1538507 tn?1293114589 One year ago I had a sigmoid colectomy due to diverticulitis and adhesions. I also had an acute perforation and acute peritonitis. Although my recovery was not an easy one, for the past few months, I have been doing fine. Bowels have still remained much like IBS- with diarrhea and alternating constipation. BUT, 4 days ago, I began having acute pain in the LLQ again. This time, no nausea, or diarrhea. Immediately went on clear liquids to rest my colon. Could not get in to see my gastro.
Avatar n tn During moderate/sever flare-ups I took prednisone orally, in foam suppository as well as mesalamine orally and through suppository. In moderate flare-ups mesalamine orally w/ mesalamine suppositories. My question is - beyond the general risk that HSV presents - how additionally risky is this for me? It is a possibility that at some point I will have a flare-up that will require immonusuppressive therapy. If I was to contract HSV could my UC symptoms become more severe?
Avatar m tn You may want to check out the use of delayed release mesalamine to help control the diverticulitis. There's a new study out that suggests it may be of help in this condition.
Avatar f tn Her gastroenterologist started her on Mesalamine (4 capsules daily) and later added prednisone 100 mg enemas to try and get the flare-up under control. Things are getting better and she has some of her strength back. There is one puzzling thing that the doctors are not able to pinpoint. This is an intermittent fever that starts in the afternoon and lasts to the night. In the morning the temperature is back to a low 97 degrees fahrenheit and stays stable until afternoon below 98 degrees.
Avatar f tn My recent result of biopsy after the colonoscopy indicates epithelial dysplasia. My doctor just advice me to continue taking the mesalamine (Asacol) Do i need an another urgent medication/treatment for dysplasia? What should be my next move?
Avatar m tn I have read about a study in which Boswellia was used in conjunction with Mesalamine. My gastroenterologist knows notheing about herbs, but is open to information that I can give her. What is available? Are there any interactions with boswellia and mesalamine that I should be cautious about? Are there any precastions about its use?
Avatar n tn my nephew had emergency surgery last thurs for perforated bowel due to diverticulitis. He is 26, did now know he had a problem. He is off the NG tube, but suffering with severe nausea. He is passing waste through the bag.
Avatar n tn Hi there, I was diagnosed with sigmoidal colitis in 2005, but I reckon that it went unchecked for about 4 years prior to that. I was initially treated with mesalamine (Asacol) but it had no effect. My GI guy then hit me with prednisone and that knocked it down. I have been on Asacol in a prophylactic capacity since (800mg tid). Does it keep me in remission. Maybe, but maybe it is the tremendous quantities of fentanyl, diacetylmorphine and morphine I abused as well for all I know :P.
Avatar f tn What other symptoms are present? Mesalamine or Canasa suppositories works by preventing the production of substances that cause the inflammation of the colon. The usual side effects include diarrhea; dizziness; gas; hair loss; headache; mild stomach discomfort or pain; and nausea. The sour taste could be indirectly related especially if you have other gastrointestinal issues like acid peptic disease or gerd.
Avatar f tn I have had a total of 10 diverticulitis attacks since 2006, of which 7 have been in the last 2 years, and 3 in the last month an a half. I had 10 days of Flagyl and Levaquin beginning March 15, then 10 days beginning April 15, and I'm starting a 14 day dose today. My sed rate was 80 but WBC is normal. Scans in March and April showed mild diverticulitis. Is this normal to continue to have to take these anti biotics? It seems to me that they must not be working for my infection.
Avatar f tn Hi, I am new to this site. I've coped with diverticulitis for a few years now, living with the pain and its limitations. Now I've hit a wall and my G.P. has signed me off work. Can't believe how poorly I feel and the pain is constant. Having tests to eliminate anything sinister. Thing is I never lose time from work and have had 3 weeks off so far which is worrying me. At times I think I should just battle thru but know I need help so I just feel like I am going mad.
Avatar f tn Both is possible at your age. It's true that diverticulitis is more common in old people, but some young people reported diverticulitis on this forum already. Colitis (ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease) actually typical apears in young people around their twenties.
Avatar f tn I had a colonoscopy on June 18th and was told some polyps were removed but everything else was fine. Imagine my surprise to have to be admitted to the hospital on July 17th with severe lower right abdominal pain. "Diverticulitis". After 3 days of IV antibiotics I still feel really weak and have pain. My question is, how long does this take to develop and how long till it goes away?
Avatar n tn I was finally told this weekend that I have Diverticulitis/colitis. For months, I have been searching for answers to what is wrong. The pain was finally so severe that I went to the ER thinking I had appendicitis. After a Ct scan with contrast, I was finally diagnosised. I have not had a colonoscopy. I am guessing this would be my next step? I have had back pain that feels like a kidney infection for a year. I had been tested for it and even kidney stones and was neg.
Avatar m tn I have had several spells of diverticulitis since spring. The last spell put me in the e.r. because the pains were so severe. I had a colonoscopy and the gastroenterologist suggested I might have food allergies. He said if I have two more spells of severe pain I should see about getting part of my colon removed. Would getting part of my colon removed help if it is food allergies instead of diverticulitis?
945921 tn?1330962317 i had surgery 5 weeks ago and my colon had attached itself to my diverticulitis and i am still in pain from the surgery. the surgeon had to cut me instead of doing the laparoscopy. i am not in pain near the scar. just pain. i was wondering if this was normal. when will i stop hurting?
Avatar f tn Is there anyone that has continual problems from a diverticulitis attack? I was diagnoised 11/30/10. I have good days but then this old thing comes back to bite me.
987242 tn?1335490770 I under went a colonoscopy on Thursday and they found inflammation and diverticulitis in the sigmoid colon. He also found something at the other end of my colon and is awaiting biopsy results. What I don't understand is my symptoms don't match diverticulitis and have been on going for over a decade. In 2001 I started having bloody bowel movements with extreme abdominal pain, I also lost forty pounds in six months.
Avatar f tn diagnosed with diverticulitis, have been on antibiotics for 24 days, off for the last 24hrs and the pain had returned along with several bowel movements, also been on a low fiber diet.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with diverticulitis when I was a very young child;had a "lump" in my left lower abdomen. At first they thought it was a "Wilmes Tumor" (a form of fatal kidney cancer I think). Spent about 5 days in hospital and had to take a horrible tasting med with sulfer in it ( I think). Details are fuzzy as I was so young.
Avatar m tn The second time it was the diverticulitis plus a pneumonia in one lung. The third time it was diverticulitis plus pneumonia in both lungs. Each time my fever was above 105, so high that I don't even remember going to the ER. The last time I went to the ER, they told me that the infection was getting worse each time and that I eventually would not leave the hospital alive. Of course thats a scary proposition but I have no idea what to do about it. Now I'm in constant fear of death.
Avatar m tn Patients with diverticulitis will usually have elevated WBC, although patients with early and/or mild diverticulitis may have a normal WBC count. This result may also be blunted in the elderly or immunocompromised.
Avatar n tn There have been a few cases of liver failure possibly related to the use of mesalamine (the active ingredient in Asacol HD), but I haven't read anything about fatty liver as a side effect. A fatty liver, it takes between 6 months and 2 years to fully reverse. Dr Sandra Cabot's article "Fatty Liver - What Is Fatty Liver And How To Reverse It?
