Seborrheic dermatitis scalp and hair loss

Common Questions and Answers about Seborrheic dermatitis scalp and hair loss

seborrheic-dermatitis

Avatar n tn There are two kinds of hair loss. There is hair loss with visible scalp disease and there is hair loss without scalp disease. In your case, the hair loss may be associated with both the fungal infection and another underlying condition of seborrheic dermatitis. At this point, there is really no effective medical therapy for hair loss. If your hair loss is associated with tinea and seborrheic dermatitis then the underlying disorders need to be addressed first.
Avatar m tn If the symptoms persist, then it would be best to get it confirmed from a trichologist. Regarding the hair loss, unless and until the hair follicles are intact, hair will regrow. Otherwise you may need hair transplantation. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps.
Avatar n tn if someone has seborrheic dermatitis around his lips and chin, does it means he has HIV, or is seborrheic dermatitis a normal skin condition that affect many people.
Avatar f tn Hi You might be suffering from scalp (seborrheic) dermatitis or scalp eczema or scalp psoriasis. The exact diagnosis depends on clinical examination. Seborrheic dermatitis presents as dry skin on the scalp, which flakes off (dandruff). The skin on the face, behind the ears, eyelids, nose and chest may also be affected. Symptoms of scalp eczema may include greasy yellowish scales that may turn flake off along intensely itchy and inflamed red scalp.
Avatar m tn My scalp is extremely itchy as well. Ive already come to terms with my hair loss on the top of my scalp, but I dont want to loose the hair on my sides or my eyebrows!! please help!!!!
Avatar n tn In seborrheic dermatitis, the scalp is greasy and when severe may present with scales. The cause of seborrheic dermatitis is still unknown although yeast infections, stress and weather have been implicated. A dermatologist is the best person to consult with this. Vigorous and frequent shampooing is the mainstay of therapy more than the type of shampoo being used. So wash your hair frequently and scrub the scalp vigorously. Discuss this with your dermatologist.
Avatar m tn The fact that there is associated hair loss,a fungal infection and seborrheic dermatitis have to be considered here .These are conditions that usually involve the scapl and may lead to hair loss. Take antihistamines for the itching. Also, continue using the topical medications and try to observe your condition. If there are any possible known triggers like abrasive soaps and cleansers, food, heat, smoke and alcohol, avoid them as much as possible.
Avatar f tn For those with underlying scalp conditions, seborrheic dermatitis, tinea capitis and discoid lupus may be differentials. However, you have not mentioned of any redness or scaling on the scalp. May I ask a few more questions. You have mentioned of a prior brain surgery. Did this scalp pain happened way before the hair loss? Did scalp pain persist after surgery or is this something more recent?
Avatar f tn Hi This may be a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis presents with overproduction of sebum by the sebaceous glands. In most cases, they may present with scales and may affect other parts of the body like the chest and the face. Have you had this assessed by your dermatologist? You may need medicated shampoos for this. This condition is shown to be aggravated and triggered by stress and weather changes.
Avatar n tn There is no psoriasis, or seborrheic dermatitis. The bx just said inflamation my scalp just feels tight . There is no patches of hair loss , it is pretty even all over just more thin or the left side. There is no flaking or itching just burning and tingling. The area that is red you can see tiny little viens comming to the top of the scalp . Alot of the scalp looks pink like I have had a sun burn. I had my hormones checked last week normal.
Avatar f tn my scalp is very scaly and itchy, and Nizarol shampoo only relieves it for one day. The scales drop onto my face giving me a rash..any advice please. My hair falls out pretty badly when I comb it.
Avatar n tn Hi I understand that you are worried about this. Hair loss may be due to several things. A scalp condition such as seborrheic dermatitis which may be causing the dandruff appears to be the prime culprit in your case. Use the medicated shampoos only twice a week and in between, use regular shampoos .It is necessary that frequent and vigorous shampooing with a mild shampoo may be done. Application of topical corticosteroids may also be done if the dandruff persists despite the shampooing.
