Avatar m tn My father is 85, suffering for 5 years from congestive heart failure (CHF) following two heart attacks 10 years ago. His condition has been treated to date by use of lasix diuretic. Two weeks ago, he gained water weight, and lasix did not work. The doctor prescribed Metolazone, a more powerful diuretic. This removed water, but from about 2 days after he started Metolazone, he began a downward spiral. He developed a potassium shortage, treated by a supplement.
Avatar m tn He came to live with us last June because his health was quickly declining. He has CHF, has suffered 9 small heart attacks, has type 2 diabetes, and stage 4 renal failure witha slew of other issues. He was admitted to ICU last Wed and came home Fri after suffering a small heart attack due to a virus that caused a CHF flare up.
Avatar f tn Get to your doctor today. Given that you have CHF it needs attention and investigation. This is a really serious weight gain and if its correct, it will need prompt attention to prevent further complications. The doctor has all the history of your condition and it may be you need a change or increase in meds fairly quickly.

Avatar n tn Hello I have a question, I have been diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy, Atrial Fib (AF), Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)and an Enlarged Heart back in 1998. at that time my (EF) Ejection fraction was well over 60%. I went to my Doctor the other day and found out that my (EF) is at 30 - 40% from a EKG/Echo cardiogram report that dated back to 07/19/2005 now three years have gone by and now I'm worried.
Avatar n tn My husband has had CHF for seven years. He has also had an ICD for those seven years. He lead a very active life until Feb of this year, but has been hospitalized 4 times due to water retention. The past three times he would be released from the hospital only to have to return in days. He has been on a lasix iv drip for almost 72 hours now and is finally feeling better and breathing well. My question is, how can he keep the water off at home? Lasix at home is not working well.
Avatar n tn I have cardiomyopathy and have a CRT-D and also have CHF, COPD, and lung nodules in both lungs. about 2 months ago I developed a 3rd beat with a pause, they said it was arrhythema and that the cardiomyopathy is progressing. My blood pressure goes up and down, up and down all the time, it doesnt stay long at the scarey blood pressures, but it does go there, and I feel horrible most all the time. Lately the lowest was 60/40 and the highest was 169/130. I have a horrible time at night.
Avatar f tn Dehydration can cause lethargy. Lethargy is generally not a symptom of CHF. CHF is most often the result of cardiomyopathy where the heart is unable to pump enough blood to tissues. That in turn can cause fluid retention around the heart and lungs. Excessive or prolonged sub-q fluids for a cat that already has CHF as a pre-existing condition could worsen the CHF, but it would not cause it. CHF cannot be diagnosed from an X-ray alone.
Avatar f tn t believe it would say right then and there a patient is in CHF. A patient with CHF has the symptoms of the disease and tests such as a BNP would diagnose that. People aren't in CHF 24/7 ; they have periods where they go into CHF; there are times when a patient who has been diagnosed with CHF may be doing well.
1132705 tn?1260482521 As a Telemetry RN in an acute care facility, I see frequent admissions and then subsequent readmissions (over and over) for exacerbation of CHF. Our hospital has core measures that we follow on every CHF patient in order to ensure an Echo has been done within the past 6 mos and if warrented a Rx for an ACE inhibitor. Despite this (along with tons of patient education) the readmsissions for CHF patients keep us busy.
Avatar m tn my daughter is 23 and has been in CHF for almost 4 years her lowest ef had been 32 and now it is 45 a very good indicator of CHF is a blood test called BNP, brain natriuretic peptide. This test is a very good indicator for CHF... check with your cardiologist what those levels were at the beginning and what they are now...
Avatar f tn Talk to me about CHF, is it controllable? Am on 80 mg lasix to rid body of water..also Zaroxolin...am unable to do much exercise due to back and knee problems...

Avatar m tn CHF means that the heart it is not able to supply the amount of blood that the body needs. CHF it is not a disease but a number of symptoms that can be produced for different diseases, therefore you can see drugs that are not specific for CHF but that can contribute to alleviate the symptoms, eg: diuretics.
Avatar f tn You need to see a cardiologist perferably with a chf speciality. I have had CHF for 9 yrs since a heart attack at age 36. Some days are better than others and my meds have been changed up over the years but I am still kicking. you can live with CHF your not dying but you need to listen to your doc and do your part to take care of your self.
323615 tn?1226193396 A 91-yr-old female patient with end-stage CHF has a BNP level of 1070. What does this mean to you?
Avatar f tn Most of these issues can be ueo to diabetes but would get a referral to a Cardiologist to be safe.
Avatar n tn he now has temp coverage but we are very confused about the life exspectancy of a CHF patient and if this this is permanent or will he get better, his temp doctor scheduled him an appt. three weeks away. and has also perscribed him metforman and laysix.
Avatar n tn My mom has CHF and her heart has a moderate EF and the doctor says that she should think about having a heart transplant. As scary as that sounds to her she is thinking about doing it. I want to ask if she doesent get it done than will she have a chance at living with heart for the next 5 years? And how secure is a Heart surgery..I am scared that she will not wake up and if so how well do people live after they have had a heart implant?
Avatar m tn s hereditary), congestive heart failure (CHF) as such is not hereditary. But many of the conditions that can lead to CHF run in families---like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation, etc. CHF can be acute or chronic. If it's severe enough, people can die from it, but many people live for years with CHF. My Dad was diagnosed with it in 2008 and he's 84 and still goes dancing. My Mom was first diagnosed with it in 2008, too.
Avatar n tn Hi, GERD patients may not go on to develop CHF. However, CHF patients are prone to GERD due to the use of the medications which can increase the acid production and reflux into the esophagus. It can also congestion in the stomach and GI tract predisposing the patient to gastric discomfort and acid reflux. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care.
Avatar f tn Hi, As per the symptoms described by you, the chances of her suffering from CHF are quite high. The standard treatment of CHF is to off-load the heart. This can be done in 2 ways. One, by decreasing the fluid overload which we call the preload and that’s done by the use of Lasix. Lasix ensures that the extra fluid in the circulation is passed in urine so that the work load of the heart is less.
