Avatar n tn During moderate/sever flare-ups I took prednisone orally, in foam suppository as well as mesalamine orally and through suppository. In moderate flare-ups mesalamine orally w/ mesalamine suppositories. My question is - beyond the general risk that HSV presents - how additionally risky is this for me? It is a possibility that at some point I will have a flare-up that will require immonusuppressive therapy. If I was to contract HSV could my UC symptoms become more severe?
Avatar n tn May I ask what disease you have. Is the drug you are referring to Sulfasalazine? Pfizer is a drug company so I am a little confused as to exactly what you are asking. If you give me a little more information I can better answer you. Hope to hear from you and welcome to the forum.
Avatar f tn Her gastroenterologist started her on Mesalamine (4 capsules daily) and later added prednisone 100 mg enemas to try and get the flare-up under control. Things are getting better and she has some of her strength back. There is one puzzling thing that the doctors are not able to pinpoint. This is an intermittent fever that starts in the afternoon and lasts to the night. In the morning the temperature is back to a low 97 degrees fahrenheit and stays stable until afternoon below 98 degrees.
1037767 tn?1262606784 I have been diagnosed with Inflammatory Spondyloarthropathy about a month ago and have been put on 2000mg of sulfasalazine. What im wondering is why I keep swelling up like a balloon??? Sometimes my fingers are so swollen I cant clench a fist!!! To be honest im not sure if its from the drugs or the spondyloarthropathy?????
Avatar n tn Aminosalicylates, drugs that contain 5-aminosalicyclic acid (5-ASA), help control inflammation. Sulfasalazine is a combination of sulfapyridine and 5-ASA. The sulfapyridine component carries the anti-inflammatory 5-ASA to the intestine. However, sulfapyridine may lead to side effects such as nausea, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea, and headache.
Avatar f tn My recent result of biopsy after the colonoscopy indicates epithelial dysplasia. My doctor just advice me to continue taking the mesalamine (Asacol) Do i need an another urgent medication/treatment for dysplasia? What should be my next move?
Avatar m tn My Rheumy, however, prescribed Plaquenil and Sulfasalazine and told me decrease the prednisone. After a week on those meds I felt worse than I've ever felt! Doc said to discontinue the Plaquenil because he thinks that that is the one that has the most side effects. It's been 3 days and I still feel awful! Please, If there is anybody out there that has experience with these drugs, let me know.
Avatar m tn I have ulcerative colitis I am taking 6 sulfasalazine colitis Medicean everyday. Can effect these medicine on window period. Plz help me.i will really appreciate.
Avatar f tn My 15 year old daughter has suddenly developed a rather severe bunion on her left foot, big toe. The rheumatalogist wants her to try sulfasalazine, because some tests and symptoms indicate jra, even though nothing is exactly conclusive. I know the podiatrist has been planning to operate on the toe, breaking bone and inserting screw into joint to stabilize. Yet, at one point, podiatrist also talked about getting inflammation down to point where daughter can wear shoe and bear weight again.
Avatar n tn It has now been 8 months of frequent bloody/mucousy stools and no relief. I have been on Asacol, Sulfasalazine, and most recently Lialda which I had a bad reaction to. Nothing has improved my symtoms. I recently started seeing a new GI and she retested me and I am positive for C diff. She also tested a ANCA-IBD P-ANCA Titer recently that came back negative.
Avatar f tn I took sulfasalazine for 6 months, about 12 months ago I stopped taking it due to remission of symptoms. Does anyone know whether taking this medication can have a lasting effect on the immune system. Any thoughts or advice?
Avatar m tn I have read about a study in which Boswellia was used in conjunction with Mesalamine. My gastroenterologist knows notheing about herbs, but is open to information that I can give her. What is available? Are there any interactions with boswellia and mesalamine that I should be cautious about? Are there any precastions about its use?
