I am also diabetic @ bood sugars are higher than usual is this a side effect of prednisone,have 3 more days on prednisone should I stop?

Those sound like normal side effects of prednisone. Nasty drug but can save a dog's life. My golden has been taking 50mg daily for 2 months and the side effects are horrible.

I've noticed that after 3 months of daily prednisone that I have developed hair on my upper lip and jaw line. Has anyone else experienced side effects like this? I don't see how it will go away on it's own. How do you treat unwanted facial hair? This is quite upsetting to me. Thanks!

Prednisone is a very, very powerful drug, so good and bad side effects. It shuts down your own adrenal system at anything over 5-7 mg a day I believe it is, so a whole bunch of psychiatric side effects are possible. Myself I was revved up, lots of energy, very out of it though and then horrible anxiety when they tried to taper me off - really painful. Yes, a lot of what you are describing are signs of chronic Prednisone therapy - muscle wasting to the belly, a pot-bellied appearance, an enlarged liver as Dr. Coyner stated, increased thirst/appetite/urination/panting, etc. I'd start with a thorough physical exam at your vet, and some blood work (he'll likely have increased liver function tests - ALK PHOS) from being on chronic prednisone.

It looks like your doctor is starting conservatively. Side effects of steroids include increased drinking, increased urination, panting, weight gain, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections. If you feel that your dog is having trouble breathing, then he/she should be seen. If it is just increased panting, it is a side effect of the drug and not something that would make the doctor take he/she off the drug unless the dog was excessively agitated. s muzzle. Prednisone does work great, but the side effects can be very bad-diabetes and a suppressed immune system which will make kitty more vulnerable to infections. I personally use an INHALED steroid which are much less likely to cause those problems-I'm not sure if these are available to cats or not. I'd definitely ask the vet about that-it would control your kitty's symptoms and make him/her a much happier kitty!

Hi again. Do you mean that you fear side effects from this dose of Prednisone that you didn't get from much larger doses of the IV? Could you say why this is? Actually, IVSM is intravenous methylprednisolone, and it's considerably stronger than just Prednisone, even at the same dosage (as I learned a few weeks ago when we had quite a discussion here about this). So you've had much more of this than you'd thought.

The symptoms you are experiencing I believe totally are related to the prednisone and its side effects. Some of them are secondary side effects, i.e., increased blood glucose will cause increased thirst and urination, as well as vision changes. Hi, as far the present symptoms are concerend, probably they are due to prednisone only. Verapamil is the drug given in prophylaxis of migraine but it can not abort the attack once it get started. May be you need to taper the dose of prednisone as this drug is never withdrawn instantly. Do consult doctor for side effects.

I know it is the side effects but was wondering if anyone has any ideas for relief of it. My back hurts as well I do use a heating pad on it and sometimes it helps but the neck, shoulders, and stomach are so uncomfortable. Does anyone do anything that helps with this?
