Common Questions and Answers about Niaspan information side effects

niaspan

Avatar n tn When I complained about the side effects to my doctor, he said that sometimes patients have fewer side effects if they take ibuprophen at the same time. I tried that for a week but found taking the ibuprophen did nothing to lower my side effects, so I stopped.
Avatar n tn Well, it depends on what kind of medication you are on. I am taking Niaspan for cholestoral and these are the side effects of it. When your body have enough of these vitamins, it flushes out of body like this. It is advised by proffessionals to take an aspirin half an hour before taking Niaspan to avoid this flush. In my case, I simply stopped taking Niaspan and seek alternative from my doctor. It is always good to see doctor in such cases. I hope this is helpful to you.
Avatar n tn In an effort to increase my HDL, I take Niaspan & Zocor.....Recently my MD upped the Zocor from 5mgl. to 10mgl.... Last couple weeks, have had more trouble sleeping, usually waking up after a dream (not nightmares, but somewhat vivid dreams)...I've checked out few sites, & saw that statins can cause sleep problems....Have others here had sleep problems while taking a statin?........
7052683 tn?1392938795 If you are on a very high dose of Niaspan then less common side effects can be fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, headache and rash. But my husband is on 500mg with no problem. I don't know what they consider a high dose. The Niaspan is only really for lowering your Triglycerides not the cholesterol. The new data that has come out shows it doesn't really work on the cholesterol only the triglycerides. The cough, and sore throat are not symptoms of Niaspan.
Avatar n tn Crestor is an atypical statin in that it raises the HDL by 5-10%, but more importantly decreases through pleomorphic effects the crp level, There is some data that increasing HDL with Niaspan and gemfibrozil in men decreases mortallity if their initial HDL is below 35-40. I would probably start a statin, and see what happens to your ldl and hdl. If the hdl remains low, then I would add gemfibrozil to raise it ( since Niaspan did not work).
Avatar n tn He knows I eat healthy but that I have eliminated temporarily (for last 6 months) exercise due to scare associated possible lung cancer diagnosis (mentally I just do not want to work out - yet). He has recommended Niaspan (500). I can find zero information on the web about reducing CRP with any prescription drug. Do other doctors look to reduce CRP levels w/Niaspan - a drug designed to improve CHOL and Triglyceride levels?
Avatar n tn Check out the side-effects of Lipitor. That particular statin has a lot of side-effects, some very serious. There is a website (not sure of the web address but you can Google it) called Stopped Our Statins. There is a lot of good information on there. I would look at the side-effects of the Lipitor before panicking that it might be something else. There are many new statins out there that don't cause so many side-effects. Hope this helps.
Avatar n tn The Fenofibrate can cause bloating indigestion, stomach pain, and increased liver enzymes or liver problems in addition to other side effects. The Zetia can cause some of these too. Have they tested your liver enzymes yet? If so were they normal? There are other drugs for lowering cholesterol and triglycerides that work as well. You can ask him to have you try Lipitor (generic) and there is now a generic Niaspan. I know because my husband is on it.
Avatar f tn Like... they said at 10mg there are very few side-effects and at 20mg there are noticeable side-effects. But, you obviously don't want to change the dose on your own, as this can be extremely dangerous! But, it would be worth talking to your doctor about if the side-effects don't go away fast enough. Although... most of the time... with SSRIs in general I find, it can take 2 to 4 weeks for side-effects to go away and then they're gone for good.
1286779 tn?1400012806 There is an expert forum here at Med Help for pharmacy information. You might try that one and see if the pharmacist can give you more details on the side effects of all your mom's meds. It may be a combination of the lyrica and cymbalta causing the trouble rather than only one of them. Best of luck to you and your mom. I know it's not easy to watch her in pain and now having more trouble from her meds.
Avatar m tn ... but in Mayo Clinic website .. they warn from statin side effects against liver .. Statin side effects: Weigh the benefits and risks Liver damage Occasionally, statin use could cause your liver to increase its production of enzymes that help you digest food, drinks and medications. If the increase is only mild, you can continue to take the drug. Rarely, if the increase is severe, you may need to stop taking the drug. Your doctor might suggest a different statin.