Avatar n tn Hi there, I was diagnosed with sigmoidal colitis in 2005, but I reckon that it went unchecked for about 4 years prior to that. I was initially treated with mesalamine (Asacol) but it had no effect. My GI guy then hit me with prednisone and that knocked it down. I have been on Asacol in a prophylactic capacity since (800mg tid). Does it keep me in remission. Maybe, but maybe it is the tremendous quantities of fentanyl, diacetylmorphine and morphine I abused as well for all I know :P.
Avatar n tn He still flares up every few months with bloody diarrhea which then we start up sulfasalazine 3 times a day which usually calms things down within a few days and after a week or 2 he's back on track. IBD is very frustrating to deal with because there's no cure it's just learning to manage what works best for your baby. The Prozyme you can get online cheap just search around but get a small bottle first to try out. They sell it at some Petco's too.
Avatar f tn What other symptoms are present? Mesalamine or Canasa suppositories works by preventing the production of substances that cause the inflammation of the colon. The usual side effects include diarrhea; dizziness; gas; hair loss; headache; mild stomach discomfort or pain; and nausea. The sour taste could be indirectly related especially if you have other gastrointestinal issues like acid peptic disease or gerd.
Avatar m tn I know it's been awhile since you posted this, so you've probably moved o. I just wanted t say for me I needed a supplemental DMARD to take with Enbrel. I ended up doing 1000 mg Sulfasalazine and that has made all the difference in the world. I've been flare free for going on four years now.
Avatar m tn The question arose with the treatment, because after 1 tablet of sulfasalazine and 1 tablet of metronidazole it became bad and bilirubin went beyond 100, and I have an average of 50-60. Are there any rational recommendations for my situation? Doctors offer homeopathy and microclysters with chamomile, I do not know how acceptable this is in this case. Thank you!
Avatar f tn The medication I am on is Sulfasalazine (been on this for over 3 years now) 500mg 2 twice a day, Tramadol 50mg 4 times a day and Amitriptyline 25mg 3 at night. In April I had injections in both knees. My new problem started early June this year, I stretched my right arm out and my arm went click (it just felt like my arm came out of its socket and I had to push it back in). From then on I have had nothing but problems with my shoulder and arm.
Avatar n tn There have been a few cases of liver failure possibly related to the use of mesalamine (the active ingredient in Asacol HD), but I haven't read anything about fatty liver as a side effect. A fatty liver, it takes between 6 months and 2 years to fully reverse. Dr Sandra Cabot's article "Fatty Liver - What Is Fatty Liver And How To Reverse It?
1012964 tn?1251819426 t need any of that now that I take sulfasalazine. I see that cath097 reports that sulfasalazine caused increased joint pain--I think I have experienced increased joint pain only when I resumed taking sulfasalazine after missing several days of doses. (Possibly, cath097 should have taken prednisolone for a month prior to beginning sulfasalazine as prescribed by my rheumatologist.) I will say that adjusting to sulfasalazine took a couple of months.
Avatar n tn They gave her one Steroid injection and started her on sulfasalazine (1gm per day). Her pain has gone, but she still can not walk. She feel weak and stiffness while walking. It is 6 weeks since her accident and 2 week since her medication started. I am concerned that will she ever be able to walk? What all she need to do to get well ASAP. Please guide. She is of Indian ethnicity and she is in London. Thanks.
Avatar f tn Hi everyone I am 46, asthmatic and have psoriatic arthritis. I use Seretide & Montelukast regularly for asthma and salbutamol when required. I was on combined sulfasalazine and methotrexate last year for arthitis but after 8 chest infections the sulfasalazine was stopped mid November as I was told that the combined effects of the two drugs can make you particularly prone to chest infections. I have now come down with another chest infection and am on antibiotics and steroids.
Avatar n tn Hello, A deficiency of certain nutrients, such as selenium, zinc and folic acid or Vitamin C, intake of antibiotics such as erythromycin, gentamicin and nitrofurantoin, sulfasalazine, cimetidine, spironolactone and methotrexate can decrease sperm count. The negative impact on sperm count stops once the medicine is no longer being taken. It is essential to have a healthy balanced diet everyday rich in all essential vitamins, minerals.
