Trigeminal neuralgia surgical treatment

Common Questions and Answers about Trigeminal neuralgia surgical treatment

trigeminal-neuralgia

Avatar m tn What I really meant was some medications such as tegretol, anticonvulsants, for example, neuron tin are very promising to treat trigeminal neuralgia. In addition, surgical procedure known as microvascular decompression is promising and yields long term therapeutic effect. you do need to see a neurologist to be fully informed of all available treatment options.
Avatar f tn i have a reaserch on mangment of trigeminal neuralgia , but i cann't know until now which the best medical or surgical treatment and i couldn't found which have high rate of recurrance.
2015036 tn?1332997788 However, not all patients with MS-TN achieve pain relief with medications alone, and surgical treatment is often necessary. For patients with MS-TN, the optimal surgical management is not well defined. Microvascular decompression is generally not recommended because MS-TN pain is thought to result from an inflammatory process causing demyelination along the proximal nerve and within the pons rather than vascular compression.
Avatar n tn These symptoms are pointing towards trigeminal neuralgia, which is a nerve disorder causing a stabbing or electric shock like pain in parts of face. This can affect part of or all of face and surface of eye. Trigeminal neuralgia may be caused by multiple sclerosis and pressure on the trigeminal nerve from a swollen blood vessel or tumor.
Avatar n tn I may have trigeminal neuralgia in the mandibular branch. Severe pain in the lower gum area but it is on both sides which has my PC doctor, my neurolgist, my pain management dr, my neurosurgeon and my accupuncturist all baffled. Meanwhile, I am on Lyrica, which is becoming ineffective, Vicodin, which does not help much, and Ambien to knock me out at night to get some sleep. Is anyone out there who has experienced such a problem that can head me in the right direction? I am losing hope.
Avatar n tn I have a recent dx of Trigeminal Neuralgia from Primary Care and have been referred to Neurology for further evaluation. The pain distribution is unilateral and follows the sensory distribution of cranial nerve V at the maxillary area. History of previous trauma (neuroplasia) dates to 1997, though asymptomatic to current presentation. There is no prior history of TMJ, aneurysms, tumors or other common precipitants. I am 61 years old, consistent with typical onset.
Avatar f tn I have been living with trigeminal neuralgia since 2004 when it was first diagnosed. I am taking carbamazepine, occasional lamotrigine and have recently been advised by my neurologist to add pregabalin, 2 daily. At present, my TN has shifted from the usual position from the left side of my face and down the left side of my nose to a new and very painful path from the scalp (front forehead) and down the left side of my nose. I cannot bear to touch my scalp without bringing on a spasm.
Avatar f tn According to what I've read Trigeminal Neuralgia can be caused by a blood vessel or vein pressing on the Trigeminal nerve, by MS, by tumors, or by damage to the Trigeminal nerve during a surgical procedure. I'm not really sure about a bump on the head. There are different types of "neuralgia" -- you may want to post your question on the Neurology community or do a search on this website -- if you are asking your question about "neuralgia" in general.
Avatar m tn I have had TN (Trigeminal Neuralgia) now for about 17 years. Sharp stabbing pain at times right side of face, usually centered around upper right teeth/top of lip/bottom of nose area. Have had two Gamma Knife procedures done 10/05 and then 10/08 after pain had returned early '08. Pain has returned this spring and continues. Recent MRI shows no changes from before.
Avatar f tn Your symptoms do not exactly match the clinical picture of trigeminal neuralgia but you should continue with the treatment and do notgo in for complicated details. The treatment consists of medicines, surgery, and complementary approaches. Avatar f tn Do you think this can still be Trigeminal Neuralgia? Is a neurologist the best type of Doctor to seek treatment from? Thank you again.
1385138 tn?1279928966 The pain seems to travel along the trigeminal nerve yet trigeminal neuralgia is ruled out. It also seems to travel along the temporal artery and that side hit the windshield. The airbag did misalign my jaw with a great impact. Having so many sites in pain with the swelling and even generates to clavicl and end of deltoid muscle down my right arm when off epitol. I am so tired of being told I am unusual and symptoms bizarre.
Avatar n tn Trigeminal neuralgia - it's a painful inflammation of the trigeminal nerve. It typically affects older adults, and there isn't a known cause.... It's strange - it can cause really sharp shooting pains that lasts only a few seconds, and can be triggered by the oddest things. Some people only need to be lightly touched on the areas of the face it ennervates, while other people only have issues with extreme heat fluctuations.
Avatar n tn t want to operate on me through MVD because my pain is bilateral and my pain syndrome is not that of trigeminal neuralgia. My pain specialist suggested a sphenopalatine ganglion block (a surgical invasive procedure) but my mum wouldn't hear of it. I feel a little less pressure when I tilt my head backwards, and can feel the nerves in my nose vibrating more intensely when I massage the back of my head. I have suffered a lot alot through the 1.5 yr, but the pain remained the same.
Avatar n tn s symptoms one treatment option is surgical. The trigeminal nerve system includes a body of nerve cells called the gasserian ganglion, and in patients with severe, refractory TN the gasserian ganglion can be ablated (literally meaning burned, intentionally damaged) to prevent transmission of impulses down the nerve. This is often successful but as with every surgical procedure there are risks and side effects, including the occurrence of facial numbness.
Avatar n tn With regard to surgical therapy, there are several options available for TN. The surgical treatment of facial pain syndomes, including TN, would be performed by a neurosurgeon experienced with these techniques. Each of the surgical techniques employed has some degree of success (not 100%) and attempts to reduce pain signals generated by the trigeminal nerve, which transmits painful sensation from the face (hence the term trigeminal neuralgia).
Avatar m tn Does Trigeminal Neuralgia worsen with age. I've tried Tegretol but the pain has some back agaiin after about a year and is very, very intense. It is like a needle made of glass penetrating the right side of my nose and going into my head. What is the best treatment for this and can it be cured completely. Avatar f tn Hello, In your case, I think that it can be trigeminal neuralgia. Trigeminal neuralgia is very painful swelling (inflammation) of the nerve (trigeminal nerve) that delivers feeling to the face and "surface" of the eye. Trigeminal neuralgia causes severe, short-lasting (only a few seconds) facial pain on the side of the affected nerve even by slight touch. Mostly affects elderly females. May be caused in multiple sclerosis also.
Avatar n tn my son developed trigeminal neuralgia after a dental procedure. he is presently on medication for it. he is 28 years old and what is research showing for future care.
