Loss of bone mineral density (bone mass) has been documented in HIV-infected patients treated with tenofovir long-term. British researchers decided to monitor 122 tenofovir-treated hepatitis B patients to see if they also lost bone mass, and compare them to a control group of 48 untreated-patients.
Both the control group and treated patients were scanned by X-rays to measure bone mass.
However, many women do have exposure to Tenofovir throughout their pregnancy and generally it is safe. Some head size and bone mineral density issues in the newborn are noted. So it is very much a benefit and risk exercise when deciding to take Tenofovir before the recommended third trimester. There is a recent paper discussing these issues that you may find useful:

it has no sides, only less than 1% experience lowering of gfr so kidneys function must be controlled every month for the first 6 months of therapy to see if kidneys experience a decrease in gfr (creatinine is not good because you can have lower kidnys function and normal creatinine), other sides is loss of bone mineral density but if you have active hbv even liver damage leads to loss of bone mineral density and lower vitamin D
since this is only on less than 1% cases almost every drug can low

you hae always to consider things in the correct situation, tenofovir has only kidney damage in less than 1% patients and loss of mineral density in maybe less than 1%, your hbv infection makes liver cancer in more than 1% patients, doubles risk of leukemia, i don t remeber the percentage for cirrhosis....
I'm on Tenofovir for past 7 Years and My Serum creatinine is 1.1 mg/dL and eGFR is 86 % . Rest all the parameters like BUN,URIC acid are normal. LFT is normal and HBV PCR is undetected for past 7 years

got my bone scan and there is bone density loss, osteopenia around -1.5.this worries me a lot because i take vit d3 and vit k2 mk4/mk7, i also make antiaging protocols and my latest dna methylation clock is 40yo while being 49yo chronologically (my cells were 40yo 2 years ago and hope they re even younger now).so any guy with zero prevention and older might get much more damage from tdf.i called hospital but they say TAF is not available.....
I had 3 Bone density scans done in last 6 years, and the last one which was on Friday came back showing:
Left proximal femur, the lowest score is obtained in the femoral neck. The BMD of this region is 1.134 gm/cm2 with a T-score of 1.3.Between examiniations, there has been a significant increase in the total hip BMD (.0.019 gm/cm2)
Then it says: Based on the lowest T-score, the diagnostic category if : Normal (T-score >-2.5).
However, one side effect concerns the effect of femara on bone metabolism. There is significant risk of decreasing bone mineral density and therefore cause some bone brittleness when taking this drug. I suggest you have yourself worked up for bone mineral density or osteoporosis. The bone pains should also be evaluated for the possibility of bone metastasis, which can be initially misconstrued as drug side effect. Regards and God bless.
