Avatar n tn A list of medications that have been shown, in clinical studies, to have an interaction with grapefruit juice can be found in the table below. All of the medications, except for theophylline and itraconazole, are known to be substrates of CYP3A. When given with grapefruit juice in pharmacokinetic studies their availability increases. In most cases, the clinical consequence of the pharmacokinetic interaction has not been evaluated.
Avatar f tn thanks Research about the interaction of grapefruit juice with drugs suggests that compounds in grapefruit juice, called furanocoumarins (for example, bergamottin), may be responsible for the effects of grapefruit juice. Researchers believe that furanocoumarins block the enzymes in the intestines that normally break down many drugs. One glass of grapefruit juice could elicit the maximum blocking effect, and the effect may persist for longer than 24 hours.
Avatar m tn I like to drink grapefruit juice but hear that it can interfere with some prescription medications. Is that true? Answers from Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D. Yes. Grapefruit and certain other citrus fruits and products can interfere with several kinds of prescription medications. Don't take these interactions lightly. Some can cause potentially dangerous health problems.
Avatar n tn Has anyone had problems with Zoloft side effects as a result of eating grapefruits? I started taking zoloft (100 mg daily) just two months ago and have not gotten over what I thought were the initial symptoms--dizziness, drowsiness, itchy skin. I was so tired all day long that I found I had to drink up to 7 cups of coffee a day to stay awake. While reading an old magazine, one title jumped out at me, "Grapefruit Concern".
142526 tn?1397090672 While you are taking this medicine, you should avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice. You may choose an alternative citrus beverage (such as orange juice). In the event that you are instructed by a healthcare professional (e.g., doctor, pharmacist, or dietitian) to eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice you should discuss with your doctor the effects of grapefruit on the blood levels of this medicine.
Avatar m tn This, initially the drug does not completely metabolize and has an extended half-life. This why it is dangerous to take grapefruit juice with certain medications. Follow me on this. You take a substance that reduces the production of these enzymes (say grapefruit juice) and for the first four hours the drug does not fully metabolize. After six hours the grapefruit juice wears off, the liver again starts producing these enzymes, and you take a second dose of the medication.
Avatar m tn No interaction between both drugs. Note that some aliments like citrus, grapefruit extract can increase the potency of some drugs which is considered an interaction.

Avatar m tn The interaction caused by grapefruit compounds lasts for up to 24 hours and its effect is the greatest when the juice is ingested with the drug or up to 4 hours before the drug. [10] It is demonstrated for the first time that lemon juice significantly inhibits by 60 ± 3% the CYP3A4-mediated oxidation http://cat.inist.fr/?

1175033 tn?1492201228 I started taking Valium recently and noticed that the bottle warned not to consume grapefruit of the juice at all while taking this medication. This was a issue for me because I drink hansen's natural cane sugar soda with real grapefruit extract and I had to give that up, but I really didn't want to so I read up on what it will do. One article I came across said it would increase the potency of certain meds by 400% http://www.mayoclinic.

Many oral drugs undergo first-pass (presystemic) metabolism by the enzyme.
Avatar m tn Thanks, Rocker, for posting all that. I was curious about the grapefruit-drug interaction, but had not done the research. I was told to avoid grapefruit during tx. Is that a standard of tx, to avoid grapefruit, I mean, is everyone told that by their caregivers? Just curious.
976606 tn?1263667593 I'm not sure what the official medical answer is regarding grapefruit juice and Synthroid, but I have never noticed a difference when I drink pink grapefruit juice vs. any other juice. I know grapefruit juice is a no-no with certain meds (my Mom can't drink it because of one of her post-heart attack medications), but I have never seen any warnings regarding synthroid.
237039 tn?1264258057 I had always said no to statins in the past because I had infectious hepatitis (not any type C, caught it from my younger brother) as a child and feared I had liver damage from that. But when the doctor called after that test I decided I would try Tricor. (fenofibrate I think is what it is) I took it for a month, then stopped, then again a month later took it for a month. Then stopped again. My brother jumped all over me this year and is forcing me to take it.
252327 tn?1250183976 Hey everyone, are any of you on synthroid and on Tricor? If you have been reading my posts you will have seen that I have been having problems with shortness of breath and palputations, Thinking it was my synthroid I started adjusting my dose. Then I did have a slight problem with peanut allergies. After not eating peanuts, the breathing problems and palputations continued. Last night I looked up the side effects of tricor ( I started them mid December) by Christmas the problems started.
1322157 tn?1279656681 So, I just poured myself a glass of grapefruit juice and took my medicine - then for some reason I remembered that grapefruit juice interacts with some medications. I just did a quick search online and here is a list (probably not complete) of some medications that interact badly with grapefruit juice. Including some opiates.... Please be careful! a small part of the piece I read: "Amy Karch, R.N., M.S.
Avatar f tn One thought, did you take anything that may have had a poor interaction with your simvistatin? Grapefruit for example is something that needs to be avoided while taking statins. Grapefruit contains the compound bergamottin, which interacts with certain enzyme systems in the body, such as cytochrome P-450 and P-glycoprotein. These enzyme systems are responsible for breaking down statins, as well as other drugs, into more usable chemicals and transporting them in the body.
822804 tn?1298226302 Have they suggested taking a statin? My trigs are actually over 2100. I take Tricor to keep these down.
1225178 tn?1318980604 I was told not to drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit. Congratulations on nearing the end. I understand how the brain is totally gone. My brain is fried too just as I move into my final week.
