I have wet macular degeneration as well as COPD and my ophthamalogist theorizes that the weird "blisters" that are appearing at the site of the oozing veins may be caused by the steroid content of my asthma medication ( namely Spiriva). So he has asked me to change to something that doesn't contain any steroids. My pulmonologist has suggested I add floridil to my albuterol nebulizer.

If you are taking Duoneb there is no point in taking Spiriva because Spiriva is related to the ipratropium that is a consitituant of Duoneb. Also Spiriva is extremely drying which may be why you are feeling so uncomfortable.
To be using Duoneb five or six times a day you would have to be close to death. Obviously you aren't, so you can cut back without any problem. I have serious COPD and my use of Duoneb averages 3.5 vials daily.
The big question is - how bad is your COPD?
COPD Fev 45-50% , have been on Flovent,/Spiriva/ Proair 10 years and am sensitive to medications. I dont smoke.
Have had increasingly reactive airways for 3 years, had first Dxed exacerbation last fall triggered by woodsmoke. No congestion and did not take antibiotics. Pulmo said airways 'sounded just like asthma' but do not have that Dx. Airways felt raspy, swollen, inflamed. Have slowly recovered on a higher dose of Flovent.
I have been put on Advair, yes to expensive!!!!...proair recue inhalier,spiriva still on, albuterol nebulizer, which i use every 4hrs, daily...and not to mention the antibiotic I was told I had to stay on for my bretheing(theophylline), and it is all pretty costly!..since the lost of his job i hav only been able to get my albuterol nebulizer meds, Theophylline, spiriva inhaler,. and numerous packs of Musinex 1200mg daily, to keep the mucus at bay!!!
My physician has prescribed both Advair 50/250 and Spiriva, along with Pro Air p4-6h prn and nebulizer treatment (Albuterol) q4-6h prn. I am still having problems breathing. Is it okay to take these all at the same time? Will there be any side effects?
I have emphysema. i use advair twice a day and spiriva one a day. The biggest problem for me is that I always seem to havemucus build up in the mornings. My doctor has told me to try mucinex, but that doesn't seem to work all the time. So i try using albuterol in the morning to help loosen up the mucus so that I can breath better.
can the bloating casue the breathing problem with those who suffer COPD?
second question: am I doing harm using dilator more often than prescribed till I get into Dr. hopefully, Monday?
I use Duoneb (similar to combivent) in a nebulizer and find it very helpful. I discontinued the use of Advair (which is basically a combination of Serevent and Flovent) because it almost killed me (choking). It also caused adrenal fatigue, was harming my eyes, and was subverting my immune system.
In place of Advair I use a variety of natural anti-inflammatories and mucolytics. My health is much improved and I found that the severe bronchitis I had was in fact CAUSED by the Advair.
It is Lisinopril, 10 mg in the morning and evening. Other than this I take Spiriva once a day and use albuterol by nebulizer. I also take many supplements every day.
I was fine yesterday after going to the doctor, in fact felt like a new person shortly after and I am assuming this is due to that shot they gave me. I felt great this morning when I went back to the doctor for a short re-check. I have another appointment for next Monday.
I am considering stopping treatment due to no change. I am on Advair 5000, Singulair 10mg, Spiriva, Claritin, Albuterol (both by nebulizer and fast inhaler) prednisone every month, for the last 2 years and I don't feel any better. Coughing is my main symptom, in which I will hyperventilate to the point of passing out (almost).
Hi, thanks so much for your response. I'm on Spiriva and use a Nebulizer with Albuterol. I have a rescue inhaler for my asthma. I did have a weeks course of Prednisone about 3 or 4 weeks ago when I had a bad spell. I don't want Advair as I used it for a couple of years for asthma before the COPD was diagnosed and didn't see any benefit from it at all.
Hopefully my doctor will help me find a way to improve a bit.
I used to visit other parts of Mexico at 7300 - 9000 feet high, but now, sadly, avoid those places because it gets a little more difficult to walk at those altitudes every year. I do use Spiriva every 36 hours, Albuteral inhalers and Combivent inhalers daily. I have a nebulizer but try to avoid using that; only if I do have a cold and a lot of phlegm to get rid of. Doctors, especially in the USA are of little help. Here, they actually care and are helpful.
Yes! Spiriva is a long acting 24 hour broncho-dialator. So this means it will dialate your airway, make it bigger so air can pass thru it easier.
Adviar: is a cortico-steriod. This means it is a anti-inflammatory type med that will take the inflammed part and calm it down.
These are two very different medications. one holds it open and the other calms down the inflammed parts.
after checking, this bladder problem is a side effect of Spiriva...I had used Spiriva for over a year and the infections/non-infections got more frequent until I had to go to the urologist...I was on Azo Standard most of the time. I alerted my pulmonologist as to my problem and he took me off the Spiriva. Since being off the Spiriva, my breathing has gotten worse....my Dr said there was no replacement for Spiriva...I'm writing to find out what others might know.
I'll try to be brief. My dr. ordered a pft last week (following three ct scans over 16 months). I had been using Spiriva for three years. My question is how long should I have been off the Spiriva for the test to show accurate results? Shouldn't I have had the test before being given Spiriva? Thanks in advance.
m on Advair or oral steroids. So I try to avoid them if at all possible. I am currently using Spiriva HandiHaler which I believe is not suppose to have any steroids but I keep getting Thrush in my mouth ! It is a constant problem even just using the Duoneb, and especially if I have to take any antibiotics. I'm, constantly having to take Fluconazole tablets after a round of antibiotics for candidiasis under my breasts and in my mouth.
I will have to check that out. I still us a nebulizer with Duoneb. A big help and no side effects that I can see, as long as I keep the mist out of my eyes.
coughing phlegm from lungs for the past six months, have taken antibiotics with no results, did take predrisone together with SPIRIVA 18 mcg and ADVAIR 500/50 for the past month. Still coughing up phlegm and have limited lung capacity. Any suggestions comments.

I am 83 and have had this ailment was diagnosed about 15 years ago, although I think the first signs appeared about 30 years ago. I am on 2 liters of oxygen and used a nebulizer. I do not take prednisone or inhaled steroids as I found they affected my health very badly. I do use Duoneb and natural anti-inflammatories. I have not found any benefit from Spiriva or Singulair. The progress of my illness is slow and my pulmonologist refuses to speculate on my life expectancy.
Sinusitis, chronic bronchitis then COPD. All because doctors refused to treat the sinusitis. Because of this I can't afford the meds that are the staple of COPD treatment. But it did lead me into an alternative that works better and with less side effects. Benadryl works on the same principle as does ipratropium but I have never been told to use it. I can't tolerate Advair (causes angina) nor Albuterol (causes worse congestion and coughing).
