Common Questions and Answers about Trigeminal neuralgia what is it

trigeminal-neuralgia

Avatar f tn Facial nerve palsy is characterized by inability to close eye, loss of sensation on affected part, difficulty in speaking and mask like face on affected side because facial nerve innervates facial muscles and any damage to facial nerve may cause inability make facial expressions like smiling, frowning etc. Second possibility is Trigeminal neuralgia - neural pain of face with possible loss of sensation on the affected part of face but eye is seldom involved.
432376 tn?1266257738 For this, well need help of the other symptom, the face. To me, it looks likes the pain and hypersensitivity to touch as seen in Trigeminal Neuralgia. You have described the facial pain in exactly the manner in which Trigeminal Neuralgia strikes. I am concerned here. If this is trigeminal neuralgia, and you do not have any other indication that would tell that this is a herpes virus infection, the next option is MS. I feel this should be kept in mind and ruled out accordingly.
Avatar f tn Thus the pain that you are now experiencing is unlikely to be related to the trigeminal neuralgia, as you yourself suggest. Having said that, it is now widely believed that neurologic causes are responsible for a large proportion of headache and/or facial pain. One seldom suspected neurologic cause of facial pain and occipital headaches is, oddly enough, compression by adjacent muscle or other disease of a bundle of nerves called the brachial plexus, located adjacent to the upper chest.
Avatar f tn Hello unnerved, Trigeminal nerve which is responsible for sensations of the face. The cause trigeminal neuralgia is probably a blood vessel pressing on the trigeminal nerve. Tumors and multiple sclerosis can also cause it, but in some cases the cause is unknown. The pain is sudden, severe, electric shock-like, stabbing that is typically felt on one side of the jaw or cheek.
Avatar n tn i have been treated for tmj for 5 years with no relief and then i had an arthrocentesis done and still no relief. now my doc tells me i have trigeminal neuralgia and is going to give me an injection into that nerve. what i want to know is there side effects of this injection? and can trigeminal neuralgia cause pain in the back of the head where the skull meets the spine. i have had continuous pain there worse then ever. i am now on neurontin and baclofen and it helps extremely.
Avatar m tn Have you had any other tests other than an MRI? My doctor did all kinds of blood tests to rule out any other disease. TN is diagnosed from how the patient describes the symptoms and by the process of elimination. There is no "test" that confirms TN as far as I know. My advice would be that you find a "facial pain specialist" or a doctor that deals with "orofacial pain" if there is one practicing near you.
Avatar f tn According to what I've read Trigeminal Neuralgia can be caused by a blood vessel or vein pressing on the Trigeminal nerve, by MS, by tumors, or by damage to the Trigeminal nerve during a surgical procedure. I'm not really sure about a bump on the head. There are different types of "neuralgia" -- you may want to post your question on the Neurology community or do a search on this website -- if you are asking your question about "neuralgia" in general.
Avatar f tn Blood work that has been done is good except for elevated CRP and sed rate. Does it sound like trigeminal neuralgia could be it and would that potentially cause the unilateral weakness? Thank you.
Avatar m tn It is highly unlikely that drug or medication can provoke trigeminal neuralgia. What I really meant was some medications such as tegretol, anticonvulsants, for example, neuron tin are very promising to treat trigeminal neuralgia. In addition, surgical procedure known as microvascular decompression is promising and yields long term therapeutic effect. you do need to see a neurologist to be fully informed of all available treatment options.
Avatar f tn Did you ever get a reply? Sounds like Trigeminal Neuralgia Type 1 or Atypical. There is help for this! Same needs used for seizures help condition and pain attacks. Tegretol is one but many more. Thank you Neurologist treats TN. Studies happening now.
Avatar n tn Corneal reflex is closing of the eyelids when the cornea is touched or a puff of air is blown on to it, mediated by the fifth cranial or trigeminal nerve and is ususlly absent in trigeminal neuralgia. Usually trigeminal neuropathy is not related to connective tissue disorder. Refer http://www.emedicinehealth.com/trigeminal_neuralgia_facial_nerve_pain/article_em.
378497 tn?1232143585 I've had electric shocks cross my face essentially from my ear across my cheekbone for several weeks now. They are not terrible pain by any means, just quick zaps. Sometimes, they go over my eyebrow, too. Sometimes, making a certain face seems to set one off, or if I touch my face right at the cheekbone. I'm seeing a neurologist because of other things, symptoms that had people thinking MS but now they're just confused, so we're in a waiting game.
Avatar f tn Hi, About a year ago, I suddenly developed shooting pains in the front of my face, above my upper front teeth. I went to the dentist, who x-rayed me, and said I had an abscess, above my left upper 1 tooth. He did root canal treatment, but could not find anything, the pain did not go away, and after several root canals, he referred me to a consultant for an apicectomy. When the operation was done, as he drilled through the bone, he said there was lots of pus to drain away.
2047903 tn?1330187549 Hi, Now that you have tested negative for these MS mimics, do you think your neuro may turn his head back towards MS and reconsider? Although, it may be rare for some people to present with trigeminal neuralgia, I'd have to say that everyone is different. He may not to rule out out just, yet. I hope the TN will go away soon.
Avatar f tn which you need to evaluate and avoid. Drug of choice for trigeminal neuralgia is carbamazepine but as the dose may vary according to severity therefore I would advice an oral medicine specialist consultation or at least a physician to confirm this diagnosis and get you treated accordingly. Take care.
Avatar f tn I have these symptoms and a diagnosis of RRMS. Bilateral trigeminal neuralgia is almost exclusive to MS. I have it as well to match my brainstem lesions. As noted on one of my recent posts, dysautonomia can occur in MS with brainstem lesions so it may be tough to parse out the different symptoms to different diagnoses. The bilateral trigeminal neuralgia points to MS. The rest of the symptoms I can't be so definite about. But I have done much research on the trigeminal neuralgia.
635835 tn?1272539383 I would go even further and say that TN can be painless, although in that case I wouldn't necessarily call it trigeminal NEURALGIA, because neuralgia means "nerve PAIN." But still, it's an indication that something is whacked out with the trigeminal nerve. Namely, I get PAINLESS shocks in the exact distribution of the trigeminal nerve in my face--in a semicircle around the eye and running into the side of my nose and into my upper lip.
Avatar f tn I have been diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia, It started with tumors in my sinus', is it normal to loosen teeth? Also I have been advised to have these tumors removed, what does this entail? I also have Pilocytic Astrocytomas growing towards my brain stem , in the cerebellum and a Venous Angioma, also in the Cerebellum. I also have Tympanosclerosis and am allergic to Morphine. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you, Sharon.
Avatar m tn It is like a needle made of glass penetrating the right side of my nose and going into my head. What is the best treatment for this and can it be cured completely. This discussion is related to Trigeminal neuralgia more help.
Avatar n tn Hi, I am sorry to say i don't know! Try googling it like this : Migraine+Trigeminal Neuralgia. I just saw your post and want to share something that helps me when I have bad headaches. Join the face book group "Headache Helper". There's a new product there that makes a big difference to me... maybe it will help you.
Avatar n tn This pain occurs when a blood vessel compresses the trigeminal nerve as it leaves the brain stem. Temporal arteritis is caused due to inflammation of medium and large sized arteries bringing blood to the head. Tension headaches usually cause low to medium intensity headaches and there may be a band like feeling on the head. There is also pain in neck muscles and pain on sides of head. Rare but serious cause of any headache are arteriovenous malformations, brain tumors .
