Avatar m tn You can consume alcohol and spicy foods apart from your use of niacinfor example, having a glass of wine at 7 p.m. and then taking niacin at 9 p.m. Only a few people will have more flushing due to the combination.
1063764 tn?1272821064 I was watching a documentary and heard about a case where a woman was put on niacin supplements for depression. She was taking very large dosages, but it completely pulled her out of her depression. So far fluoxetine has helped me, but I think in time I will need a larger dosage. I would really rather not do that, so my question is: is it safe to take niacin supplements of 100 mg daily plus an extra multivitamin with 20mg. I don't want to end up taking too many vitamins.
Avatar f tn I've read conflicting articles saying that niacin is necessary for thyroid function and then some that say it can lower thyroid levels and cause liver damage. I've seen it in some iron supplements and wondered if I needed to stay away from it or if it would be good to take.
600301 tn?1219689156 Sorry to hear of your issues, I'm sure the doctors will provide you some very useful advice on how to go forward. 1135275 tn?1586565652 Niacin is toxic in too high a dose. Niacinamide isn't, and so that's usually used for mental health purposes, but it doesn't yield a lot of niacin. Niacin will also give you a hot flush on your skin, unless you buy a non-flush niacin, which is usually, again, niacinamide. Niacin is usually used for the heart.

Avatar n tn I just received the results of the Berkley Heart Profile. My father died of CAD at the age of 46. My mother had a coronary artery blockage that was repaired at age 75. I'm a 54 yr. old healthy female non smoker, low BP, 5'5''/128 lb.and live a healthy lifestyle (exercise and diet). My Lp(a) was 114, very high and a fibrinogen of 475. I also see that the LDL particles are primarily large. I plan on a stress test and obtaining a good cardiologist.
718651 tn?1237042917 I was thinking today of if taking niacin would make the opiate come out of your system faster... i've heard of people taking higher doses to get drugs out of their system to pass a UA.. has anyone tried this?? or do you think it will work??
Avatar f tn Thanks for your prompt reply. I take 50 mg. Trrazodone, for sleep. My only other medication is Maxzide. I am not intentionally taking a lot of niacin. My multi-vitamin lists 20 mg. As far as I know my diat does not include an unusually high amount of niacin. I do eat bran cereal and drink about 4 8-oz. glasses of milk a day.
Avatar m tn valve replacement 2001, redid bypasses. I was on 40mg Lipitor and 500mg no-flush niacin for a number of years with moderate sucess. I subscribe to the Cleveland Clinic Heart Newsletter. In the July 2007 issue there was suggestion that 1,500mg niacin was a good statin supplement. Starting in July 2007 I followed this suggestion, taking 1,500mg slow-release niacin with the Lipitor. I have biannual blood tests.
Avatar f tn Hi, I had a blood draw in April of 2009 and all of my numbers were perfect accept for my cholesterol was a little high. I was told from friends that Niacin helps as well as fish oil. So, over the past 8 mths I took 500 mg a day of Niacin and fish oil and my new blood draw came up with a perfect score in the cholesterol area but my Bilirubin total was elevated at 1.4, Iron UIBC low at 102, Iron serum high at 175 as well as Iron Saturation at 63, and my biggest concern was my TSH high at 5.08.
Avatar n tn I don't know if this helps you..but in layman's terms...niacin B3 is needed to create energy for metabolism. Are you having problems with weight gain or loss?
Avatar f tn His early work led to the use of niacin for schizophrenia and as an cholesterol treatment. Dr. Hoffer died in 2009 at the age of 91, but he successfully treated many thousands of patients with high dose niacin for psychotic disorders. He presented some very compelling evidence to support treating most psychotic disorders as a vitamin B3 deficiency.
Avatar f tn Did you have to fast for the 1 hour test? My dr told me to fast for 2 hours - also what are the normal ranges?
475570 tn?1280941363 I just want to add that this was a study of Niaspan - the time release version of Niacin - and not Niacin.
Tbd What is the purpose of the niacin and should a niacin supplement be administered if the medication does not contain niacin?
Avatar n tn com/viewarticle/458867_4 Regarding the issue of niacin lowering the cholesterol levels, Niacin or nicotinic acid lowers low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels while raising the high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels(good cholesterol). But this medication is not recommended to be taken by your own because you may miss some important side effects. Side effects include flushing, stomach upset, vomitings, headache, dizziness, liver damage in some cases.
Avatar m tn I'm 52 and have never have had high liver enzymes. Took 500 mg of Slo Niacin for about a month between 12/15/13 and 1/15/14 and ALT went from 36 to 60, AST from 39 to 63, and GGT from about low 30's to 110!! based on blood testing done 1/15/14. Previous normal liver bloodwork from chemistry profile was from physical back in late July of 2013. Only a social drinker (few beers on weekend).
Avatar f tn Hello, I have recently heard that Niacin is good for lowering cholesterol. Anyone have any experience with this?
Avatar n tn Thanks for your reply. I will check the ingred in the protein shake but this rash and reaction was not the same as the time I had the niacin "flush". I did go to the dermatologist and they suggested it was a piece of jewelry since it is localized to my neck and chest. They gave me a prescription for cortisone cream and it seems to be helping to lessen the redness and itching.

Avatar n tn I am bipolar and have taken niacin for years....I took 500mg of niacin the reagular kind not the no flush kind It did cause me to have a niacin flush (which is typical)...it has never caused me trouble with mainia only made me flush wich eased anxiety and caused me to be tired afterwards...It might affect others diffently though. Nician is a B vitamin and B vitmins can cause you to more energetic you shouldn't take them in excess esp if you have bipolar....
Avatar m tn For a good multi-vitamin, I consider the minimum to be at least 25 milligrams of each of the main Bs (B-1, B-2, B-6, e.g.). I also consider more to be better as far as the water-soluble vitamins go (the Bs, vitamin C, and some others are water-soluble, while A, D, E, and K are fat soluble). 'Bear in mind that the RDI (recommended daily intake), DV (daily value), or whatever, is calculated to be the dose that keeps you from overtly DYING of a nutrient deficiency.
Avatar f tn Niacin in most people causes the face to flush/blush. No flush Niacin is readily available OTC. A word of caution, however, Niacin is a B3 and B3's are known to elevate blood sugars. Test your bs often and on a regular basis.
Avatar n tn Hello dear and welcome to the medhelp forum. Niacin is usually prescribed for increasing the levels of HDL or the good cholesterol. It helps in protecting against the effects of atherosclerosis. It is available in many forms, fast acting and long lasting, over the counter and prescribed. There is a known incidence of facial flush with high doses. It could also cause headaches, dizziness and raised blood sugar. It is therefore prudent to take it under a physician’s prescription and supervision.
1495437 tn?1288798915 Hey, so Actually... I would recommend niacin to make them go away. Lol, sorry, reallly touchy subject. But it sounds like you took way too much the first time, If you take doses of 100mg and slowly build your way up you should be fine, I don't know who you got it from the first time, but It really doesn't sound like there was a lot of research done before.
