letrozole or clomid

Hi! Doctors will prescribe either clomid or letrozole to assist with ovulation. There's two main differences: it doesn't have anti-estrogenic side effects like clomid; and although studies have proven letrozole is an effective fertility drug it hasn't been approved by the FDA yet for fertility use, thus isn't covered by insurance (beware it's very expensive). Letrozole was developed to treat estrogen-sensitive breast cancers.

I was on Clomid but asked my RE about Letrozole because I have a friend who got pregnant twice on second round of IUI with Letrozole. RE said it was merely doctor preference. My RE has higher success rates with clomid so that's what he prescribes, but his partner in the same clinic uses Letrozole almost exclusively. I'm sure that wasn't very helpful... but thought I'd share.

well i recieved my negative beta today and they want me to do a cycle of letrozole or femara which is an oral pill simliar to clomid.. my question is has anyone ever tried this med before, any side effects and any success..

I finally broke down after 26 mo of TTC, 8 clomid cycles, 2 IUIs and trigger shots and went to the RE for advice. After AF shows in 2 weeks or so - we will start on letrozole with CD3 blood work and U/S and then do another IUI. If that is unsuccessful - we will do IVF. Has anyone done letrozole vs clomid? side affects? BFPs?

s syndrome, and alot of ladies on there use fermara instead of clomid because clomid can thin the uterine lining. They all say that fermara helps with the lining and several have had success using it. Good LUck!! I am thinking of you and praying you get your BFP soon!!!!

I was on clomid for two cycles and had the same issue with thin lining..I was put on Letrozole for the next cycle..haven't been successful yet but I did not get so many side effects.. I definitely have heard from a lot of people about Letrozole not thinning the lining..

m sure your day is coming soon! =) It does make more sense to take Letrozole over Clomid, I just pray it works because I'm turning 36 this month and really don't want to wait much longer. I know this day and age women are having children at all ages, I personally just do not want to wait too long. Thank you for giving me hope.

Ok took Clomid for 4 months ovulated 2 times on 50mgs third month no ovulation. Fourth month increased to 100mgs and no bfp but had horrible side effects on the increased dose. This month she put me on femara just wondering if people had some success using it?

My husband and I have been trying for almost 1 year. I was on Clomid for 6 months and last cycle switched to Letrozole. Now my period is 4 days late and 2 pregnancy tests say NEGATIVE - this is killing me! My OB has told me I will have to take progesterone to bring on my period. What is a good way to thicken the uterine lining. My lining my last two cycles have been 7mm then 5mm. I was on clomid both times, and my RE has switched me to Letrozole. I'm going on vacation this month so won't start a cycle till October. I heard baby aspirin will help, but not sure if this is safe.

Hello, has anyone not had much success with clomid to help ovulation so tried a different drug i.e letrozole(femura) instead.

Of course the dose you take for fertility purposes is much lower compared to taking it for breast cancer. I did a little research on my own and found that Letrozole is actually much safer than clomid. I've been on letrozole for three months now, and I don't have any of the side effect I had with clomid. I have had good and healthy ovulation since I started taking it. Good luck and baby dust to you!

Thank you so much for the response. At this time my endometriosis is confined to my right ovary only with no growth in over a year. I have been seeing a fertility dr and just recently switched to a new one who will be monitoring me better. I had some crazy emotional side effects with clomid so I'm hoping I won't with femara. Also, I did not take metformin with clomid so I'm hoping that will help.

4/12, had HSG (no blockage) no Clomid...BFN. 5/12, round 1 of 2.5mg Letrozole my progesterone level 9...waiting on Day 1 of cycle to see if I'm prego. It seems like I'm OV, so whats some of reasons for BFN or what are some other thigns to try?

Usually REs will start you out on clomid or letrozole. If they don't work they move you on to injectibles (which are basically LH and/or FSH) such as menopur, follistim, gonal-f, bravelle, etc. Just depends what your RE prefers to use and what is right for your situation.

Ok, so, doc doubled my Letrozole this cycle and for first time had more than one follicle growing so had hope this time..a little history, I have PCOS and Agressive Endometriosis. 2 failed IUI's so far with letrozole and HCG inj. Before that, Clomid for 9 months with no success. So this time again, follicles on the left stopped growing at 14mm, and the one on the right was 24mm today but was a anuovulated.. Yes, my doctor gave me the choice of letrozole or clomid. I chose letrozole because I didn't want the mood swings or the thinning of the lining. It seems to have helped. 1st round I got an LH surge on Day 16 with 8 days of bleeding, 2nd round a 28 day cycle with 6 days of bleeding but the bleeding was copious and abnormally large amounts of blood and tissue like excretions with an LH surge on Day 13.

Maybe you are thinking of Femara (letrozole)?? This is also used to treat breast cancer and to induce ovulation in fertility patients instead of clomid. I read many scientific articles regarding femara before I decided to try it. It does work and worked for me on the first cycle. I know others who it also worked for. If you are looking for an alternative to clomid it is something you may want to investigate bfore moving on to injectibles.

I tested at 5dpo in got a faint positive but it's best to test around 12dpo or 13dpo or just wait till your missed period

I had my 1st appt with an RE today. He wants to do a superovulation / IUI with Letrozole. I am to take 2 - 2.5mg tablets days 3 - 7. After reading up on this, it is the same thing as Femara right? Has anyone taken this med and does it actually work alone? My other ? is, he said that we can try this for 3 - 4 cycles, but after that we have to think about IVF?? The only things that I have tried in the past are 4 cycles of clomid and 1 IUI. Why would he skip injectables??

ANY OF YOU LADIES ON CLOMID AND IT SHORTEN UR PERIOD BECAUSE IM ON CLOMID 50MG THIS MY 3ROUND AND IT SHORTEN MY PERIOD FROM 3DAY TO 2 SINCE I BEEN ON CLOMID ON OCTOBER. I HOPE THAT DONT BE A PROBLEM PLUS I DRINK FERTILE.
