Topamax for obesity

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax for obesity

topamax

Avatar n tn The nerve can get compressed due to obesity, Diabetes Mellitus, hypothyroidism, arthritis and trauma. Would advise you to consult your primary care physician who may do a neurological assessment and may ask for Nerve conduction Studies to detect lesions in the nerves. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn It could be those that had a hair loss issue also had a thyroid issue and assumed it was the topamax......????
Avatar m tn I would ask for an alternative medicine. Topamax causes hair loss which I have experienced first hand. I found out that that is one of the main side effects and wish I hadn't taken it. I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication.
Avatar f tn I had periorbital migraines and was placed on Topamax, technically an anti-seizure but also great for migraine/headache control and mood stabilization in bipolar disorder. That for a while was the only thing that worked for me. It can have a sedative and appetite suppressant effect. I was also shortly on a low dose of Elavil for migraines. Carefull with that one, take only the amount prescribed.
Avatar n tn If the doc has her on a steroid based medication that could be another reason for the weight gain but long term becoming obese is never a good thing for anyone. My vote would be for either you or your mom to contact the doc who diagnosed the angina, tell them what is going on and get their advice on how much activity she will be able to do in having the angina and not setting it off.

Avatar m tn I started at 277 and now i am currently 245.6 lbs. I has worked wonders for me, hopefully it works for you as well. I started just walking 20 min a day, now i am up to 45 min a day and lifting weights as well. Good luck!!!!
Avatar n tn His weight is very above the 95th percentile and his height is between the 50-25th percentile for his age. He is very overweight for his age. It is recommend increasing children's physical activities (play, dance, sports) to lose weight, and not lower calorie intake due to the need of calories for growth. For his age he needs approximately 1800 calories a day to grow. Limit time in front of the TV or non-active-video games.
Avatar m tn I have started eating right and exercising for a minimum of 150 min a week. Kindly let me know if this should be enough to make changes to my health in terms of not being a victim to certain illness in the future.
Avatar n tn The portions served in American restaurants are sometimes can contain a day and half worth of calories of a healthy serving size for just one meal!!! Think about someone eating that way 3 times a day. No wonder obesity is an epidemic. Not to mention no one exercises.
Avatar f tn I am not a big believer in the PFO/stroke relationship (unless someone is very young and has no other reason to stroke-- in a male who is 53 years old it could be due to atherosclerosis from high blood pressure, obesity, smoking, etc).
Avatar n tn Hi, It is true that treatment for Pseudotumour cerebri is complicated because of obesity. Therefore a formal weight loss and exercise program is required once the diagnosis is established. Programs designed for weight loss should include an exercise program and psychological consultations. Many patients do not lose enough weight and may require treatment approaches such as gastric resection or stapling.
1218509 tn?1267490923 Because I'm on 200mg of Topamax to keep my moods under control my brain has slowed down considerably. My doctor wants to put me on this brand new medication called Vvyanse. It's not avaiable here yet so I have to keep waiting for it. Anyone tried it out?
Avatar f tn I dont want to be depressed during my pregnacy over my weight cause this is very exciting for me and my husband.. can u please give me some tips to help me through this time? Things i can do to stay healthier.
1655289 tn?1326042889 Topamax does tend to cause weight loss, but trust me, this is not the way you want to lose weight. Topamax (I was taking it for bipolar) first of all did nothing for my moods. I was back in the hospital a few months after first being prescribed this, along with seroquel and ativan for panic and anxiety. That's not what makes this medicine so undesirable though. With each dose increase, I had numbness in my legs and arms. This could continue for as long as 2 weeks after a dose increase.
Avatar m tn An NSAID is good for inflammation, Anti-Seizure (like Lyrica, Neurontin or Topamax) medications are good for nerve pain. If Lyrica made your fiance too drowsy, Topamax might be a better alternative. This is what I take instead. It's in the same class, but has different side effects. Many people do not get as drowsy. Muscle relaxers can help too. Everyone's cocktail is different, because everyone's reacts differently to medications.
Avatar f tn is anyone else on these two? I was recently diagnosed with Bi-polar disorder and the doctor put me on lexapro and topamax. I have now heard horror stories about topamax and I don't want to take it. I want to know some alternatives.
614508 tn?1265281722 Has anyone had any interactions/reactions with the drug Topamax when prescribed for BPII & OCD. My understanding from the drug handout is that it is normally prescribed for migraines, seizures and weight loss. My doc has just increased my dosage to 100mg 3x per day. I have experienced some deterioration in my eyesight however I'm not sure if that's attributed to age (hadn't had my eyes examined in 2 years) or the Topamax which I've been on a lower doze for 6 weeks.
1655449 tn?1302089876 I have been on topamax for migraines for eleven months now and have lost a ton of weight...at first i had same side effects and it was very scary, but they do lessen in time and i find not having as many migraines well worth the first 6 weeks of strange speech, confusion, side pain etc. i make myself drink enough water each day...and with the help of excercise i have lost around 27kgs...definitly dampens my appetite!!.
2932946 tn?1344722012 I also have often had a nagging headache post-surgery (nothing like before, but I'd still rather not have it) and am currently trying Diamox Sequels to reduce my high ICP. I'm on a half-dose now and it seems to help with the headache without causing the unpleasant side effects that the full dose caused. I assume that you've had a repeat MRI to make sure that you don't have a leak, pseudomeningocele, etc.?
Avatar f tn I used to take Topamax for nerver pain, it was the only anti-seizure med that really worked well for the pain, and I had three attacks of kidney stones before I found out it was the Topamax causing them. I had to stop taking it, but was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem. I did a little research on it and in a small percentage of people it actually does do this, but my urologist only knew of one other person who took Topamax and had kidney stones.
Avatar n tn t see due to this) said Topamax would change my life, it certainly did for the worse! Suffered severe weight loss (its also used for obesity), developed an overractive thyroid amongst other issues. I reported this drug to the theraputic drug association. I also get the burning nerve sensation which is terrible, I thought that was just me!
Avatar f tn It has been used by psychiatrists to treat bipolar disorder,[6][7][8] although it is not FDA approved for this purpose. This drug has been investigated for use in treatment of obesity,[9][10] especially to aid in the reduction of binge eating,[11][12] and also as a possible treatment for alcoholism.[13][14] However, these uses are not actively promoted by the manufacturer, and like its use for bipolar disorder, are off-label uses.
Avatar n tn I was just prescribed the drug for frequent migrains and was wondering why and how it causes weight loss? Does it decrease your ap?
