well, she would not be able to function at all without the topamax. The topamax gave her her life back. She still has pain and still needs to use strong pain medications for break-through pain but... without the topamax she would be completely disabled and would not be able to walk or use her hands at all. On the topamax she lives a very normal life! So, I think it is a very useful medication for chronic pain.

Does anyone else here take Topamax for the intense spasms and jerking? If so PLZ reply and let me know if it helps?...how it affects U? If u have any better med suggestions for the intense jerking? I really need all the suggestions possible b4 I go back to the doc. Appreciate ur time....

I tried drinking a beer at a wedding over this past weekend and the same this occured, at first taste it tastes flat, then after a few seconds my taste buds kick in and it feels a bit like pins and needles on my tongue and then I finally taste the flavor of the beer (same with soda), My palatte is perfect with anything else as far as beverages and food goes. And the last thing, and I think one of the weirdest for me, was soda. The topamax can do something to the way you taste soda. The way my sister describes it is it tastes flat and then suddenly starts burning. I don't know. I think the thing that I need to emphasize in all of this is that the even though the side effects are a little strange, the pills seem to be working. When I was only taking 25mg a day, I had 4 migraines in a month.

I was recently put on topamax not 4 weight loss but i was told a side effect is weight loss(personally i am against taking diet pills for myself) i was wondering if anyone has any knowledge or xperience with this med?

I used to be on Topamax for a combination of problems. It made soft drinks etc. taste like metal and flat. My stomach was always upset - that was how I lost weight, not a good way to do it. I had "stupid" issues, it is nicknamed Dopamax by a lot of people. My hair started falling out so much that my hair dresser asked me if I was on chemo. With all of the side effects, I just told my doctors to forget it, to find something else.

Has anyone had success with Topamax for neuropathic pain? Thanks in advance...

this is not really all that new, and it is the generic of TOPAMAX...this can take 2 weeks to adjust to....so u may feel extremely tired and off balance with this.... I did lose weight, and not sure how it works, but I gained it all back and I am still on the med....so it is not a weight loss miracle. I have noticed a change in taste as well as smells...so I know that did affect what I eat.... Good luck and again be advised most do need an adjustment period to this med.

Hello! I'm currently on Lamictal but considering changing to Topamax since this drug (topamax) more effectively treats partial seizures and migraines. What is your experience with it?

I did experience a little joint pain in the elbows and wrists when I jumped to a higher dose. The pins and needle sensations came stronger and more often as well. In my feet it felt like bee stings, ouch. I did some digging online and found in the clinical trails potassium helped with the tingling so I tried that. I started out by just trying to add potassium rich foods to my diet and saw a difference on those days.

I'm on 100mg of Topamax twice a day. And I am wondering what kind of long term effects this medications can have on someone? I'm only 19, and I take it for daily migraines. I know Benzodiazepine has a bad stomach side effect, and with Topamax, I was wondering if that would happen with taking this high of a dose.

does topamax cause weight gain, i am in 100mg a day for headaches and have gained about 50 pounds is it the topamax ?

In some people it changes their sense of taste so that things such as soda and fried foods no longer taste good to them, and they lose weight because they start eating better....for me this has not been the case; everything tastes the same! I have lost about 20+ pounds since I started taking it in July. I have noticed that some of that was muscle, as I have been a runner for the past 11 years, and my legs look kind of odd to me now because they definitely look thinner!

The pain clinic prescribed Topamax to help with my lower back pain, but I can't handle the side effects. I only took half the dose and I feel like I'm in a fog. I feel hungover and have NO energy. All I want to do is sleep, but I have a 3 year old tyrant to take care of, so Topamax won't work for me. Just had to throw that out there.

I have MS and I am on Topamax. As soon as I started Topamax, (before my diagnosis) I constantly had tingling hands and feet. It is an annoying side effect of the medication, but my migraines are so bad that I figure I'll take tingling hands and feet over debilitating head pain. The medication also effects the taste of things for me, especially carbonated drinks. I am addicted to Coca-Cola and it made it taste sort of like metal. It's pretty awful. I also get EXTREMELY thirsty on it.

I started taking Topamax my junior year of high school, then I found out I had 4 kidney stones. The doctors think that it might have been because of the topamax, but I wasn't drinking enough water with it, so I think that could have been the problem. I want to try again and make sure I drink plenty of water..trust me, this time I will..lesson learned. First I have to collect my urine for 24 hours and send it away to be tested to see if my kidneys are functioning well.

Carbonated drinks will taste awful - like really bad, some foods may taste different, you may get this weird double vision thing that seems like an image kinda floats in your eyes after you turn away from it (this only happens to me in the mornings when I just wake up), or a tingling sensation in your hands or feet (I had this if I took a 50 mg pill, but if I take 2 25mg pills, I don't). It has helped SO much though. Talk to your doctor.

I have suffered from migraines since my late 20's. I am now 49. I have tried any and every migrained med, some work, some don't. My doctor has just suggested topamax. Has anyone taken this? Does it work? I am also hypothyroid and take 200mcg of synthroid, will there be issues taking these two meds together? I read that one of the side effects of topamax is weight loss. This I wouldnt mind as Ive put on weight due to my hypothyroid. But, the biggest thing would not have these headaches.

I am on 100 mg of topamax a day ( 50mg 2x daily) and got a sinus infection on day 7 of starting topamax, been battling it for over a week now with antibiotics and it doesnt seem to be going away. Doctor said that I might have to decrease my topamax and I really dont want to as it seems to be working, if anything I was hoping to increase my topamax dose... My 21 yr old daughter was diagnosed with Hemiplegic migraines 2 yrs ago. They are non-genetic. She initially presented with complete paralysis on right side, including difficulty swallowing. If your daughter starts topamax, be sure to find a urologist. One of the major side effects of topamax is kidney stones. After taking it for my migraines for two years, I had kidney's full of stones. I have had three operations to rid myself of them and the surgery/recovery is very painful. The neurologist found out that I was in the hospital for a week ( the first time) and no kidding..yelled into the phone.. OH MY GOSH...ITS THE TOPAMAX!

I could not taste anything , nothing tasted right and I though ok this is because of stopping smoking, also stopped drinking pepsi, then I noticed chocolate tasted off, then I could not have my morning coffee, it smells and tastes burnt, It has been almost 4 months and I still can't drink coffee and everything still tastes off, so I figured it was my pain pills, so I started weaning off them, now it is day 6 of no pills ,all I take is a sleeping pill. Anyone else having these problems?
