Common Questions and Answers about Risperdal and autism

risperdal

Avatar f tn The past year or so though hes been showing signs of ADD or ADHD. His Dr has prescribed him Risperdal because and medication isnt something she just randomly hands out so I know he needs it. I just have a few questions that wont be answered until he sees another Dr which I am waiting for a referral to. My questions are: Whats the difference between ADD/ADHD? How will I be able to tell if the Risperdal is having a positive effect or a negative effect and how soon will I know of either?

Avatar n tn since sunday he has been very irritable and aggressive, with very frequent outburst of screaming constantly, hitting himself in the head and bitting, pinching, hitting, kicking, pushing, and scratching himself and others...the tenex kicks in some we can tell but he truly acts like he can not control it and seems like withdrawl from the risperdal which his dr did not tell us to taper off of it at all...we are worried please help!
Avatar n tn This question is in regard to a pre-adolescent boy with autism. The Risperdal no longer controls his behaviors; he is laughing hysterically all the time, running, is violent and teachers are afraid of him. He is non-verbal and is a large boy for his age of 9 years and is entering puberty. The medicine does apparently help him sleep, but that is the only benefit we are now seeing. Thank you for your reply. This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.
Avatar f tn Well, seizures are one of the side effects of risperdal and can occur any time after starting the medication. However, if they have started after eight years of medications, other causes too should be looked into. You may need an EEG. Please consult your doctor regarding this immediately. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you.
Avatar n tn I am writing for answers for my 15 Year old son with Autism. He has been on Risperdal for about 5 years now and was taking 4mg x 2 daily, HIGH, I KNOW. He is 5'10" 165 lbs. For about the past 6 months he has started with some new behaviors. I relayed these to his Psychiatrist and she has had no comment on them. I researched them myself and found they mimic Tardive dyskinesia in many ways. I have found a new Psychiatrist but can not get in to see her for approx 2 more weeks.
1142551 tn?1264736930 I have tried dieting, prescribed sleep aids because I thought he was tired (he hardly slept), schedules, pictures, everything. And the aggression just got worse. Like I said the risperdal was a lqst resort. He will be 4 in Sept. and his dose is .25mg cut in half with one half in AM and one half in the night. Since starting 3 days ago the past 2 mornings he has had huge unbelievable tantrums (which isnt out of character generally speaking).
1572541 tn?1310208423 for my 5 yr old son who was dx with autism. For 3 years his aggression worsen and he developed tics and gained a tremendous amount of weight which started raising his BP among other things. The dr. decided to wing him off and he ended up developing tardive dyskinsea. That will always be a haunting day I will never forget watching my son suffer from this with the chorea movements. His autism regressed so bad I had to teach him to feed himself again.
16638194 tn?1449934941 I am in desperate need of some insight regarding medication for Autism and ADHD. My son is 7 years old. He started out on Risperdal when he was 4 but we quickly took him off because he quickly ballooned by 15 lbs. in 1 month. We eventually ended up on Abilify and Tenex (Guanfacine) and he's been taking that combination for about 3 years. Now we are at the point where those two meds were not working at all and we were already at the approved dosage limits.
273579 tn?1256655053 You are going to need a home teacher who will work one-on-one with your child, who is expert in autism, to begin to get them to control their behavior and pay attention and speak. If this is done before the age of 7, then in the long-run they will relax more, fit in better with the family and in society. You can go to www.autism-society.org to find more info on autism, in case that is what the physicians determine is the problem with your child.
Avatar m tn It was a game changer for that disorder. While risperdal is used off label for things like autism and a lot of people that have autism (anywhere on the spectrum) often have overlapping adhd as a secondary diagnosis, this doesn't mean that the syptoms of adhd will improve with risperdal. Risperdal seems to help with aggressive behavior and behavior problems in general and likely communication. with kids on the spectrum. It seems to help with irritability and aggressiveness.
Avatar n tn My 3 year old son has been diagnosed with ODD and has been put on risperdal but he is still very violent towards my 11 month old daughter, myself and my mum. He hits, pushes, bites and he also sits on my daughter pusher, pulls her hair and sometimes bangs her head into things. I am at my wits end not knowing what to do.
5757880 tn?1395578022 Hello! So we went for the 2nd part of the evaluation regarding my son. He is eight years old and is currently diagnosed with ADHD, anxiety issues and possible PDD. She is currently still evaluating him regarding the PDD because she does not want to underdiagnose him or overdiagnose him. I understand that, that's fine and we have another appointment with her in one month. However, she did give me a list of the medication children with PDD would normally take, so I can research it.
Avatar f tn We have used Risperdal with our 12 year old son in the past, 2nd and 3rd grade, but due to weight gain he had to be taken off it. We had major problems with sleep so when he went off the meds he went back to not sleeping. Then we found Melatonin, it is a god sent. It is a natural supplement that has helped a lot of children with atuism and other disorders that effect sleeping. As for the agression we have tried behavioral programs that help with it. Good luck.
