Avatar n tn My bone density plummeted from 15% above normal to 25% below normal in 6 years (post menopause). Could Prevacid excellerate bone loss. I don't have many risk factors for osteoporosis, no family history. I take Synthroid, Verapamil, Prevacid. I eat lots of dairy, greens, almonds. I exercise daily. I eat a fairly low carb diet, minimal alcohol, caffeine, and cola. This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.
Avatar m tn My first visit the dentist told me I have severe bone loss and they want to remove all my teeth and add bone grafts from a cadaver to my jaw line and fit me with dentures. This is totally shocking, as I have no issues with my teeth at all. She said they should be loose, but I cannot move them by hand. I take Prevacid daily and have heard it contributes to bone loss. Does anyone have information on this, or on alternative treatments - or affordable treatments in other countries.
Avatar f tn But when too much calcium is taken up into blood vessel walls, the calcium becomes incorporated into bone-like deposits that can lead to loss of elasticity and narrowing of the blood vessels. Vitamin D helps regulate calcium retention and activity, which may further enhance this arterial calcification. If blood vessels in the brain are affected, damage could lead to brain lesions. "At this point," says Dr.
Avatar n tn My daughter also takes pentasa and WAS taking prevacid. The prevacid didn't seem to help her and our GI switched her to prilosec. My daughter has had no complaints with the prilosec. Both prevacid and prilosec have the same actions so they do the same things. The only interaction that I know of with prevacid and penicillin is with a type of penicillin called Ampicillin and it may inhibit the absorption of the prevacid.
Avatar n tn Nearly 10 years on Prevacid and it may have caused the bone problems....just great. What it came down to was choosing for me. Given my family history of cancer, esophogeal cancer is probably higher on the list of risks for me than a broken hip, so I will continue to take the Prevacid and not the Actonel. I hope that some information in this post will help you. Good Luck.
Avatar f tn my doctor prescribed me zantac 75mg and prevacid. Both are helping but little by little.
1026267 tn?1257591273 I'm glad you've decided to wait. The bisphosphonate drugs (all of them, Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel, etc) have black box warnings required by the FDA. The FDA has also recommended that these drugs be taken 5 years or less. (my OBGYN confirmd) After that, they just make the bone hard & brittle. There is concern about osteonecrosis of the jaw (bone death), esphogal cancer , and more recently reports of increased femur fractures in patients taking it long term.
Avatar f tn The surgery worked best on my lower teeth, slowing down the bone loss significantly and rebuilding bone/tooth connection (that's what the gortex is for. That type of surgery is even more advanced now, I think). It didn't have as much success with my more advanced upper teeth. You have to identify all compromised teeth and undergo aggressive treatment (surgery, root planing..), and then take very good care of your teeth and gums for the rest of your life.
Avatar f tn dentist said I have 50% bone loss. Is there anything else I can do to prevent further bone loss?
Avatar m tn I have lost bone under my bridge and the dentist says I need partials ...is there any way to graft bone and put the bridge back?
Avatar n tn She saw the doctor today and he told her to stop the iron supplement and gave her prevacid to see if it is due a stomach problem. Today she took prevacid and ate again. Tonight, she is again after eating having the same problems. We checked her blood pressure right now, it came out very low 80/60. Is this good because the drug is working ? or bad and should the drug dosage be reduced ? or is this a sign of her actually getting better and be able to be off the drug ?

881463 tn?1245345649 I am concerned because of the back /chest pain and the slightly high ALP of 145 (lab says up to 129 u/l(in normal range) and what I have read about bone cancer on a few sites. My calcium and PTH are normal and my doctor is not concerned about bone cancer and a bone scan I asked about.
Avatar n tn Hello, I am in my early twenties and recently had my upper left premolar extracted and replaced with an implant. I know that bone loss can occur when a tooth is extracted, and the implant is supposed to prevent such bone loss from occurring, but will there be any bone loss at all? I am really concerned because I am so young and don't want my facial appearance to change. Thank you so much.
