If you break embryonic and fetal development into thirds then when you are in your 28th week the baby begins its final third of development. (Gestation is 266 days or 38 weeks of development). So either way you look at it you are in your 3rd trimester!

A babies heartbeat can be detected by ultrasound anywhere from 5 1/2 to 7 weeks. It can depend on the equipment, the skill of the tech and a host of other things. So it doesn't mean the fetal pole and heartbeat aren't there, just that they could not be detected.
Unfortunately the only thing you can really do now is wait. A follow up u/s should be done in about a week and that should give you your answers.
Usually the 5th week you will see the gestational sac but maybe no fetal pole. By week 6-7 you should see the fetal pole and if you're lucky a heartbeat. By week 8 you should get a heartbeat. So if you are only 5 weeks it sounds like your development is very good seeing both a fetal pole and hb. Did he mention what the heartrate was?? I am not sure what the "likely" fetal pole means because if there is a heartbeat then there is definitely a fetal pole there!!

My LMP period started around 8/12. I am 41, 1st pregnancy. I've had two dr appts, results below:
First u/s and blood test on 9/24. The u/s showed a sac and yolk but no fetal pole. HCG level 28,100. 2nd u/s on 10/6. The u/s showed a sac, yolk and now “a group of cells which is the baby” (they did not use the term “fetal pole” and I’m not sure if it is the same thing or not). But now there was no hb detected.
The doctors wait until 20 weeks because of development. I forget what the doctor told me but there is something very important in development around 20 weeks. They check at 20 week a to be sure it developed right. My doctor always says that the ultrasound is to make sure everything is okay not to find out what the baby is.
i have booked a private scan at 10 weeks cos i seriously cant wait to find out if baby is okay. did anyone else worry in the early stages and get an early scan? i only had three weeks of mild nausea and food aversion now i feel fine at 10 weeks so i get worried something is wrong. my boobs are still tender but thats really it.

I personally think it's selfish and foolish to drink during pregnancy. Your putting your baby's health at risk and fetal development during the first trimester is crucial. Any alcohol use during pregnancy can result in a child being born with FASD. To me it's not worth the risks.

Yes, that is too early to see a fetal pole or cardiac activity. In ten days, you should see a nice change with development of a little "grain of rice" with a tiny flickering heart beat. I wish you the best!
Week 6 - Gestational Age (Fetal age 4 weeks)
5 ½ to 6 ½ weeks is usually a very good time to detect either a fetal pole or even a fetal heart beat by vaginal ultrasound. The fetal pole is the first visible sign of a developing embryo.
