Avatar f tn Her gastroenterologist started her on Mesalamine (4 capsules daily) and later added prednisone 100 mg enemas to try and get the flare-up under control. Things are getting better and she has some of her strength back. There is one puzzling thing that the doctors are not able to pinpoint. This is an intermittent fever that starts in the afternoon and lasts to the night. In the morning the temperature is back to a low 97 degrees fahrenheit and stays stable until afternoon below 98 degrees.
Avatar n tn During moderate/sever flare-ups I took prednisone orally, in foam suppository as well as mesalamine orally and through suppository. In moderate flare-ups mesalamine orally w/ mesalamine suppositories. My question is - beyond the general risk that HSV presents - how additionally risky is this for me? It is a possibility that at some point I will have a flare-up that will require immonusuppressive therapy. If I was to contract HSV could my UC symptoms become more severe?

Following oral administration, 20—30% of a dose is absorbed, with peak plasma concentrations achieved in 3—12 hours. However, if you are finding full undissolved tablets in your stool I would then suggest you contact your prescriber.

If you're having a flare up or the disease is not controlled well when you get pregnant it will likely get worse. In terms of medication I would trust your doctors here.

According to the mfg: "The dosage of Mesalamine 500 mg suppositories (Generic Canasa) is one rectal suppository once daily at bedtime. Avatar n tn 07-2007 - to help fight off inflammation. I've read that prescription drugs were often safe, way beyond the expiration date. Don't have much of it left though. So without going through the 'hassle' of getting an appointment, trying to get treatment, etc. is there something I can do on my own? Thank you.
Avatar n tn This all occurred after starting a 30 day course of Canasa (Mesalamine) to which I had rash and breathing problems in what seems to have been an allergic reaction and possibly triggered the above problems. I am now on Claritin (10mg), Lexapro (5mg) and Aciphex which together brought relief to stomach pain within hours. Cardiologist sees no Eosinophilic infiltration or Loeffler’s. Repeated Endoscopies show no problems. I am negative for Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis.
Avatar f tn the doctor at the time told me that it was the same thing as asacol, however, i found it to be less effective. another doctor later told me that they have the same active ingredient mesalamine, but pentasa reaches a different part of your track... i think asacol stays intact longer, so it gets released lower down in your system. anyway, i think either of the 2 drugs are mainly for maintenance like the others said.

I am very atypical apparently. I have never run a fever, and still had normal labsl and this held true again. I am so disheartened that this is happening again. I will be following up with my surgeon for a consult, and probably for a colonoscopy to R/O anything else going on. Thank-you for your response.
Avatar n tn Do you get cramping or spasms? Here is a list of meds. I have taken that has worked for me. Avatar n tn Why are carrots bad for UC? My 16 y/o son recently diagnosed with UC. He is on mesalamine and prednisone but keeps bleeding although stools are better. His diet at this point consists only of chicken, ground turkey, white rice, low fat tortillas and some cooked canned carrots and muscle milk drink plus water, gatorade and probiotics. He has a lot of severe food allergies which complicate diet. He is losing weight and he is an an athlete so this is disconcerting of course to him..
Avatar f tn s/Colitis patient to stop mesalamine? If it is something that you need, it is something that you need. Do not be put off by reading **** about "addiction". Really. God put the poppy on this earth for a reason. In all this chaotic randomess are we to believe that the alkaloids of this flower, their molecules bind perfectly with those receptors in our body that kill pain? I dunno. Honestly I am not terribly religious, but stuff like that gets me to wondering.