Avatar m tn Hello, The yellow waxy crusts on the scalp are due to dandruff and it can cause seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp and face. Use over-the-counter dandruff or medicated shampoos. Shampoo the hair vigorously and frequently (preferably daily). Active ingredients in these shampoos include salicylic acid, coal tar, zinc, resorcin, ketoconazole, or selenium. If the symptoms persist, then it would be best to get it confirmed from a dermatologist.Hope it helps. Hope it helps.Kind regards.
Avatar n tn Hi, I have been getting electrolysis on my face and have recently been diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if the Seborrheic dermatitis may have been caused by the damaging of the hair follicles. I have very mild seb derm but it flares up about four days after an electrolysis session on my face. Any help would be appreciated.
Avatar f tn Help!!! I have been dealing with a bizarre scalp issue. I was first diagnosed with seborria dermatitis (sp.) in December. I have very thick hair. I was prescribed a shampoo "capex" that was a cortisone. After 6 months I developed what I believe is foliculitis....I think I was misdiagnosed all along. I see dirt, greenish hair, brown specks, etc. etc....could it be a fungus? I do have some breakage but I could have caused this by pulling on it.
Avatar n tn However, if there is some itchiness noted on the scalp, then we may have to consider seborrheic dermatitis or a fungal infection at this point. Seborrheic dermatitis is far more common. It causes what we commonly term as dandruff. Are there any associated scaling or flaking on the scalp?
Avatar n tn Since my symptoms began, I noticed that my hair has began to thin on my scalp. One doctor diagnosed me to have contact dermatitis and the second seborrheic dematitis. They said to use nizoral shampoo and advantan/betnovate. However,I don't have a scaly scalp/dandruff and haven't come into contact with a contaminant. The medications don't seem to have made a difference.I researched thoroughly and think I may have folliculitis, I was wondering what your opinions are please?
Avatar n tn Regarding your response to my question regarding "scalp infection", I looked up seborrheic dermatitis and it says it is another word for dandruff and that the common sign is flakes. In my first e-mail, I listed that I had no flakes. I have red bumps on my scalp in that one area (the scalp behind the lower part of my right ear and down to the end of my hairline just on my right side) and on my right underarm. So I'm wondering how can it be seborrheic dermatitis?
Avatar m tn And good news is the derm told me to wear it all I want to because it will not make the problem worse. And can actually benefit because it keeps the scalp dry and keeps other dirt and dust off the scalp. A moist scalp due to sweat dirt or sebum scalp oil can lead to irritation . I also had a slight touch of seb derm around my eyebrows .
Avatar m tn I'll be honest here. I masturbated 4 years and I feel like i lost essential fluids which are causing hair loss now. But now I don't masturbate, I am keeping my diet healthy. In those 4 years I remember, my water intake was low like I drank 2-3 glass of water. But now i am drinking 8-10 glasses of water daily and i dnt feel thirsty. My scalp is itchy and full of white little flakes and its causing hair fall daily. I have brittle and dry hair.
Avatar f tn mjtimberwolves i have 3 tiny red patches on my scalp more likely of a pimple size and it’s not itchy, it does flakes right after i dry my wet hair, i just want to ask if it is a seborrhea dermatitis or not, by the way it’s fading,i had it for 8days now since i stopped taking my new hormonal pill.
Avatar n tn Itchy scalp and hair loss may be due to a fungal infection or seborrheic dermatitis. You may need to obtain scrapings from the scalp for microscopic evaluation. This would ascertain the presence of a fungal infection. Are you worrying a lot lately? Hormonal problems, stress and decreased immune response may trigger some changes in the body. Keep a close consult with your gynecologist for close monitoring as indicated by your pap smear results.
Avatar f tn Thanks for the info! I have tried some of the shampoos with salicylic acid or coal tar - all it did was make my scalp worse- sort of firery sore and super itchy. that's why I think its dry scalp and not dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis - the symptoms just don't fit. my hair and scalp are dry, not greasy - even if i go 3 days between shampoos my hair is not greasy. the flakes are small and white and not oily.
