asacol

Avatar f tn My recent result of biopsy after the colonoscopy indicates epithelial dysplasia. My doctor just advice me to continue taking the mesalamine (Asacol) Do i need an another urgent medication/treatment for dysplasia? What should be my next move?
Avatar n tn During moderate/sever flare-ups I took prednisone orally, in foam suppository as well as mesalamine orally and through suppository. In moderate flare-ups mesalamine orally w/ mesalamine suppositories. My question is - beyond the general risk that HSV presents - how additionally risky is this for me? It is a possibility that at some point I will have a flare-up that will require immonusuppressive therapy. If I was to contract HSV could my UC symptoms become more severe?
Avatar m tn I have read about a study in which Boswellia was used in conjunction with Mesalamine. My gastroenterologist knows notheing about herbs, but is open to information that I can give her. What is available? Are there any interactions with boswellia and mesalamine that I should be cautious about? Are there any precastions about its use?

Avatar n tn Hi there, I was diagnosed with sigmoidal colitis in 2005, but I reckon that it went unchecked for about 4 years prior to that. I was initially treated with mesalamine (Asacol) but it had no effect. My GI guy then hit me with prednisone and that knocked it down. I have been on Asacol in a prophylactic capacity since (800mg tid). Does it keep me in remission. Maybe, but maybe it is the tremendous quantities of fentanyl, diacetylmorphine and morphine I abused as well for all I know :P.
Avatar f tn Her gastroenterologist started her on Mesalamine (4 capsules daily) and later added prednisone 100 mg enemas to try and get the flare-up under control. Things are getting better and she has some of her strength back. There is one puzzling thing that the doctors are not able to pinpoint. This is an intermittent fever that starts in the afternoon and lasts to the night. In the morning the temperature is back to a low 97 degrees fahrenheit and stays stable until afternoon below 98 degrees.
Avatar f tn My husband is 41. Six years ago he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, and it extended from inside his rectum all the way up and around the first bend in his colon. He never took medication for it, because he's hardheaded - but he smokes, and the nicotine had kept him from ever having any flare-ups. Today he had a follow-up colonoscopy, and the doctor seemed very shocked to find that my husband has absolutely NO signs of ever having the ulcerative colitis.
Avatar f tn The cyclosporine I was taking was a powder in a capsule, apparently this has been taken off the market and instead I took the same medication, but it was in the form of a capsule with alcohol. Unfortunately, after a short time, I was right back to before treatment. And have been avoiding culprit foods ever since. I contacted my doctor and his guess was that the powder worked topically in the digestive system and the alcohol is metabolized by the liver and therefore does not work as well.
Avatar n tn There have been a few cases of liver failure possibly related to the use of mesalamine (the active ingredient in Asacol HD), but I haven't read anything about fatty liver as a side effect. A fatty liver, it takes between 6 months and 2 years to fully reverse. Dr Sandra Cabot's article "Fatty Liver - What Is Fatty Liver And How To Reverse It?
Avatar n tn (I went to an emergency 2 out of 3 times, got treated but always stopped taking the medication after a while, and was always fine afterwards). I suffered the same thing 3 times over the last 4-5 years, always the same pattern. I never had any flare ups other than after one of these these binges. The last time I saw a gastro-enterologist, in 2006, he told me that there was no evidence that food could trigger a UC flare up..
Avatar m tn Hello all UC Patients, I was diagnosed with UC few years back and tried every medication (ASA, Rowasa Enema, Prednisone, Immuno-Suppresants, Remicade, VSL-3, etc). I have been hospitalized four times in last two years. Finally I met a doctor in UK who prescribed Asacol Foam Enema. I was unable to get into remission for last so many years with all drugs, however, with this foam enema, I got in full remission in just few weeks.
Avatar m tn She again had colonoscopy and histological examination inferred that it was ulcer. She is being treated with Mesalamine and now she is well. Please check with your doctor.
Avatar f tn If your spine doctor has diagnosed you with a condition whose pain warrants giving you fentanyl patches, surely you are in need of this medication. I would call your doctor immediately and ask for an alternate medication to deal with your pain. Persistent pain is a common condition that is both disabling and costly, yet it is often managed inadequately.
Avatar f tn If it is not effective, then other medications like steroids, mesalamine and bismuth subsalicylate may be tried. ================================================================ The information provided is for patients’ education only and is not a medical advice. Avatar f tn Hi, I am 23 years old and am currently in a flare up that started back in November 2009. I have tried Mesalamine, Prednisone, 6MP, Remicade, and am currently taking Humira and Methotrexate once a week. I feel like my life has been taken away from me. I was studying abroad for a master's degree when the flare up set in and decided to fly home to my parents to get proper health care and support.
Avatar f tn Hi Nicky. I'm sorry about your recent U.C. diagnosis. According to the mfg: "The dosage of Mesalamine 500 mg suppositories (Generic Canasa) is one rectal suppository once daily at bedtime. The suppository should remain inserted for one to three hours or longer, if possible. The normal course of therapy is from three to six weeks depending on symptoms and sigmoidoscopic findings". So the 30 day supply falls within the recommended duration.
Avatar n tn This all occurred after starting a 30 day course of Canasa (Mesalamine) to which I had rash and breathing problems in what seems to have been an allergic reaction and possibly triggered the above problems. I am now on Claritin (10mg), Lexapro (5mg) and Aciphex which together brought relief to stomach pain within hours. Cardiologist sees no Eosinophilic infiltration or Loeffler’s. Repeated Endoscopies show no problems. I am negative for Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis.
Avatar n tn Thanks for the replies. I don't have a gastro, just a general practitioner. I'm in a small town without any specialists. I'll be moving soon into a larger city where I'm hoping to find a specialist to work with. I'm 24; never had a colonoscopy before. I didn't know there was a blood test for IBD, so that sounds like a good way to start. What would I do if I have IBD? Is there medication for it, or would I need a change of diet or something like that?
Avatar f tn the doctor at the time told me that it was the same thing as asacol, however, i found it to be less effective. another doctor later told me that they have the same active ingredient mesalamine, but pentasa reaches a different part of your track... i think asacol stays intact longer, so it gets released lower down in your system. anyway, i think either of the 2 drugs are mainly for maintenance like the others said.
Avatar f tn Ask your doctor before taking ANY medication.
