Niaspan how to take

Common Questions and Answers about Niaspan how to take

niaspan

Avatar m tn I know that you're questioning Niaspan vs. liver. I wanted to also share with you a side effect of Niaspan is gout. If you never had it before, and start to more than likely it's the Niaspan that caused it. My husband was on Niaspan for a a couple of yrs. well, for the last yr. before discontinuing it, he kept getting flare-ups of gout. He started to get it more often than not.
Avatar n tn LOL....I'm sorry, but you just brought back memories from the fist time I took Niaspan. I have been on 2000 (yes, 2 thousand) miligrams of that stuff every night for many many years now. Just imagine how bad my side effects are on that dosage! The first time I took it, I called the ER of a hospital, due to being so scared at how I felt.
Avatar m tn I can't really comment on Niaspan. I took it for about half a year, then I had my Cholesterol checked and there was absolutely zero reduction. I had taken 400 mg and they told me, you'ld have to take 1000 mg for it to have any effect - so I stopped it. Crestor is a different story. I took it for six months and developed rhabdomyolysis. It was so bad that I tore a tendon in my back - extremely painful. That was the end of that.
Avatar n tn I have to assume that he also thinks its absurd to think that it would only take five years for a drug to cause a cancer that was 'dormant' to become active (detectable). Do you agree?
Avatar n tn t remember the strength, but this is what is oredered by my doctor. In addition to that of course I have to take a statin and Tricor. Good news is that Tricor will have a generic out in May. I was also told by my pharmicist that Plavix has a generic coming out in July. Ask your pharmicist if there is a generic of Niaspan due out any time soon. And as Flycaster has stated, with the Niacin there is a flushing feeling also.
Avatar m tn t help me, though. I was able to raise my HDL from 32 to 50 with 2000 mg of Niaspan. The niaspan also lowered my triglycerides and my LDL as well. It is interesting that your triglycerides are going up. Are you eating things like bread? Last year, I had to cut back on my carbs to lower my blood sugar. It also lower my triglycerides and I also lost weight as well (30 lbs over 9 months). I had to avoid certain vegetables like corn and potatoes.
Avatar m tn You may want to try the Niacin (Niaspan is Niacin), it will definitely increase your HDL. I'm told that if you take it with aspirin it lessens the effect of the facial flushing. Also, a fatty liver is common in overweight individuals, the doctors I volunteer with have no issues prescribing cholesterol meds to individuals with fatty livers. It is very important, however, that you get your blood panel checked every 6 months or so to watch out for changes in your liver function.
7052683 tn?1392938795 He was also on Niaspan and only gets the flushing. But he had to go down to every other day on Niaspan. So, you may have to do something like that. If you are on a very high dose of Niaspan then less common side effects can be fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, headache and rash. But my husband is on 500mg with no problem. I don't know what they consider a high dose. The Niaspan is only really for lowering your Triglycerides not the cholesterol.
Avatar m tn I'm new here and want to find out what people think about the new research on Niaspan. I can't figure out how to filter my search results by date so that I just get recent results.
Avatar n tn It is advised by proffessionals to take an aspirin half an hour before taking Niaspan to avoid this flush. In my case, I simply stopped taking Niaspan and seek alternative from my doctor. It is always good to see doctor in such cases. I hope this is helpful to you.
Avatar m tn My question, if you would be so kind as to entertain, is my internist would like to place me on statins to improve my lipid profile given the above mentioned history. I already take a low dose of Niaspan to help increase HDLs, but he would like to see my LDLs even lower. I hesitate, on the other hand, out of concern for taking such a drug for many years (I hope) with minimal necessity given a pretty darn good lipid profile.
Avatar m tn Lopressor 200 mg 2/day Plavix 2/day Lipitor 200 mg 1/day Niaspan 1500 mg Asprin 325 mg 2/day On one of them, they said I need to take it w/ applesauce! How weird is that? I think it was Niaspan - to prevent "flushing". What's flushing? Weak and tired but happy to be home. So how soon can one get back to swimming/running/biking? Which one first? Thanks y'all! I don't really talk that way!
