I am 53 female w/SLE, systemic lupus for almost 10 years. Barrett's esophagus, GERD, gastic paralysis, fibromyalgi, chronic fatigue, Sicca syndrome, list goes on.....This is something new...sudden very severe shooting pain going up right side of neck, carotid area, sometimes into ear, but not always. Relieved with nitroglycerin. Any guesses as to what this could be?
The pain lasts anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. I have been prescribed nitroglycerin to take as needed for chest pain and this medicine surely helps. I've had several EKGs and cardiac enzymes done which were all normal. I also had a threadmill/stress test done which was normal. My cardiologist thinks the the probability of me having an occluded/blocked coronary artery is very low.
I prefer the baclofen, but I am still bothered by the side effects (headache, drowsiness). My spasms are triggered by GERD. Getting the GERD under control will be the answer to my spasms so I have an appt. with a surgeon on Tues. about Nissen Fundoplication. My diagnosis was confirmed after an endoscopy with biopsies for H. pylori, 48 hr. pH bravo, and manometry.
I'm a Raynaud's Phenomen patients who has the CREST syndrome and i use the nitroglycerin patches to control my raynaud's. Can you tell me if the patches used in this way would cause your acid reflux to be worse. When i took the lowest dose of nitroglycerin patches 0.1 didn't notice any but had to move up and now i do. Will this be something that my body may take an adjustment period for before i notice a different of not having symptoms again?
In many cases, problem such as gastritis and esophageal erosion due to GERD precede the development of esophageal spasms. It's thought that the erosive process allows the acid to penetrate through to the underlying nerves and in some manner irritate them enough to cause spasms of the esophagus. Spasms are the presence of uncoordinated muscular movements within the esophagus that can result in a lot of chest pain that often appears to be connected with the heart.
I have had a complete heart work-up, including a heart cath (all normal, no blockages) I also had an EGD which was negative for any GERD or nasty bacteria--and with my history of cancer, he was quick to tell me no cancer either. Can he really tell that from an EGD? I don't know where do I go from here? The GI doc says maybe Esophogeal Spasms, but wouldn't he have been able to tell that from the EGD?
Hi im suffering from this Gerd acid reflux since 2004, is this curable completely or does it requires any surgery.I also have a query whether can be cured by CERAGEM 9 ball therapy.this is introduced recently by the korean people.
If you miss a dose of Nitroglycerin Patch, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once. When used for long periods of time without a break, some people develop a physical need to continue taking Nitroglycerin Patch. This is known as physical DEPENDENCE. Do not suddenly stop taking Nitroglycerin Patch without your doctor's approval.
Recently I had a stent put into a branch and it was close to the main artery and the Dr said the plaque shifted. He ballooned the main artery and I felt fine. After a few days of being fine I had a sudden onset of chest pressure and jaw pain and it was relieved with 2 nitroglycerin. I've noticed chest pressure since then sometimes with jaw pain, sometimes without and burning at times under my sternum.
I still had stable angina every time I did some for of cardio activity or is I ate something with sodium. I started using Nitroglycerin patches and even have the pills just in case my angina episode occurs.
I had a date and I read online that you can't take viagra and any nitrates cause it can drop your blood pressure really low. So I stopped using my nitroglycerin for about 48 hours so I can take the Viagra.
t offer any specific knowledge other than I have know people who have heart pain and take nitroglycerin (I believe it is) to relieve the pain. The one person I recall was older than 20, but was just middle age when he had that prescribed. He said he also has some heart rhythm problems but does not take any treatment for those.
Pylori and have been treated for it and it cleared up. I suffer from GERD and eat several small meals a day and sometimes sleep the first half of the night in a hammock to aid digestion. I have had several endoscopies done which showed no negative signs. Ultrasound on my gall bladder was OK. My heart's OK. I am presently on Lansoprazol(which I found was the best medication for my GERD) 30 Mg once a day. Sometimes I add Motillium to that. I have been on this ritual now for many months.

I take a nitrate (isosorbide) for more than 6 years 3 times before going to gym for workout. My blood pressure does not drop between intervals...in fact I was told to have intervals of nitrate free period. It is true, nitro dilates the coronary vessels and prevents angina (chest pain). The patch should only be worn for up to 12 to 14 hours a day, or as directed by your doctor, but continued use with no interruptions can cause a tolerance for drug....
I only take isosorbide prior to a workout, and nitro when engaged in an activity that brings on angina. I understand your doctors are suggesting taking isosorbide daily as aschemia does not always produce angina even though the heart cells are not getting sufficient blood supply. This can lead to a silent heart attack so the medication is recommended continuously whether there is angina or not and older people in general are likely to have a silent heart attack.
Hi there. You have undergone a detailed cardiac evaluation, excluding angina and heart attacks. There is no typical cardiogenic chest pain, which is crushing precordial pain radiating to the jaw, arm and neck, relieved with sublingual nitrates. other possibilities for the muscle spasms can be chest injuries, previous chest surgery, possible culprit, any history of athletics, stress fractures , pulled chest muscles.
The doctor said the left heart was okay but found a narrowing in the right heart which caused coronary spasms during the test. IV nitroglycerin during the test stopped the spasms and dilated the vessel. He did not mention any other problems and recommended sublingual nitroglycerin to treat the spasms as they occur.
The same with his recent heart catherization was chest pressure. In the ER he was given 2 nitroglycerin, 5 minutes apart, the chest pressure went away after the 2nd nitroglycerin.
Does any good specialist in cardiology think that my husband should have the open heart surgery for bypasses considering the risks regarding his age, his diabetes?
I would appreciate very explanatory answers, easy to understand, what to do in my husband's situation.

I assume the diagnosis of hyperreactive responses not only to the constrictor effects of acetylcholine, but also the dilator effects of nitroglycerin were detected diffusely in the epicardial coronary arteries of patients with coronary spastic angina.
The goal of treatment is to control chest pain and to prevent heart attack. The pain is relieved by a medicine called nitroglycerin (dilates coronary vessels). You have been prescribed norvasc and that should relieve any chest pains.
I had asked the doctor in the ER how do you know when you are having a heart attack from the gerd if the gerd can mimic the symptoms with the chest tightening/spasms/radiating out from the center of the chest. He just shrugged his shoulders...said you can't.
So, I am wondering what would have triggered this and if I should go to ER if this worsens.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
My 54 year old "healthy" husband received a stent yesterday due to a 99% LAD blockage! He is the typical type A personality and this only adds to his already stress overload. I realize we are lucky he is still here and thankful for medical technology. I am just concerned that this will forever be a constant worry for him. Any suggestions of how I can help him. Also I asked his MD about having nitroglycerin to have on hand and he said that this wasn't necessary???
