Avatar f tn My old psysician did tell me about the weight gain with paxil so I could not do it, I tried but my anxiety was so high about the weight gain.. Its your choice and you really don't know which was is going to be the best for you but my advice would be to listen to your doctor. If that doesn't work then you can always try something else. I am in the process to switching to Lexapro and I am discouraged because i'm also very tired, your body doesn't get used to it?
Avatar n tn First I took Lexapro then Cymbalta and now Zoloft. My doctor keeps changing my meds because of the weight gain and every change only makes it worse. This latest change has caused me to gain about a pound a day. Since Thursday I have gained three more pounds and have been eating next to nothing. I finally convinced my doctor that I am not pigging out all day and she ha ordered a thyroid test. I'm so scared that I'm going to die from this, it's uncontrollable.
Avatar n tn Yes, Prozac i got off of ie; weight gain! Wellbutrin I loved b/c i lost weight on it and hence i was happier but in turn over time you revert back and eventually gain and really messes with your mind because you remember how you looked when you started the Welllbutrin. When i was you and started Wellbutrin i'd almost want to raise the dose just to keep loosing weight that had eventually cought up well, i was taking 750 mg and my Dr. then adds Lexapro and Adderall.
Avatar n tn the weight gain with effexor and then even more so with lexapro. I was on effexor for approx a year+, then on lexapro for only 3months...I started to gain weight and it's taken me 7 months after not taking any of the meds to lose 7 pounds. I've always been obsessive with excercise and dieting, yet none of this has helped....soooo frustrating. I just got back on prozac and the weight is starting to drop...
Avatar n tn if I can be switched to Wellbutrin, what do you all think about that change? I have no serious side effects other than the weight gain on Lexapro, however, the weight gain is making me feel worse than I did when I started the medication.
Avatar n tn I switched from Lexapro to Wellbutrin because of weight gain and high blood pressure and have had wonderful results. Blood pressure is normal again and I have lost weight. Hopefully this medication will work for you too..
Avatar n tn I am now off the effexor and just on the wellbutrine, but the weight is not stopping at all. I have put on 31 lbs. since October when my weight hadn't change more than 10 lbs. in 6 years. I have also put it 0n so quickly (20 lbs in the first month) that my skin is so tight and hasn't really been able to stretch as much as it needs to to accomodate the increased weight.
Avatar n tn Why the weight gain on these anit d's is it because you are so relaxed? Does Prozac have the same effect? I know 3 people on Prozac and they are skinny......I don't want to gain weight.
Avatar f tn I had a great experience with Zoloft about 2 years ago but back then I didn't know about the side effects so I didn't look for them at all. I gained alot of weight with the Zoloft so of course I don't want to gain anymore but supposedly this is good for that as well. I'm about 95% sure I will start tonight so in keeping with a positive attitude, I will post in a few weeks to let everyone of my "great experience with minimal side effects if any"!!! Best of luck to everyone.
Avatar n tn Most ADs cause weight gain. Wellbutrin usually does not. But, wellbutrin can exacerbate anxiety. Effexor affects people differently. It makes some people tired, makes others more energetic. You can decide for yourself whether your depression is caused by environmental factors, or whether it is "endogenous" or coming from within. I do not believe there have been long term studies on SSRIs, but the patents on some ssris (paxil, prozac) are expired, so they are available as generics.
Avatar f tn i have been switched around from depakote, depakote er, trileptal, and lexapro in the past 5 years. I didn't experience any weight gain from any medication, but i did lose weight with lexapro. I had a lack of appetite for about 3 weeks until i adjusted to the medicine. i lost a total of 8 lbs and was very weak and "dumbed down" for the first 2 weeks. after my levels were okay i gained my weight back and haven't had a problem since.
Avatar n tn I gained 40 pounds while taking Zoloft and yet I can't cope without some sort of medication nor can I cope with this weight gain. I have always prided myself in looking nice. I have just switched to Wellbutrin XL because I heard it doesn't cause that weight gain that Zoloft does... Can someone pleae tell me if they have gone through this and what I should expect?
Avatar f tn I googled last night and read that Paxil is one that doesn't (usually) accelerate tremors but I read weight gain is ridiculous on it. I also read the Prozac is good too but I think Prozac is activating. I need sedating. I am glad you said that about Cymbalta. I need one that will not make my tremors worse. kickbutt, My doctor wanted to orginally prescribe Lexapro but coming to find out my insurance doesn't cover it. I don't understand why because I have decent insurance.
Avatar m tn They was like candy for me in the past, no side-effects like increase anxiety but MAJOR weight gain... they lead to my morbid obesity problem and that's because of the Paxil that I had the gastric by-pass surgery to loose some weight... Ok, I was a fat kid already before the Paxil and drinking a glass of water was making me gaining 2 pounds... but the SSRI's didn't help me... My first med I try for my anxiety was the Buspar, it was new at the time in 1994...
Avatar n tn I am now 35, 3 children and when i was diagnosed manic-depressive i was on prozac, wellbutrin and taking hi levels of prescription weight loss pills. I was losing my mind but i wasn't losing any weight! When my Psychatrist decided to try me on Topamax it was because of my anieity over my weight gain with the standard mood stabilizers. Within these past two years I have lost 38 pounds taking this medicine.
