7087196 tn?1389306119 I was diagnosed with Bi-Polar in 2005 and also had a child in 2005. My son is now 8 years old and acts like I did around his age. He says and acts in violent ways. He has not done anything to extreme thankfully.
Avatar n tn He still gets shor tempered on the risperdal and tenex and prozac. We have upped all the amounts except the risperdal is still at 2 mg a day. He was much better in the beginning. He takes 3 mg of tenex, 2 mg of risperdal and 10 mg of prozac. He still is impulsive and gets into arguments. It seems to be an ongoing problem to adjust his meds. We see the psychaitrist monthly. He has been on other meds and they either made him worse or stopped working.
Avatar f tn The atypical antipsychotics can often cause weight gain in both children and adults. Abilify, (aripiprazole) is less likely to cause weight gain or metabolic problems." (from - http://www.baltimorepsych.com/NonStimulants.htm). Point being is that if all he is taking now is risperdal and he is not getting a help either med wise or behavioral therapy for his ADHD - then his ADHD is probably making both his and your life pretty miserable.
Avatar n tn I must disagree with the other poster. Risperdal was approved by the FDA for use in children on the spectrum in 2006 to treat *repeated* bouts of aggression and irritability as are other anti-psychotics. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 3 and has been taking Risperidone (Risperdal) for 4 years in varying dosages. Without it he could not have attended mainstream schooling as his aggressive outbursts were a danger to himself, other children and adults.
Avatar f tn I am concerned because he is not even three yet and it has not been approved for use (by the FDA) in children under five. He was only prescribed .25 mg, but I am jut not sure if it is normal to start meds this early? Also, if anyone has a child on it how long did it take before you noticed a difference in behaviors?
Avatar n tn I wonder about the Risperdal - I believe it is not approved for children under 10 in the U.S. (unless, you are living in another country, then it could be approved there, but I doubt it). ODD is a very serious diagnosis and could be a preceder to bi-polar or other mood/personality disorders (is there a history of severe mental health issues on either side of the family?).
Avatar m tn is resperdal suitable for children who are highly irritable when they are at the age of 3 or 4 months? This discussion is related to Risperdal.
Avatar n tn what are withdrawl effects on children age 9year old female coming off risperidone? dosages was 0.5mg of rispiradone in the morning with 72 mg of concerta for ADHD. AND A 0.
Avatar f tn is it that common to put a child that young under medication, or to diagnose him as ADHD , i am living in medial east.
Avatar f tn He was diagnosed with bipolar and then also with ADHD he takes risperdal for bipolar and adderall for adhd. The adderall has been wonderful it really helped a lot the risperdal i am not so sure as he still gets very angry and aggressive he has also been recently diagnosed with social anxiety disorder.
Avatar f tn The side affect that concerned me was the eating. Sometimes he would eat until he vomited. Apparently, risperdal turns off the switch in the brain that signals fullness. His eating was becoming a real problem, so we asked about Abilify. He's been on that a good while, and it works. He's taking 5mg 3 times per day. It's not perfect, but it's better than the rages. I will warn you that it does make him kind of sleepy, but not too bad.
Avatar f tn Kapvay is the only drug which is approved by FDA for the treatment of ADHD in children of age 6-18 .This comes in a non stimulant extensive release tablet form and is always recommended by doctors for children. Kapvay has some other off label uses as well like treating insomnia, in treatment of menopausal symptoms. Sometimes it is also used in treatment of conditions like psychiatric disorders like hyperarousal, sleeping disorder. It can also be used as a mild sedative.
Avatar n tn There was no order and the fighting and hitting and screaming and jumping and total disrespect to others in the house the entire 9 yards !So the Dr add a dose of Risperdal at night to help curve the extreme behavior changes when the pill wore off . So now they take their concerta and risperdal at 7 am every morning and at 7 pm they take one more risperdal pill and life is so much better in our home now .
406058 tn?1210594632 As Sandman mentioned, sometimes it takes different meds to treat different children. Some children need different dosages, some need totally different meds. IF the meds are not working, then call the dr-- no point in continuing them if its worse!!!
