1516809 tn?1345082764 Risperdal is a blacklisted drug and use in the elderly is contraindicated. Several years ago the geriatrics department of Johns Hopkins conducted a special seminar at Mount Sinai geriatrics center in New York specifically warning physicians of the dangers of respirdal and the inappropriateness of administration in the elderly. There are physicians who disagree with this conclusion and continue to prescribe the medication.
Avatar n tn Hello, My father who is 80 years of age suffers from Alzheimer's and has been in a nursing home for 5 years. He has been on a "low" does of Risperdal for the same period of time. His caregivers claim that it is for his own safety and theirs as he becomes agitated periodically. They have not described to me in any detail how this agitation manifests itself.
Avatar f tn First, I can find no indication that risperdal is indicated for ADHD. " In 2006, the FDA approved risperidone for the treatment of irritability in children and adolescents with autism.[6] The FDA's decision was based in part on a study of autistic people with severe and enduring problems of violent meltdowns, aggression, and self-injury; risperidone is not recommended for autistic people with mild aggression and explosive behavior without an enduring pattern.
Avatar n tn We are very new to this, but my question is my loved one has been on Depakote and Risperdal for 8 days now and the mood stabilizer seems to be working great, completely stable in moods but still in the hospital. My concern is that the delusions are still there and even getting worse. Could it be the confinement or is there another medication to address this. What is the Risperdal supposed to address. Are there medications available to address the delusions?

Avatar m tn My son just recently started taking risperdal. I am discovering that good help is very difficult to find. He is currently taking 1.5 mg a day. Last night he could not sleep at all and was afraid because he said the medication made him feel tired but his thoughts are still racing and he can't sleep. Is this something I should inform his doctor about or should I wait for his next week appointment.
Avatar m tn Hi Isabelle, what a beautiful name! Everyone calls me Tuck, even my family. So though it's a nickname it truly is what most ppl call me. That is unless they are angry at me! :o) Nice to meet you. I tried to respond to you last night but my new laptop decided to act up... so sorry I am tardy to your post. In May one lot of Risperidone 2mg Tablets, marketed by Patriot Pharmaceuticals, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Janssen Pharmaceuticals was recalled.
900662 tn?1469390305 Just a follow up, The MS Nero was quite clear that it is not Alzheimer's doesn't look like Alzheimer's was hundred percent sure it's not Alzheimer's so it is off label use.. Avatar n tn It looks like the Risperdal could be the reason for the motor tics. Which would make more sense then the Concerta being the problem. And Risperdal could be the reason for the weight gain too. Here is a link to the info I was looking at on Risperdal - http://www.crazymeds.us/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Meds/Risperdal By the way, don't suddenly stop the Risperdal. You must sloooowly come off of it. Good luck!
Avatar m tn Risperdal is such an interesting drug and being used for a wide range of things now. It's an atypical anti psychotic originally used for schizophrenia. It was a game changer for that disorder. While risperdal is used off label for things like autism and a lot of people that have autism (anywhere on the spectrum) often have overlapping adhd as a secondary diagnosis, this doesn't mean that the syptoms of adhd will improve with risperdal.
Avatar m tn My wife has not been been told that she has this disease, but shows all the systoms. It starts out with a pain her HEAD then she has slurred speach, drooling some times bad some times not but with 4 days the pains get so bad that she is not able to do enything thats when she shows most of the signs of alzheimer's. we have all the test done for this but none of the test shows that she has ALZHEIMER'S.
Avatar f tn Hi, Some cases of early-onset AD, called familial AD (FAD), are inherited. FAD is caused by a number of different gene mutations on chromosomes 21, 14, and 1, and each of these mutations causes abnormal proteins to be formed. Even if only one of these mutated genes is inherited from a parent, the person will almost always develop early-onset AD. This inheritance pattern is referred to as “autosomal dominant” inheritance.
2007231 tn?1327807016 As I do have faith that one day my fathers Alzheimer's Disease will be treated one day. "Let go and let god" they say. We finally found something that treats alzheimer's and we have noticed much improvement. I was reading through research documents from www.smartdrugsforthought.com and found several profound medical documents and studies with the use of a cognitive and memory supplement, called Piracetam, in Alzheimer's patients.
Avatar m tn Wellbutrin is the least likely out of the anti-depressents to be likely to cause mania but it still can happen. With the SSRI's its far more common. It would be very rare for Risperdal to cause mania as generally it has a full mood stablization effect (in addition to an antipsychotic effect) so if that is the only medication you are taking it might be an adverse reaction. You could look up the medication website and discuss that with your psychiatrist.
Avatar m tn Recently I was asked to help a young man who had been taking Risperdal for a psychotic illness and who noticed that while taking this his penis and testicles seemed to shrink. There is very little information in the literature about this. We know that Risperdal causes dopamine receptor blockade. Dopamine in turn keeps prolactin levels in check. Therefore Risperdal allows for a raise in prolactin levels and this may cause genital shrinkage.
Avatar n tn My oldest son is on Risperdal,as well as three other meds. He has done quite well with Allegra for seasonal allergies, and even better with Zyrtec. Zyrtec is OTC but allegra is not. Both are well tolerated with Risperdal. Benaadryl is not good with Risperdal. My son, age 17, is zonked out when he takes both. He basically is out like a light and doesn't wake up in the morning (until about 12 hours later) the few times he has taken it. Not good at all.
Avatar f tn I was Risperdal for about 15yrs. I had granulomas all over ( they look like large ring worm spots) and I developed prediabetes which is why I stopped it.
Avatar m tn I had very very very good luck with Risperdal combined with Zoloft. I was able to even come off both for 6 years without issue. That is something you need to discuss with your pdoc though and work on tapering under the pdoc's care. Anyway, I found that Risperdal was a game changer and 99.9% of my fears subsided. Best of luck!!!
Avatar n tn Hi, I had been on Risperdal for about 15 months and I recently stopped taking Risperdal. First of all, my periods which had stopped shortly after starting Risperdal returned and my breasts which were producing milk dried up but now I suffer from insomnia. I sometimes get only 1 1/2 hours of sleep a night. Will this go away on its own?
559509 tn?1216180446 Does anyone out there take Risperdal for Bipolar Disorder? I don't see hardly any mention of it around this site. Does it make you gain weight like Depakote? Does anyone out there take it for Bipolar Disorder Type 2? Any opinions or thoughts? I am currently on Lamictal and Welbutrin. I show mixed tendencies ( is that type 1 ),and my Dr gave me Risperdal for what appeard to be a manic state( I was off all meds at the time except Welbutrin which may have excaserbated my mania).