Avatar n tn My daughter has Autism and, as a result of her sensory issues, only eats an extremely limited number of foods. She will not eat in unfamiliar or "smelly" places (many food smells bother her). She will not eat foods that are broken (crackers, french fries), the "wrong" temperature, or the "wrong" color. She will actually go very long periods of time without eating before she will eat something that she deems "wrong.
Avatar m tn My grandson is 9 and has ADHD and Autism. He takes Depakot 1000mg daily and Risperadon 2mg daily. I have noticed an increase in his aggression within the last two weeks. Do these two meds have a tendency to increase aggress?
Avatar f tn You want to keep bringing up the baby so its not a surprise...I know my 7 year old was a year and a half when her sister was born and she was so terrified she pissed herself at the hospital when her sister was only a few hours old...and she has autism...they don't seem to like change...
Avatar m tn Then, about 2 ½ years ago I had a near-psychotic meltdown, mostly about the devil and evil spirits, and was diagnosed with OCD and prescribed Anafranil and Zyprexa, which helped with the irrational thinking and obsessive thoughts a little. Between now and then, I have been diagnosed with OCD, Social anxiety disorder, GAD, major depressive disorder, ADHD, and most recently, aspergers/high functioning autism.
Avatar f tn My 10 year old daughter is suffering from PTSD, the Psychiatrist that she is seeing has her on 4 different medicines. These medicines are Prozac 20mg, Kapvay .2mg, Risperdal .5mg, and Imipramine. My question is first is this safe to mix and second what side effects could this mixture cause?
Avatar f tn The finding is the latest in a succession of recent reports contradicting the long-held assumption that the new drugs, which include Risperdal, Zyprexa and Seroquel, are safer than the older and much less expensive medications that they replaced. The risk of death from the drugs is not high, on average about 3 percent in a person being treated at least 10 years, according to the study, published Thursday in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Avatar m tn I am wondering if this is a plausible cause. He was also on Risperdal and Depakote and Trileptal and Terazadone and Lamictal, of course not all at the same time. I am sure I spelled all these meds wrong. We are having trouble finding any professional who will take an active interest in the urgency of our problem with both the aggression and the onset of these tic behaviors. We really need some help.
Avatar n tn I would like to know what would be a good allergy medicine that can be taken with risperdal. I have given my son benadryal in the past and he would become calm but since the risperdal he gets very hyper and stays up all night. My son has seasonal allergies. I have given him claritin and it does not work. Thank you for any advice you can give.
Avatar f tn First, I can find no indication that risperdal is indicated for ADHD. " In 2006, the FDA approved risperidone for the treatment of irritability in children and adolescents with autism.[6] The FDA's decision was based in part on a study of autistic people with severe and enduring problems of violent meltdowns, aggression, and self-injury; risperidone is not recommended for autistic people with mild aggression and explosive behavior without an enduring pattern.
Avatar n tn It is well established that autism spectrum disorders have a genetic origin and that this genetic inheritance results in abnormal brain growth regulation. There is much less information about potential immune system involvement in autism. There have been many reports of persons with autism having verified immune system "problems." This has led many people to suggest that there is immune system dysregulation involved.
Avatar f tn Posted this on community forum also. My grandson who is 14 years old came home yesterday in such an emotional state. He sobbed so hard and began hitting his chest saying "No Hitting" as he looked his mom in the eyes.
Avatar f tn My 8 year old son has adhd and autism. Hes not violent towards other children but is very violent towards himself. He starts occupational therapy next week and just started seeing a psychiatrist a month ago. His next appt is Thursday morning and the doctor is wanting to put him on abilify or resperdil and I was wondering if anyone has used either of these and if they helped or had any bad side effects.
Avatar m tn He has been diagnosed with dual-disorder, down syndrome and autism. Some children, because the lack of communication skills and the inability to express emotions and feelings, act out. We are now showing him to express his emotions and feelings by asking him what's wrong. Are you angry, mad frustrated, what? We are using an iPad. Talking him through the frustration. We have seen sow slight changes. no hair pulling for a week now. It has been a long and difficult road.
Avatar f tn It will take a few months to build up to a full dose of Lamictal and if you have angry outbursts that get physical your psychiatrist might want you to take Risperdal and then as the Lamictal builds up to a full dose see if you can do without it so that you have full stability in the meantime as Risperdal unlike Lamictal works right away. Risperdal of course has a good mood stabilization effect. They can coordinate about this as well.
Avatar n tn Well it depends. Risperdal is an antipsychotic and it is effective in treating psychosis. Asperger's is a developmental disability and thus doesn't specifically respond to antipsychotics. What is the Risperdal specifically being used for? Also there is a community specifically for Asperger's.