Avatar f tn I have periodontitis and consequently have bone loss throughout my mouth. I recently had #15 extracted. Today I went for my one week postoperative checkup. The site had not healed; I am to return in one week. My concern: I don't understand why my dentist didn't do any restorative procedures when he extracted the tooth. He gave me an explaination, but I didn't understand.
Avatar n tn I have also had severe irritable bowel for 30 plus years - I take Azulfidine, zantac, prevacid, immodium and elavil. One of the doctors I have seen which include the head of oral medicine at Penn suggests that this could be from the elavil - over the last 6 months I have weened from 50 mg at night to 25 mg at night but no real change in symptoms. One other thing - one day I did not take the first dosage of prevacid and my moth was full of thick white foam.
Avatar m tn Hello my name is Babbal I am new to the forum. Ok so here is my issue I weigh 230 lbs absolutley unintentional I cannot lose weight no matter what I consume only about a thousand calories a day not because i starve myself because frankly that is my capacity when a growing male my age needs about 2500. 231441 tn?1333892766 Keep in mind that numerous sources have said that conditions for bone loss are not caused by excessive thyroid levels. If bone loss conditions don't exist, then thyroid levels would have no impact. If bone loss conditions already exist, higher metabolism due to increased thyroid levels may increase the rate of bone loss. Effective treatment should be to address the conditions causing bone loss, not by withholding thyroid meds.
Avatar n tn It seems that extended use is supposedly not harmful to the body. I take a 20mg tablet daily and I can function fully and eat and drink absolutely anything as long as I have had the capsule. I soon know about it if I forget to take it! That seldom happens I assure you. My question is: I have at least one bowel movement daily - usually after I get up in the morning. My stools are always loose and certainly smell very bad (so my wife assures me!).
Avatar m tn Thyroid hormone does not cause bone loss, it simply increases metabolism and therefore the rate of the current bone formation or loss. Most older women are losing bone due to their combined sex steroid, DHEA, Vitamin D, and growth hormone deficiencies. The solution is not life-long hypothyroidism, but the correction of their other deficiencies. " http://hormonerestoration.com/files/ThyroidPMD.
296025 tn?1233256719 Prevacid is a Protein Pump Inhibitor (PPI) like Aciphex, Nexium and Prilosec. It's indicated for GERD (chronic acid reflux) and as far as I know has nothing to do with treating Hep C, other than if you happen to have GERD. I believe Prilosec is a generic sold OTC but not 100% sure so speak to your doctor and pharmacist regarding switching off.
Avatar n tn i take prevacid for my gerd, can this cause atrial fibrillation This discussion is related to <a href='/posts/show/937646'>acid reflux</a>.
547002 tn?1219797376 In July i was having some swallowing problems or thought i was and they did an EGD and found nothing but a VERY tiny hiatal hernia. My stomach lining was nice and pink. I had been taking prevacid for two weeks prior to the EGD due to the trouble swallowing NOW i want to stop taking the prevacid and every time i try i get really sick. I get weak, nauseaus and for a day or two i literally go to the bathroom constantly and have loose yellow stools with stomach cramps.
Avatar n tn My dentist has told me that I have a bite problem an the grinding pressure on my molars has caused bone loss and gum recession. I went to a periodontist a few years ago, and he agreed with the assessment of the bite problem. We discussed braces, but his concern was the the bone loss was such that once moved, the teeth might not set. So we have not done anything other than frequent cleaning, and a night guard.
Avatar f tn It is important to diagnose the type of hearing loss. Mixed hearing loss is due to both conductive defect and sensory neural defect. The sensory neural defect lies behind the cochlea, which means in the auditory nerve and the passage of signals to the auditory centers in the brain. Conductive hearing loss can be treated by surgery. So if the conductive component is more than the neuro-sensory component, going for a surgery or wax removal etc may help improve the hearing.
