to stop the valsartan, don't take anything for 2 days and then back on the benazepril and see him next week.
I don't have EDS, but my aortic root is at the high end of normal, and I might have some mild degree of connective tissue problem (not enough of anything for a diagnosis), but the enlarging of my aorta was completely stopped by taking max dose of valsartan (similar to cozaar (ARB)). Many other people I know w/ connective tissue problems like MFS have had the same results, or aortic shrinkage. I have not yet heard of anyone taking a proper dose of ARB and continuing aortic enlargement.
I've taken Valsartan since 2010 successfully. It controls my BP well.

t keep up with the research in many cases, and this is one such case. **High-dose** ARBs (e.g., telmisartan, valsartan) and ACE inhibitors (e.g., perindopril) have been shown to be extremely effective in halting aortic enlargement, as long as a sufficiently high dose is used (i.e., maximum FDA-approved dose). Do the research and demand that your doctor read it and re-evaluate his/her recommendation of beta blockers, or find a doctor who actually keeps up with the latest research.
I have some sort of connective tissue problem (not Marfan, but perhaps MASS syndrome), and I began using ARBs (valsartan) a few years ago, when this research first debuted. I graduated to a maximal dose (320mg/valsartan/day) about a year and a half ago. I don't know if this is wishful thinking or what, but my myopic progression and aortic dilatation both seem to have completely stopped (and aortic dilatation actually appears to be reversing to normal size).
I get that dry cough too.
I don't take an ACE inhibitor though, I don't think. Just Lopressor, Dyazide/Maxzide, Lipitor and aspirin for the heart issues.
For me it started a couple of years ago one summer after pushing myself too hard. I start coughing out of the blue to the point of either just about passing out or vomiting mucus. Urgg My chest hurts and feels sunken in, pounds very hard and quivers sort of and then I'm fine till it happens again.
It is thought that losartan is not as good a choice as other ARBs like valsartan and telmisartan because losartan penetrates tissue less than those drugs and because losartan is a surmountable antagonist that could, theoretically, lose effectiveness over time. This isn't a proven fact to my knowledge and Dr. Dietz for various reasons may or may not agree.
Apparently, I still need the Zoloft because I am starting to feel the suicide thoughts come back. I tried taking my regular dose (150 mg) a couple of days ago. (after being off zoloft for probably one month). I became extremely dizzy and nausea was there, too. I am wondering what dose I should start myself on again, and the increments I should increase my dose.
We're all different, so when you feel a dose that's too high can vary. It also varies depending on "how much" too high it is.
My initial dose was also too high, and it took about two weeks for me to feel the effects of that. Levo builds in your bloodstream over several weeks, so it's a matter of when your levels go too high (for you personally...they don't have to go out of range). Starting dose depends on weight, as dunks351 pointed out.
So many of my friends (without prior HCV history) are starting to have all kinds of health issues (diabetes, cardiac, high bp, etc.) after 60. Seems like we're starting to fall apart. I would not be surprised if it wasn't something that would have happened with age and no HCV tx; however, I don't think you've indicated your age. On the other hand, anything is possible with HCV and tx.
I starting zolft for anxiety and dr said to start with 12.5 mg for one week than increase to 25mg the second week, than 37.5 mg the third week than 50mg. My concern is side effects. Will I have side effect the first week on such a low dose. I'm so scared to take zolft but I want my life back.
