I am on 50mg topiramate 2x a day and 250 mg Divalproex in the morning and 500 at night. Both drugs are known to cause hair loss. As well topirimate can cause one who is on birth control pills to get pregnant & or cause break through bleeding!! I'm 48!! I don't need a pregnancy, plus if you get pregnant the baby could have a cleft palate! Why don't these bastards tell us that before? He put me on lamotrigine before and I broke out in a rash all over my body and had palipatations.

He and my neurologist advised i try Topiramate as Amitriptyline didn't suit me (made me suicidal) and my asthma prevents them trying me on beta blockers.

Hi, The reason you were prescribed the medications was mood swings and migraines. Do not take the side effect of topiramate that is weight loss to be the aim in using the medication. Are your symptoms of migraine and mood swings better after taking the medications? Carry on regular exercises to help you lose weight and plan your diet schedule accordingly. Consult your neurologist before you stop taking any medication or even change its dose. Let us know if you have any doubts.

How does Rolaids or tums help with the tingling sensations caused by taking topiramate?

Hi. My son is 15 yo and has recently been prescribed Topiramate 50mg Daily preventive use for Classic Migraine HA and "added bonus to decrease mood swings." Amongst many other concerns I have, I am concerned with remarks of weight loss. He is already very thin with a very good appetite. How much weight loss can I expect and does anyone have experience with the mood swings issue?

I am currently on Keppra and Topiramate and have just been told my latest tests are showing major kidney damage from the topiramate. I have been on these two meds since 2002. I have to admit, reading all this is very scary. NO Other Meds have worked to control my seizures ! PERIOD!! Plus I have severe Migraines and Short term memory is almost gone in a matter of seconds. You can call the pharmacist who filled your prescription. Often they are better able to answer these types of questions than your doctor because they have access to all the databases available that contain information about drug interactions and so on. They are also much easier to get a hold of than most doctors.

My Doctor Put me on Phentermine 30mg and Topiramate 50 mg and now wants to give me sample Synthroid tablets 150mg to jump start weight loss. I am concerned. Is this alright to do?

I would be running those tests because I would want to know if that’s why people’s hair was falling out. Hair loss in not a symptom of Topamax, but it is of Hypothyroidism. See what I mean?

Hi...this is not really all that new, and it is the generic of TOPAMAX...this can take 2 weeks to adjust to....so u may feel extremely tired and off balance with this.... I did lose weight, and not sure how it works, but I gained it all back and I am still on the med....so it is not a weight loss miracle. I have noticed a change in taste as well as smells...so I know that did affect what I eat.... Good luck and again be advised most do need an adjustment period to this med.

I was diagnosed in 2002 with seizures but all the professionals that have seen me still cannot tell me what kinds, I have tons of MRI's, eegs, ekgs, Cardio grams, and more and still they have all come back normal. To this day I am on topiramate twice a day to control whatever spells happen. Just last year I was driving at 3:20am in the morning and I had tunnel vision because I was having an attack, it started off with the sharp pains in my head, tremors, and so on.

However, a couple of years ago I was on a variety of medications including Zoloft, Xanax, Trazadone and Clonapin and noticed the hair loss. I went from having thick hair to very thin and brittle. Has anyone tried extended release Topamax or Topiramate? It is called Trokedi XR. I am going to try it because my memory is so bad on Topamax. My neurologist said it might be better with Trokedi XR but it is very expensive. So if you can tell me before I buy it I would appreciate any feedback.

I am a 40 yr old female with a history of migraines. I've always used Topamax as a maintenance rx & Imitrex injections as a rescue rx. My migraines have been under control for over a yr. In the last 3 months, my headaches have returned. I have also noticed that memory (short & long term) & my cognitive skills have been affected. I.E. I can't remember parts of conversations that I only had 5 minutes ago.

I was blind for two days and suffered, forgetfulness, confusion, tiredness, hair loss, slurred speech just to name a few of the side effects. The frustrating part was that my Dr., the ER DR. and my eye Dr. were all stumped. I take 150 mg of topiramate for cronic cluster headaches every night. Sometimes this causes me to have wake up with pain/tingling in my feet as a side effect. I find relief from this pain by using a "hidow" electronic massager that uses electricity on the bottoms of my feet. I was going to a neurologist that specialized in migraines and she gave me Topiramate which totally took away the vertigo and double vision. I get a very slight bit but not the kind that knocks you over now and only a few seconds. I was also told to go to an ENT to rule out Meniers disease and they checked my hearing and looked in my ear and did a CT to rule out a tumor behind the ear called acoustic neuroma. They were all negative. If positive for the Meniers they give you water pills.

With acetazolamide not working, and topiramate worsening my state. After being on topiramate for 3 days, I had a general feeling of confusion, disorientation, trouble with my memory, and trouble concentrating.

Recently she has experienced numbness / heaviness in both legs (unable to move), the loss of the ability to talk and a hot flushing feeling moving over her scalp and neck and down her back for about 15 minutes She has had a basic MRI, Evoked Response Test, thorough eye examination and a lumbar puncture.
