Common Questions and Answers about Tacrolimus kcs

2093628 tn?1332979308 I have a 5 yr old rescue long haired chi mix that has neurogenic KCS (dry eye) adopted 10/2011. We've gone thru the university vet school ophthamology treatments (cyclosporin, tacrolimus, and pilocarpine drops) since 10/11 with no response. We are currently treating with gels, drops, and ointments throughout the day and antibiotic ointment as needed. The next step appears to be having his eye removed. Has anyone had this done?
Avatar m tn The specialist reviewed all of the options with us - cyclosporine, pilocarpine or tacrolimus with sirolimus. She said that very rarely has she seen any dog respond to cyclosporine after not responding to tacrolimus. She also said that because our dog doesn't have a dry, goopy nose, that pilocarpine wouldn't be a first choice. She recommended a mix of tacrolimus with sirolimus. She said sirolimus is new. I have not been able to find anything about this drug on the internet.
Avatar m tn Optimmune contains no soap and it has been proven to be EXTREMELY effective in helping dogs with even advanced cases of KCS. I have seen dogs whose eyes are so heavily overpigmented because of the KCS return to having almost normal-looking eyes after using Optimmune for a while.
Avatar f tn and she was having problems opening it, so we went back to the vet and they did a schirmer? test and came back that she has KCS in her eye. They also did a corneal stain, and showed small a few small ulcers on both eyes. We immediately put her on an antibiotic ointment and cyclosporine. It has been almost 10 days and while there is less discharge, she is still having some trouble opening her eye, she just keeps it closed (unless she gets excited).
Avatar m tn We changed to the gel form of Genteal and Tacrolimus. The vet said he would drink more and he did. She recommended surgery for the first time. Casper has been her patient for 2+ years and she had never even suggested that there was a surgical solution. Within a week my dog was worse. I used saline soltion to clean his eyes. The next day he wouldn't pen his eyes. I put the solution in my own eye and discovered it wasn't fresh.
574219 tn?1217352418 The problem with the products that are mixed up specifically for KCS is that they are stabilized with, of all things, SOAP, which is in and of itself, extremely irritating to the eye. So even though you are treating the condition, you are still putting an irritant into the eye. Optimmune is an ointment that contains no soap, and therefore it's much more soothing to the eye.
Avatar m tn i wouldnt lower the tacrolimus dose further
Avatar n tn The excessive rubbing causes the redness and loss of hair. KCS is very common in all brachycephalic breeds (breeds with pushed-in faces) and breeds with bulging eyes. It's also common in Cocker Spaniels. Make an appointment with your vet and have him do a Schirmer Tear Test. The vet will put a small strip of paper with little "hash marks" on it right inside the lower eyelid.
Avatar m tn His cretanine is almost 1.4 or around. My question is that should he continue his TACROLIMUS tablets or should switch to some other tablets which are safe for kidneys? Secondly , in my sorrounding there is an opinion that lowering the TACROLIMUS dose also let the liver enzymes to increase? Do you favour such opinions as my father has lowered his tacrolimus dose to keep his kidneys safe? Sir ,will wait for your kind reply. Thanks.
Avatar n tn s hard to perform my job or other daily tasks when my eyelids are so inflamed. I guess steroids are the only option until they develop something better. Is Tacrolimus a promising nonsteroidal option?
Avatar f tn The treatments of this condition are application of topical corticosteroids (betamethasone, clobatesol, flucinolone) which will reduce the inflammatory process. Topical immunomodulators like pimecrolimus and tacrolimus can be used in severe conditions. I hope it helps. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor.
485948 tn?1208986708 It would not hurt to have her eyes checked, and have some tests performed. A slightly dry eye (KCS) in cats can be a secondary sequellae to a Herpes infection. Herpes infections are very common upper respiratory and eye infections in cats. Mild dehydration may also cause a tear problem. The dehydration can be sub-clinical i,e, may not even show up in blood or urine tests, and can be caused by a diet that includes dry food. Feline diets should be all wet or canned diets that are grain free.
Avatar f tn Hormonal contraceptives such as the pill and the patch may increase the blood level of tacrolimus. Tacrolimus may also reduce the effectiveness of these hormonal contraceptives. For this reason women who could get pregnant should ideally use a non-hormonal method of contraception, eg condoms, to prevent pregnancy while taking this medicine. Seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Avatar n tn there are prograf assistance programs that the company offers. If this is not feasible than using other cheaper medications such as verapamil for example for HTN for example will alllow much lower doses of prograf to be used (it delays metabolism of the medication) and thus it comes out cheaper.
Avatar f tn AS I HAVE SUFFERED BREATHLESSNESS AND WALKING PROBLEMS,I HAVE BEEN TAKEN OFF TACROLIMUS AND PUT ON NEORAL-YET THERE IS NO IMPROVEMENT IN MY CONDITION.IS THERE ANY OTHER ANTI REJECTION DRUG THAT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND (I HAVE HAD A LIVER TRANSPLANT RECENTLY)? IN YOUR EXPERIENCE,CAN MY SITUATION BE IMPROVED?THANKS.
Avatar n tn It may not be hard to get to a veterinary school, depending where you live. When our dog had bone cancer, I did a Google search for universities with veterinary programs. It turned out to be the best decision, even though it was 3 hours away. Our dog got 3+ years more of a happy life, when all of our local vets (I got 3 different opinions) said to put him down. It was reasonably priced, they often have payment programs, and you get excellent, state of the art care.
Avatar m tn i would be extremely cautious about using it until more data is available especially since its purported effects on tacrolimus and cyclosporine metabolism are extreme. i am quite confident that there will be clinical trials coming down the road extremely soon.
Avatar f tn Could there be something else going on besides her KCS or perhaps maybe an infection of some sort is to blame for all this? I will appreciate any feedback. Thank you!
Avatar f tn My tacrolimus level is 4.2 after 4 months of liver transplant, Is it dangerous? what should i do?
Avatar n tn Treatment is by topical steroids or oral therapy of corticosteroids in severe cases. Topical creams like tacrolimus ointment (Protopic) and pimecrolimus cream (Elidel) are also useful. If still the symptoms do not improve then please get a clinical examination done by a dermatologist. I hope it helps. Take care and please do keep me posted in case you have any additional doubts. Kind regards.
461838 tn?1255790216 OLT recipients with HCV were randomized to receive tacrolimus+daclizumab (steroid-free) vs. tacrolimus+corticosteroids during 1999-2001 and then tacrolimus+mycophenolate mofetil (MMF)+daclizumab (steroid-free) vs. tacrolimus+MMF+corticosteroids during 2002-2005. Patients in the steroid-free arm of both periods received no steroids except for treating biopsy-proven rejection.
Avatar n tn Not the right place for this question. Sorry.
Avatar f tn I am taking Tacrolimus 3mg, Myfortic 360mg, twice a day. My Creatine is 1.25 and BUN is 29. I am also interested in your opinion.
Avatar f tn I was initially taking Tacrolimus and then I was switched to Sirolimus. I cannot remember why my immunosuppressive was changed but Sirolimus was pretty new then and maybe my surgeon wanted to try it and see how I did. I wasn't very fond of it as I recall. It came in small packets and was an oily solution. It's been a while but I do remember that. I probably mentioned this to my surgeon and that could be the reason that he switched me back.