Avatar n tn My MD & I have been trying for about 5 years now to raise my HDL (I have family history w/father dying of heart attack at 48) .Niaspan only raised it nominally, & now he wants to try Crestor.....Are statins good for raising HDL?...If one can keep their LDL down low enough say under 80, is HDL still significant?....Except for HDL, my other numbers are good...I'm non-smoker, & ideal weight, & active.....
Avatar m tn I take Niaspan which is an extended release form of niacin. Niaspan will decrease your LDL and triglycerides and increase your HDL. I would not change your niacin dose w/o talking to your doctor about it. Decreasing the dosage could decrease your HDL. I was taking 1500 mg of Niaspan at one point for about 7 months My HDL was around 42-44 for 3 measurements. It then drop to 32. My cardiologist immediately bumped my Nispan dosage to 2000 mg and my HDL went to 50 a year later.
Avatar n tn I am a 44 year old male and take 2000mg of Niaspan every day and my HDL is up from 29 to 43..my LDL is down to 66 and my trigs are 82. Niacin plus a good diet can give you good numbers. I already had heart disease before I got serious so I know how it feels to have a time bomb in your heart and I am doing my best to reverse or stop the plaque from progressing.
Avatar n tn In an effort to increase my HDL, I take Niaspan & Zocor.....Recently my MD upped the Zocor from 5mgl. to 10mgl.... Last couple weeks, have had more trouble sleeping, usually waking up after a dream (not nightmares, but somewhat vivid dreams)...I've checked out few sites, & saw that statins can cause sleep problems....Have others here had sleep problems while taking a statin?........
Avatar n tn I want to get HDL up and I exercise daily, eat fish twice a week, take Niaspan, and Krill oil. Thinking the Metoprolol is the issue. Just looking to see if anyone else has seen their HDL drop when put on Metoprolol. 25MG is low, was on 100MG... The cycling and exercising has allowed me to lower it. Can't come off of it because my heart rate will shoot up in on none.
Avatar m tn I have been taking 2000mg Niaspan daily for the last 18months, helping to raise it from 25 to 30. I run about 9miles a week, work out 3-4X at the gym each week, and drink a glass of red wine every night. I eat nuts every day, take Omega3, and rarely eat red meat - subscribing to a low cholesterol diet. Weight is 185 at 6'3", age 50. LDL is always pretty low - most recently 66.
Avatar n tn Thank you for your comments. I was talking with my husband about this and we agreed that 2 new meds may have contributed to this picture: Lovenox and Sectral. The other cardiac meds, while potentially hepatotoxic (i.e., Warfarin, Verapamil) have been longstanding and I've had many blood tests while on these with normal results. It could be that the introduction of Lovenox and Sectral just tipped the scale. I have put in a call to my cardiologist and am awaiting his response back.
Avatar n tn Unfortunately there is nothing chemical in our bodies to remove that soft fat. So what can we do? We can take a low dose of statin to stop the arteries from inflaming and tearing. That's a very good step to take. We can take a simple blood thinner to prevent clotting inside our arteries, usually in the form of aspirin. A baby aspirin will reduce risk and will not thin the blood to make internal bleeding a risk unless your INR is off the scale.
Avatar n tn what does ck stand for on blood test , is that the liver functions , alt/sgpt levels ?
745393 tn?1345077196 says this could be a serious situation. I need to know from someone please what can I take now ?. I need very bad to be on some med. I've had triple bypass in 2006 and 1 stent in 2008. I am desperate.
Avatar n tn My cardiologist started me on niaspan 500mg and we when up to 3gms per day plus zocor 20mg per day. My blood tests are very good as to my HDL is normally around 80's and my triglycerides around 30's and my LDL is normally around 50's but my LPa keeps going up and it is now up to 168! WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?
Avatar m tn Just had a second Angio in 10 mts with some blockage found on the distal side of the stent in the LAD. Cardio says I have to take my cocktail of Plavix, Metoprolol, Lipitor, Niaspan, Asprin for life. Is that par for the course? Does anyone know if there have been any long term studies done to see what the side effects of these meds are? I'm taking Dilantin for a seizure disorder which has caused serious lasting side effects.
1054018 tn?1254614684 There is no medication that is going to take all the pain away the most you can hope for is to get enough relief to function. This is a common mistake from Pt's they expect to get full pain relief from medications and this rarely happens. No one that suffers from chronic pain gets full relief but enough to dull the pain to an acceptable level. Ho long have you been taking the vicoden and how much are you taking?
