I was taking risperdal for 6 month (4MG) and stopped "cold turkey" as the doctor suggested. now for 2 month i am having insomnia. can not sleep more then 3 hours per night.
What can i do and how long should it take to get my normal sleep? how long the insomnia last?
He was diagnosed with bipolar and then also with ADHD he takes risperdal for bipolar and adderall for adhd. The adderall has been wonderful it really helped a lot the risperdal i am not so sure as he still gets very angry and aggressive he has also been recently diagnosed with social anxiety disorder.
I am bipolar 2 with PTSD. I was on Geodon, risperdal and lithium. The geodon was added last, and the risperdal was weaning down. I took it when it was new. For a few months, I did okay with it and didn't really have any problems. It was stopped because it eventually caused perceptual,,, especially visual, disturbances all of a sudden, and I ended up misjudging the freeway and drove my car over the embankment.
I think it is a good medicine for PTSD and it helps with bipolar. It didn't work for me, however, but my brother takes it and it works for him.
So they keep putting me on risperdal all the time, and when I take this stupid thing I keep hallucinating and seeing things in strange green color. So I stop taking it, and I stop hallucinating and I'm able to keep off of it, but I keep getting depressed and they keep on saying that I'm bipolar, partially because my mom keeps on lying to them. Other antipsychotics make me so and unable to keep focused as well, they make me loose all emotions and I hate taking them. How do I solve this?
Oh ok well when I lookd it up it said 4 bipolar and schizophrenid.

It is interesting that they started him on Risperdal instead of a stimulant med. Risperdal is a great med for bipolar - especially dysphoric manias and/or mixed states instead of euphoric manias. So I am guessing that early on they might have been having trouble figuring out if he had Bipolar or ADHD?
At any rate, that is a tough combination for a child to have - and perhaps even harder on the parent.
The problem is that both areas need to be treated.
Your friend might have a drug indused bipolar disorder versus a biological one. I was born bipolar and had symptoms all of my life until properly diagnosed and have never been that into drugs or alcohol. It was mostly recreational for me and only pot with some light drinking. Anyhow, her best solution would be to get into a treatment program and get off of all of the drugs in order to get a clean system and address the issue of how to be properly medicated for her bipolar illness.
I just weaned myself off risperdal and lamictal and I have terrible insomnia. Maybe it's just coincidental because I'm 51 and probably perimenopausal but it is impossible for me to get a good night's sleep without Ambien. It takes 1 1/2 hours to fall asleep and I toss and turn all night. So I graduated in 2006 and was on Zoloft but not doing well so I went to a shrink that I paid for. She did an assessment on me and concluded I was bipolar and because I was bipolar that could be a big reason why the ssri drugs did not really work. So she put me on Depakote and gave me a low dose of klodopin so I could wean off the benzos. In 2 days time after taking the Depakote, all my anxiety and panic went away! It was a miracle for me. I felt normal again like I used to feel.
As you might now, there are currently 3 widely accepted forms of bipolar disorder, that is, bipolar type I, bipolar type II, and cyclothymia. However, a spectrum view of bipolar disorder is becoming popular. For example, you can picture a line with unipolar depression (major depression only) at point A, and with full blown bipolar type I at the end of the line, point B. If a person has major depression only, then they will fall close to point A on the line.
In the past I have had a lot of problems with anxiety and manic phases. I am diagnosed as a rapid cycling bipolar and although I do have some depression problems, I feel that I am much more on the manic side of the spectrum. Luckily, I seem to have no real ill effect for going off of the Risperdal. I am currently still on 400mg of Lamictal. I am hoping to start a family with my husband in the next few years. I do not want to be on any meds while I am pregnant/breastfeeding.
This is hard isnt it to se your son feeling like this my sympathys are with you, ask your prescribing Doctor if once he is weaned off the resperdal , if you can try leaving him without meds, a lot of caring parents are now trying using food supplements to help their children, and it has been noted that a Multiple Vitamin with B Complex and Vitamin C and also Fish oil is benificial to children, if you google this there is a lot of information and look at the thread on this forum that starts &quo
I was put on Risperdal 1/2 mg in sept 13 08,recently (last week stopped it ) had to me slighty taper,Im wondering if yoou really neeed to taper,Im not bipolar I have depression and anxiety and was put on Risperdal for racing thoughts,Does any one or has anyone ever just stopped Risperdal without tapering,,my pharmisist said its not nesa sarry byt i dont realy know for sure,i think sometimes he just tells me what he thinks i want to hear,,,,THanks
Hi. I am 23 and was diagnosed bipolar when I was 18 or 19 I can't remember. Right now im taking welbutrin, risperdal, ativan, seroquel, and lamictal.
The problem I have is a strange feeling in my head that moves around. It goes away when I place my hands on my head and i'm wondering if it's a symptom of bipolar.
For the past 2 months my husband who was diagnosed 4 months ago with BP has been gradually feeling better with Depakote and Risperdal. For about a month now his father and I really thought his psychotic symptoms had disappeared, he has been 'okay' at home (depressed, sometimes cranky) but nothing exaggerated!
Yesterday he was extremely angry and said al these 'crazy' things about me and other people, totally psychotic.

It should be noted that the atypical antipsychotics (from Risperdal onwards) are unlike Thorazine and the older typical antipsychotics specifically approved for use as mood stabilizers and generally more effective in this regard but as was stated each person responds differently to each medication but this could be discussed as well.

I only heard of it happening once to another person in my partial hospitalization group many years ago. I had a dissociative episode one time, but it was more like depersonalization. Your experience sounds like the dissociative amnesia that that other person had. He lost time. For myself, I only had it once. It was a long time ago, and I can't really remember the circumstances. I believe it lasted for 2 hours but I couldn't really say. I just didn't have a sense of time.