Avatar n tn ) I went off Paxil due to frustration over 1) somnolence (sleeping good part of weekend days away), 2) asthenia (the 5 mile run I'd done for years became a difficult chore), 3) lessened motivation (one of the good parts of anxiety, I guess), 4) sexual dysfunction and 5) weight gain (5 side-effects in one patient--not bad, eh?) Withdrawl symptoms were unpleasant but not near as crippling as I've read about (mostly brain zaps).
881463 tn?1245349249 for example paroxetine causes sedation and weight gain, and prozac causes activation and a bit of weight loss. Citalopram is weight and sleep neutral in most people. All SSRIs and SNRIs have sexual side effects, EXCEPT perhaps Pristiq, a new SNRI that has very low incidence of sexual side effects in the one or two trials that have been done with the medication.
Avatar m tn It made me somewhat mellow, but that's about it. Oh, and weight gain. I heard Zoloft is the most prescribed SSRI, and a recent study of all 12 major anti-depressants concluded that Zoloft was most effective. Does Zoloft cause weight gain? I already take Wellbutrin because a) it has helped me quit smoking cigarettes, and b) helps control my appetite, and c) there aren't sexual side-effects.
415867 tn?1323369103 Newer antidepressants don’t have the same side effect. While Paxil and Zoloft do cause some weight gain, other SSRIs, like Prozac, Celexa and Lexapro, don’t. For Paxil and Zoloft, the weight gain can add up to five to 40 pounds a year. Some people do experience weight gain with Lexapro or Celexa, but most don’t. In this case, it is not a surprise to have idiosyncratic responses, since the chemical structure of all the SSRIs is so similar.
347630 tn?1196374698 I find it quite interesting as they claim that the GABA ones are associated with weight gain whether the antiglutamatergic ones with weight loss. A lot of patients are concerned with weight gain so I think this is something to look forward to. Anyway, I was wondering if every medications acts on different neurotransmitter how do you know what type of neurotransitter is the most appropriate to be altered? Is Lamictal antiglutamatergic?
Avatar f tn Hensley's post offers you a wonderful choice, too, so you can discuss both of these with your pdoc. The drawback to Remeron - appetite increases, weight gain - you have to climb on the scale constantly to ensure that the lbs. don't pack on, and can sometimes be too sedating. But, very effective in helping with sleep, too. I currently take 30 mg. - I didn't like a higher dose, as my pdoc tried to increase it. This dosage is about right for most patients.
Avatar f tn I'm on a drug in the mood stabilizer class, and it's said to cause weight gain the same as SSRI's, but I've lost weight - I rarely have serious cravings because I don't "emotional eat" now. I found a great link about facts vs. fiction on anti-depresants, it's great! http://www.heretohelp.bc.ca/publications/visions/medications/bck/web/2 This is a good article I found, which is extemely credible, it's been published in The Lancet, which is one of the leading medical journals.
737515 tn?1252556023 Prozac does seem to have the least chance of the ssris for weight gain. With the tricyclics weight gain is rarer, though it can happen, but then there are other side effects such as dry mouth and constipation. Look, these meds are affecting your brain, they're all going to have some side effects. The question is whether they do more for you than against you. And you're only 23, you're metabolism isn't slowing down that much yet unless you don't exercise.
Avatar n tn Many people don't gain weight and instead they loose so try not to worry to much. If you start to gain weight and you are having problems you can change your meds, you have lots of options. If you are able to loose 20lbs (great job!) on your own surely you will beable to keep yourself from gaining too.
Avatar f tn Ive recently changed from Prozac to Lexapro (today). Ive researched all the online websites about weight gain and weight loss in Anti-Ds and they all have different opinions. Lexapro is supposed to decrease appetite which Im assuming would cause weight loss. Yet reading other peoples experiences they say they put on between 5-20lbs whilt using them. Are you aware of any that work without causing weight gain? I cannot get Wellbutrin in Australia, my Dr never heard of it.
Avatar n tn My husband will be going on antidepessants and I would like comments on Lexapro and Lexapro vs Effexor Xr. All comments are heplful. Thank you!
Avatar m tn I agree with Venora. Lithium did no good for me -- caused me to gain a lot of weight, it gave me a horrible red and itchy rash, I was exhausted all the time -- I had my doc take me off it and will never take it again! Now on Lamictal and Lexapro and it seems to be working for me.
Avatar n tn but I dont want to get off of it cause to me it is better than antidepressant eventho the antidepressant lexapro helped alot with my anxiety but caused me weight gain....but I've been told that tapering VERY slowly is the key.....take your time to do it....it is not a race.....maybe getting liquid klonopin would be better for the tapering....ask your dr about it....or switching to valium too is better....and i heard too that adding a small amount of prozac can help ease the withdrawals....
135456 tn?1301441224 For example, if you have a very difficult time maintaining weight on treatment, then look for an AD associated with weight gain. Conversly, if you have a hard time losing weight, look for another AD. I wasn't seeing anyone on tx, so the benefit of no sexual side effects from Wellbutrin would have been lost. There's a really good site on ADs that someone here once recommended. If I can remember it, I'll post later.