Avatar m tn It started out of the blue, one test went from TC of 145 one year to 219 the next. I have had no side effects and have had a good handle on my lipids for the past 3 years with my LDL at an all time low of 51. Also, if you're looking for a doctor's opinion, there are none in this forum, try getting on the expert forum, you can ask a cardiologist or try the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention board, it's great as well and easier to get on. I hope this helps, good luck.
Avatar n tn I assume you have a cholesterol issue. Why not ask your doctor for a prescription for a statin medicine? You can get the drug for $4.00 a month or less, and it's much less invasive than Niaspan, in my opinion. I tried Niaspan years ago, it wasn't effective, and I would get a huge 'blushing' feeling, my face would flush and I would be miserable. Statin drugs are very safe and in my opinion, very effective.
Avatar n tn I have searched the literature and have not found any articles linking Niaspan with any form of cancer. Niaspan is just niacin, one of the B vitamins, and as far as I can tell, is not cancerous in the dose given in Niaspan. As for your other question whether a five year study can demonstrate a drug-cancer connection, it would depend partly on the study design. The strength of the association between cause (the drug) and effect (cancer) would depend on how the evidence is gathered.
Avatar n tn Hi there, Thank you for writing to us here, though I am sorry that you are struggling with side effects from the result of breast cancer medication. I am also a breast cancer survivor, however as I am triple negative, the hormonal drugs are not effective for me so unfortunately I cant speak from experience. However, that doesn't mean that I cant find out some interesting information for you in relation to libido and Arimidex.
Avatar n tn i had similar side effects when coming off the depo shot. I thought i was pregnant and took 3 tests. they went away but it took about 6mo. My docs checked my hormones and pituitary gland and they we all fine. It's probably not the effexor but ck w/ your doc anyway.
Avatar n tn Hi, Simvastatin is generally well-tolerated and side effects are rare. Minor side effects include constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, heartburn, and headache. Major side effects include abdominal pain or cramps, blurred vision, dizziness, easy bruising or bleeding, itching, muscle pain or cramps, rash, and yellowing of the skin or eyes. ref:http://www.medicinenet.com/simvastatin/article.htm This could be an allergic reaction to the drug. It will stop if the drug is withdrawn.
Avatar f tn So today my Celexa dose was upped from half a pill to 1 whole pill and the side effects are coming back like when I first started... Sweaty, can't sleep, headache, stiff neck, clenching teeth... Etc. I don't know what to do. I tried taking stuff for it, including an Oxy but still no change. What can I take to make these side effects not so bad? I don't see the dr till Thursday, so I can't ask her... If anyone has any suggestions?
Avatar f tn THOUGHT I WAS GOING CRAZY BEFORE I FOUND YOU GUY. FINALLY SAW FEED BACK FROM THE COMMUNITY THAT VERIFIED OTHERS FEELING SAME. ANYONE FEELING ANYTHING ELSE ODD? PLEASE POST. ALSO HAVE BLOATING, IRRITABILITY. AND CONTRARY TO WHAT DOCTORS SAY, I'M ALWAYS CONSTIPATED.
Avatar m tn s a daily shot and unfortunately I had terrible side effects - lost most of my hair, no energy and lost 36 lbs. On the positive side, I was able to work from home since I work in IT. As long as I didn't have to move around much I was okay. Loss of energy was the hardest part. I didn't have the energy to stand for very long. And my viral load didn't drop enough - they decided since I was having such bad side effects it was time to stop the treatment.
Avatar m tn ve done some looking around and I have sent you a private message with some information. In the meantime, ask your partner to contact the Legal Aid Society in your county to see if they can refer him/you to an attorney that may be able to give him a free consult. Another thought - Have him check with the hospital Social Services Department. They may also have some ideas on how to go about getting the right documents. I hope you are feeling a little better tonight.
Avatar n tn It is NOT appropriate for this information to be denied you. You need to add it to your medical records. At some point you may chose to go elsewhere for your eye care. Call back, be polite but assertive. Ask for the chemical name of the drops, their concentration and the brand name. If you are denied go in an sign a consent to get a copy of your records. They will probably change to photocopy the visit.
Avatar f tn Do these side effects eventually go away if you take Soboxin (sp), and then eventually no SOboxin? If a person works out and takes vitamins will this assist in getting this awful drug out of the system?