Avatar f tn simple motor tics, shrugging of shoulders, eye blinking, opening jaw. No, these can be behaviours common to those suffering from anxiety. But, there should be other indications as well - the reason for my question - "could this be the issue"? By the way, your "list" missed many common behaviours to anxiety; behaviours seen only in children and not adults.
Avatar f tn Zoloft is one of the SSRI medications used for the treatment of anxiety. A few of the children in our group have used this medication and did well on it. The Risperdal is an anti-psychotic drug and is not used in anxiety issues (so I assume this is for the Bi-polar aspect of this illness) and so I am not overly familar with that medication.
Avatar f tn The Risperdal can have many negative effects on children. These type of anti-psychotic drugs have never been tested on children so the long term side effects of children using this drug are relatively unknown. My brother was put on this drug when he was younger and has suffered from extreme weight gain and facial tics. The tics never go away - even with stopping the drug. Risperdal is not usually used for PTSD or ADHD as it is an anti-psychotic.
Avatar f tn First, I can find no indication that risperdal is indicated for ADHD. " In 2006, the FDA approved risperidone for the treatment of irritability in children and adolescents with autism.[6] The FDA's decision was based in part on a study of autistic people with severe and enduring problems of violent meltdowns, aggression, and self-injury; risperidone is not recommended for autistic people with mild aggression and explosive behavior without an enduring pattern.
Avatar m tn my doctor discontinued risperdal because it caused milk in my breast. that was june 8.......... well i still got milk in my breast.... now what?
Avatar m tn We know that Risperdal causes dopamine receptor blockade. Dopamine in turn keeps prolactin levels in check. Therefore Risperdal allows for a raise in prolactin levels and this may cause genital shrinkage. My question is, is this reversible once he discontinues Risperdal?
Avatar n tn The Department of Geriatrics at Johns Hopkins University conducted a dedicated seminar at Mount Sinai Hospital geriatrics department three years ago warning against inappropriate use of risperdal in the elderly.
Avatar n tn I would like to know what would be a good allergy medicine that can be taken with risperdal. I have given my son benadryal in the past and he would become calm but since the risperdal he gets very hyper and stays up all night. My son has seasonal allergies. I have given him claritin and it does not work. Thank you for any advice you can give.
Avatar f tn I just started Invegra 3mg daily which is the new drug in lieu of Risperdal so I will be curious as to how it works. Supposedly, it is just like Risperdal but much more tolerated with less side effects. Maybe something to ask your doc about although I cant comment on personal usage as of yet since it is so new for me.
273579 tn?1256655053 There's a chance your 2-yr-old has autism, and the metabolic testing they're doing is the correct way to go right now because autism is thought to be affected by (among other things) a problem with digestive absorption and some enzymes. Your child's symptoms point to autism, with the arm flapping, lack of speech, screaming, agression and self-injury, plus children get it before the age of 3. Your docs diagnosed developmental delay, and that's in keeping with autism, too.
Avatar m tn //www.medscape.com/viewarticle/874722 You should have a diagnosis from your doctor. Anyway to ask the question specifically? When do you do a med check?
Avatar f tn Such radical treatments are indeed needed, some doctors and experts say, to help young children with severe problems stay safe and in school or day care. In 2006, the F.D.A. did approve treating children as young as 5 with Risperdal if they had autistic disorder and aggressive behavior, self-injury tendencies, tantrums or severe mood swings. Two other drugs, Seroquel from AstraZeneca and Abilify from Bristol-Myers Squibb, are permitted for youths 10 or older with bipolar disorder.
Avatar f tn I have asked my gyno several times about Mirena but she refuses to put one in since I have not had any children. Apparently it has a higher chance of embedding into the uterus if you have never had a child. So that is out. And the copper-T causes heavier bleeding and more painful periods so that is out. So it seems I may have to have a D and C or something if this period doesn't stop soon or of it continues to produce 2+ weeks of bleeding at every period.
