Common Questions and Answers about Strattera for children with autism

strattera

Avatar m tn Yesterday, I noticed that you suggested Strattera to another mom for tics. Our doctor told us also to change to Strattera.
Avatar f tn I am tired of getting beat up, and I especially feel very bad for her because she cannot communicate with me how she is feeling. I feel like maybe we should go back to the risperidone even though she gains weight and even though she was still aggressive. It wasn't as bad as it is now. Our quality of life is getting worse as she gets older. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Avatar n tn My 8 year old stepson has been on strattera for ADHD for 7 weeks now. 25mg a day. there have been no side affects except a little tired in the begining few weeks. obviously everyone can react different but my son has had no problems with it. I do watch him closely just in case any arise. I also like that it is a non-stimulant compared to everything else out there.

Avatar f tn Strattera, Risperdal, and Clonidine. We are looking for another doctor who might know more about Autism and his psychologist doesn't seem to get it. We also want to know of other meds for a teen that might work better. Any thoughts out there? The older he gets, the more emotional he gets. Hormones for sure, so has someone gone through this before? He was diagnosed as mildly autistic when he was younger, but now they are saying he is low functioning. Going nuts.
Avatar f tn A combined analysis of 12 studies of Strattera showed that in children and teens this risk was 0.4% for those taking Strattera compared to none for those taking a sugar pill. A similar analysis in adults treated with Strattera did not reveal an increased risk of suicidal thoughts. Call your doctor right away if your child has thoughts of suicide or sudden changes in mood or behavior, especially at the beginning of treatment or after a change in dose.
Avatar f tn We are also this month going to try to get her put on Strattera for problems with concentration and other problems at school. I also read it is good for anxiety. Has anyone had any problems with this drug? Can anyone suggest any other medications or therapies that would be helpful?
Avatar f tn Strattera is not a psychostimulant. Ritalin, Metadate Anderall are. Strattera is anothr type of medicine for ADD that doctors usually use when the stimulants do not work. Strattera rate of working is not as high as stimulants.
Avatar f tn You are certainly not alone in this and emotionality is certainly not unique to children diagnosed with autism during the teenage years. I’m sure you want your grandson to be happy and healthy and affect changes like you are describing becomes even more difficult to deal with if the child is unable to tell you why he or she is upset.
Avatar f tn I agree with Sarah. I'd want a second opinion for a five year old and one visit being diagnosed like that. And the"probably" something else would concern me too. Good luck.
Avatar f tn t been on medicine for it since college. Starts out with my former medicine, strattera, but when I would take it I felt my heart was out of control and my blood pressure went up. Now on wellbutrin for about a week but I feel foggy and it is causing worse ibs. Not sure if that side effect will go away but giving it a try. My question is, if anyone can answer, why was I able to take strattera as a child with 0 side effects and then high heart rate etc now.
Avatar f tn Strattera is a non stimulant med used for ADHD. Whether or not it would be effective for you, I don't know. This site lists almost all possible treatment options. Although for some reason, I couldn't find Strattera listed, so you need to google that. The site is http://www.healing-arts.org/children/ADHD/medications.htm And the following site also lists (with info) non stimulant meds (they do mention strattera). http://www.baltimorepsych.com/NonStimulants.
Avatar f tn I think it is really important to have the plan written by someone with significant experience in using applied behavior analysis with children with autism (you can search for board certified behavior analysts in your region at www.bacb.com). It is really crucial that the behavior intervention plan matches the reason your son is acting out. For example, some children act out when they are given difficult wotrk to do.
Avatar n tn I am very concerned about my 15 year old son who has high functioning autism. His social skills seem to be worse than the other kids in his asperger classroom and nothing seems to be improving. He speaks before thinking and often his remarks are off the wall without common sense. People assume he is not bright, but in IQ testing, his verbal and nonverbal areas are in the normal range.
Avatar n tn Not being familiar with the properties of Strattera what does it do . .is it a muscle relaxer as it works for his ADD condition? Just curious as i really don't have an answer but trying to figure it out with you .. there are some other great people here who may have ideas and even some products outside of Prevacid are mentioned in the archives worth looking into perhaps. Could it be the combo of the two meds are causing the reflux ?
Avatar n tn My main concern now is that they (his doctor and mother) have elevated his drug regimine to include 3 drugs that have known interactions with each other, 1 (Concerta) that is known to potentially cause sudden death, and 2 (Clonidine and Zolpidem) that are not recommended for children. Although Strattera does have some potential side effects, I believe it is by far the safest.
Avatar n tn It does not suppress appetite and is quite an effective medication, particularly for those children who are inattentive but not hyperactive.
Avatar n tn I posted a question on april 9th about symptoms Im noticing with my son,My son is 8 years old took him to mD today she spent over 1 hour with my son watching him asking questions (this is a new MD) in her observation she was pretty sure he has aspergers syndrome, I have to take him for a head ct, she also thought my son also has mild cp may be diabetic and hypothyroidism, Just waiting for blood results and scans she refered me to a psychiatrist,to do exam to confirm diagnoisI really been hit wit
Avatar n tn t take any medicine anymore for the adhd because my doctor would only prescribe strattera for children and it made him deathly sick and it caused him to sleep about 20 hours a day, so I took him off of it. My older son truely has adhd and although the strattera doesn't help him anymore, he has come a long way in the two years we have made interventions for him.
Avatar f tn Also, he has been screend for autism and he doesnt have that. He has many spectrum like behaviors but has too many social skills to qualify. When I would read descrptions of aspergers I felt sure he had that.
536849 tn?1213582734 my nephew is two months away from turning four, he has shown signs of having autism, and is awaiting an appointment with a specialist he has recently begun eating his own feces...........could this be another sign of the autism?
Avatar f tn 1) Why did the tics suddenly happen after being on Concerta for 6 months....did adding the Intuniv have something to do with? I know Intuniv should help with tics....very confused on this... 2) What is the probability that the tics will go away?...and if so...how long does it take? 3) The Dr. Mentioned starting Strattera again as a trial...I have read a lot of bad stuff about this med...what are the factual pros and cons? 4) Have read a little on Wellbutrin...
6583170 tn?1385317938 There is no real link between MMR vaccine and autism. The only thing that was a cause for concern with childhood vaccinations was a mercury based preservative called Thimerosal. Studies Even showed that that didn't even have a direct link with an increased chance of autism developing in children but just to be safe the FDA banned it from being used in childhood vaccinations. I believe by 2001, if not earlier, all childhood vaccinations no longer contained that ingredient.
