Topamax for tics

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax for tics

topamax

Avatar m tn I am 50 years old male and have tics for the past 7 years. My neurologist runs an EMG, but it proved that my muscles are strong and there is no observation of any muscle disorder. He didn't impress upon me that what is the cause of my tics, execpt that he diagnosed that it is mainly due to stress. I still have the tics occassionally, althought it disappeared temporarily when I go abroad for vacation or even just attending business fair. Is my tics considered a tourette syndrome?
Avatar f tn As I said, after many medications and many awful side effects this one doctor tried him on a drug that is used primarily for seizures but was experimented on kids with tics. It worked beautifully!!!!!!! The name of the medicine is Topamax and it has been a life saver. Matthew has been pretty much tic free for eight years. He still takes the medicine but is in his second year of college now and is doing great.
Avatar f tn Hi, I am 48 years old and have had a twitch in my lower left eyelid for about 3 months. This can be 24 hours a day for many days at a time and then it becomes intermittent. In the last few days, my upper right eyelid has started fluttering intermittently as well. I have been on Topamax (100mg) per day for migraines since 2009, so I doubt whether this has suddenly become the cause. I am not stressed, but I do drink 2-3 cups of coffee per day. Can eyelid twitching go on this long?
Avatar f tn Um i would say that the book Quit It Is good for maybe that kind of situation.
Avatar f tn It could be those that had a hair loss issue also had a thyroid issue and assumed it was the topamax......????
Avatar n tn I used cloudiness to help with my tics seems to work well .
Avatar n tn Just wanted to share some things that worked for my son. Most tics are transient, but there are some things you can do to help remedy them. First, I would order a Comprehensive Diagnositic Stool Analysis. Check for dysbiotic (bad) bacteria or yeast overgrowth. Also check Secretory IgA levels and inflammatory markers. Generally, when there are tics, Sec IgA is low.
17218185 tn?1454677673 Please give me some advice about these 2 treatments for Tourettes. My 12 yr old son has Tourette's, was diagnosed when he was 5. At that time, he was having lots of verbal tics, strange behavior, slow language development, and obsessive scribbling on paper then waddling it up and throwing on floor (he started kindergarten, and I got impression he was stressed about learning to write), he did this for hours at a time!
Avatar f tn and i would highly recommend you consider the potential of your tics being mistaken for Tourettes and the potential of these tics being in someway related to your complex preexisting medical conditions and or medications, and it might be in your best interest to see a Tourettes specialist and be officially diagnosed, which will likely include re evaluation of your medical diagnostic history too. I hope that helps....
Avatar m tn I would ask for an alternative medicine. Topamax causes hair loss which I have experienced first hand. I found out that that is one of the main side effects and wish I hadn't taken it. I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication.
Avatar n tn It looks like the Risperdal could be the reason for the motor tics. Which would make more sense then the Concerta being the problem. And Risperdal could be the reason for the weight gain too. Here is a link to the info I was looking at on Risperdal - http://www.crazymeds.us/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Meds/Risperdal By the way, don't suddenly stop the Risperdal. You must sloooowly come off of it. Good luck!
Avatar f tn I had periorbital migraines and was placed on Topamax, technically an anti-seizure but also great for migraine/headache control and mood stabilization in bipolar disorder. That for a while was the only thing that worked for me. It can have a sedative and appetite suppressant effect. I was also shortly on a low dose of Elavil for migraines. Carefull with that one, take only the amount prescribed.
969557 tn?1314370614 The question of whether or not Concerta and other ADHD medications causes tics is a complex one. ADHD and tic disorder often occur together, so when tics occur in someone on a medication for ADHD, there is no clear way to know if the tics occurred because of the medication or if they would have occurred anyway, in due time. When the tics resolve after discontinuation of the medication, then a medication-induced tic disorder becomes clearer to diagnose.
Avatar n tn Thanks for using the forum. I am happy to address your questions, and my answer will be based on the information you provided here. Please make sure you recognize that this forum is for educational purposes only, and it does not substitute for a formal office visit with your doctor. It sounds like you have been suffering from tics. While I can not directly recommend a treatment without examining you and obtaining a history, I will try to provide you with some information.
Avatar m tn See if you can recognize a pattern for when the tics are bad, and when they are nonexistent. Many people also find that their tics disappear while they are focused on a particular task. Bringing attention to the tics typically makes them worse, although it may be necessary from time to time. Because your child has only exhibited vocal tics, and not motor tics, he is definitely not classified under Tourette's.
Avatar m tn Yesterday, I noticed that you suggested Strattera to another mom for tics. Our doctor told us also to change to Strattera.
Avatar f tn The only thing Geodon did for me when I withdrew from it was give me violent hallucinations which landed me in the hospital. I was extremely skinny anyway because I'm on Topamax for alcohol abstinence; my dosage was increased; lost a little more which came back when I was put on Seroquel. Anyway, depending on what you were on the Geodon for, ask your doctor about going on Topamax. Weight loss is a side effect.
1655289 tn?1326042889 Topamax does tend to cause weight loss, but trust me, this is not the way you want to lose weight. Topamax (I was taking it for bipolar) first of all did nothing for my moods. I was back in the hospital a few months after first being prescribed this, along with seroquel and ativan for panic and anxiety. That's not what makes this medicine so undesirable though. With each dose increase, I had numbness in my legs and arms. This could continue for as long as 2 weeks after a dose increase.
Avatar f tn ve been told that I should request for her to be evaluated by the school department for special needs. I still have no clue on how to write up a 504 plan and have little knowledge as to what would best accomodate my childs needs. I've already had a few run ins with my daughters school this year.
Avatar f tn Kids at school are beginning to notice and are asking her about it. I have been given a prescription for Clonidine. Has anyone tried Clonidine? Was the Clonidine successful? What side effects were seen?
Avatar n tn I also have three children, the oldest and youngest affected by tics, and the middle (son) not. My oldest was put on Ritalin for elementary school. He had tics, and they stopped when he was taken off Ritalin. My youngest son never was put on any medication, he has tics that come and go. My middle child (a son) has no tics, and no ADHD. Best wishes.
Avatar m tn An NSAID is good for inflammation, Anti-Seizure (like Lyrica, Neurontin or Topamax) medications are good for nerve pain. If Lyrica made your fiance too drowsy, Topamax might be a better alternative. This is what I take instead. It's in the same class, but has different side effects. Many people do not get as drowsy. Muscle relaxers can help too. Everyone's cocktail is different, because everyone's reacts differently to medications.
Avatar f tn My baby started showing facial tics. It is so frequent that it may happen every 1-2 minutes throughout the day except the sleep and feed on one side of her face. It's like she is eating a lemon. I don't know what the problem is. The ped suggested MRI, but I am so worried about anesthesia on such a little baby. Can anyone tell me the side effects of the anesthesia? will it be harmful to the brain? Some information tells me that the baby may outgrow the facial tic. Is it true?
Avatar f tn Most kids are diagnosed between 3rd and 4th grade, but they would have to have both vocal tics and motor tics for at least one year prior. My kids are now 14 yrs, 10 yrs, 7yrs, and 19 months old. All three older girls have been diagnosed. My third daughter was diagnosed at 3 1/2 yrs old, my oldest at 8 yrs old, and my middle daughter at 9 yrs old. My son has not been diagnosed yet. He doesn't seem to have motor tics yet, but it sounds like he has had a few vocal tics already.
