Lantus regimen

Common Questions and Answers about Lantus regimen

lantus

Avatar n tn m 19 been diabetic since I was 4 and and I have gained 15-20 pounds with my new insulin regimen started about 6 months ago.I take humalog on sliding scale 1 unit per 10 carbs and I take it every time I eat and I also take 50 units of lantus at bed time.So my question is can this be causing my weight gain? I think the lantus initially caused me to gain about 20lbs. to begin with 6yrs. ago and I'm now over weight.I'm on my feet constantly at work 9 hrs.
Avatar f tn I started on insulin recently (Type II) and began with just one dose of Lantus first thing in the morning. My doctor is not yet sure if that will be sufficient (it would be nice!). But he mentioned if not then I will take a short acting type two hours AFTER my meals only if my blood sugar is high. I'm confused because everyone I talk to and everything I read refers to taking short acting BEFORE meals (t hold the blood sugar in control as food is absorbed).
Avatar f tn Is she on a basal/bolus regimen or just on the basal (Lantus). You say she is having trouble adjusting doses. What was she on before and what were the results? If she is experiencing lows or highs in her fasting and in between meals and bedtime than I would adjust the Lantus accordingly up or down. Always adjust a very small amount initially and see how that works for a couple days.
Avatar n tn sugars between 250-280 daily on metformin glipizide junvia seen doc she put me on lantus 10u did nothing went up to 15u still noting been a few days does it take a while to take effect how much can you take ,also asked to see specialst she said she could do it should i insist to see one?
Avatar n tn My inclination would be to ask you what type of insulin you are on? What is your regimen?
Avatar n tn So imediject has a valid point if you are taking Lantus in the morning. Many diabetics split their doses of Lantus and take some at night and some first thing in the morning so that peaking is minimal (for some of us, there IS a slight peak about 4 hours after injection) and the petering out of it as it wears off is also minimal.
Avatar n tn And as for the sweats about a half hour after taking Lantus, there IS a slight peak action with Lantus, although this peak action for most people is several hours after taking the Lantus. In my case, I usually take my Lantus at about 6 am, and I notice a peak that causes my glucose levels to drop by about 8 am. This happens even if I have not taken any Novolog or eaten breakfast (sometimes I wait until I get to work to take Novolog and eat breakfast), so it has to be the Lantus peaking.
Avatar n tn 17 yrs? and now your asking? You R Serious, right? Go ahead take just the Lantus and test every couple of hours after and of course before meals and see what happens.. and I surely Hope you got the book > Think Like a Pancrease my friend..
Avatar n tn I am not a phycan, but i would highly suggest that you dcusss this change with your endocronolgist as you might have to do this over several days as lantus is a 24 hr insurlin. The other is that lantus really doies not have a peak so it should not effect your luch time injuection.
1367276 tn?1278801812 The doctor had me take 5 units of novolog 3 times a day with 1 unit for every 50 points above 150, and then I take 15 units of Lantus at bedtime. For the past 3 days I have been checking my levels 6 to 7 times a day and they have been between 167 and 297 and I can't seem to get them below. What can I do without taking more insulin?
Avatar f tn I would also never every recommend that he do something that would violate CFR regulations by concealing the fact he is taking Lantus with an insulin syringe. My own opinion is that use of Lantus together with Metformin, together with exercise and tight dietary control (and I mean tight) would not unduly hazard the general public.
Avatar n tn I have read about folks taking their Lantus shot in the morning or at night or a partial dose at each time. If you were taking the Lantus in the morning and "crashing" overnight, then talk to your doc about taking it at night instead -- then the timing of any drops would be while you're wide awake and able to test & treat. If you had been taking it at night (which is what I'm guessing, given the timing of your "drop"), then shift to the morning.
Avatar m tn exercise is restricted due to 1 1/2 in differential between leg lengths. metformin intake is 850 X 3 daily and 35u of lantus. numbers at testing run 180+. can get it down to 120 - 160 during the day. overnight 125 went down to below 80 and i awoke in sweats and so dizzy i had to eat. All this in an attempt to manage my glucose levels and have an A1C below 7. I don't get what I'm measuring and exactly how what I eat, when I eat it affects my level. Any suggestions?
Avatar m tn I am on 500 metformins twice a day and 40 units of Lantus. When my sugar is really high I will take one extra metformin. Is this okay ?
Avatar n tn Type 1 for 40 years, good control but disagree with the constant increase in Lantus she adds every visit) Too many lows, not associated with Humalog, then too many rebounds after eating. I have almost perfect days when I slightly reduce the Lantus she prescribes. It's very frustrating, and she thinks this would be a good thing.
1091845 tn?1263162000 Your blood sugar of 4.0 (72) is not considered low, but your 2.8 (50) is. Hypoglycemia is usually caused by too much insulin, too little carbs or a combination of the two. You don't say anything about your insulin regimen. Are you on a basal/bolus regimen? How do you determine your bolus (pre-mea) dose? The best way is by finding out what your insulin:carb ratio is so that you gear your dose to what you plan to eat.
Avatar f tn The basal/bolus regimen of a long acting insulin (Lantus) and a short-acting insulin before meals is the absolute best way to treat your high blood sugar. You are doing better, but your blood sugar is still much too high and you are at risk for complications. Why do you feel so negative about insulin? The basal/bolus system mimics what non-diabetics bodies do naturally: a small amount of background insulin 24/7 and then a burst of bolus insulin for your meals. It is certainly what you need.
Avatar f tn The most effective and up to date diabetes regimen is a long acting basal insulin such as lantus or levimir either once or twice daily and a rapid acting bolus before each meal, dose determined by an insulin:carb ratio so that the dose is covering what you are actually eating. I would ask for a referral to an endo as your doctors don't seem to be up to date on treatment.
Avatar n tn m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Has he ever considered changing his insulin regimen? NPH and regular Humilin are older therapies. Something like Lantus or Levemir as the long acting and something like Novolog or another fast acting insulin are much more common these days. They give more consistent coverage with fewer spikes. Does he have hypoglycemia unawareness? If he's getting down to 19, it sounds like he may.
Avatar n tn Oldstuff, Logan would have produced some of his own insulin for some time after being diagnosed. This can go on for years. And it is probably why he was able to achieve good control with supplemental insulin. At this stage, he must be totally dependent on injected insulin. Which makes controlling blood sugar levels a lot more difficult. And it calls for a regimen that gives Logan more control. Biphasic and Regular insulin simply doesn't do that.
Avatar n tn Hello, My 3-1/2 yr old son was recently hospitalized because of vomiting due to a gastrointestinal virus of some kind. He's ok now and at home and past all the virus symptoms. We've been slowly increasing his insulin dosages while his body gets used to properly digesting food, but, now that we're back to normal insulin dosages, he's still exhibiting very high levels after breakfast and into lunch (approx 24-27 mmol/L or 430-480 mg/dL).
Avatar f tn I have been on lantus since about 2003, and in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I ve just been reading how lantus may cause cancer . im afraid the lantus may have caused this. did anyone else have anything like this happen? as well im type1 diabetic and my bloodsugers are really up and down all the time and i take a split dose of lantus. my suger will drop and stay down all day or for hours!
Avatar n tn I have noticed that no matter what I do the lantus stings after I inject it before I go to bed. Is this common? Is there any tricks anyone has learned that has helped them?
