The high levels at night are probably happening because the evening Lantus is not truly lasting 24 hours. See if this makes sense to you... Lantus is marketed as a 24-hour insulin, but it doesn't work full force for exactly 24 hours and then -- poof -- suddenly quit. If you read the paperwork in your Lantus box, you will read that it lasts anywhere between 20-24 hours.
I started by taking 1 unit at bedtime, with my usual dose in the morning, figuring that 1 unit would not be an overdose. Then, the next morning, I took 1 unit less of the Lantus morning dose. That evening I continued the 1 unit of Lantus, so that I had almost two full days on the new split dose before adjusting it again. The next night, I increased the evening Lantus by 1 unit again, and decreased the morning Lantus by 1 unit the next morning.
I took lantus throughout treatment. However, my doctor pulled me off metformin because it sometimes messes with ALT levels, making it difficult to get an accurate picture of how liver enzymes respond to tx. I ate so little during tx, and a lot of it was ice cream. Nevertheless, for some reason - despite all the sugar in ice cream - my A1c was better during tx than it ever was before or after.
I take humulog with each meal and Lantus before bed. This is the only treatment meathod I have ever used. My A1c average over the past year is about 5.2. My average blood sugar is 110. When I first started using the Lantus I was getting several low blood sugars during the day (probably still honeymooning) but now I only get maybe 1. I do have the dawn phenomenon occationally where my pre breakfast blood sugar is actually higher than my post dinner sugar the night before.

Hello. I am T1 since Oct 2004, and switched to Lantus in Feb. Most of my BG numbers are very good (A1Cs 6.0 and 5.5), but since switching to Lantus, I have experienced 5 episodes of sudden and extreme drops in BG. They happen late morning, not related to breakfast, novolog dose or exercise. My BG is usually above 150 when it starts, and I must consume 150-200 grams of carbs (as juice or gel) to get it to stabilize, usually in 20-30 mins.
There are several people here who have had expereince with blood sugar problems and treatment. Some used stuff like metformin or even insulin throughout treatment. My expereience was that high blood sugar levels went away while on treatment. That was a result of the red cell killing abilities of the ribavirin.
I would suggest you take your daughter to an endo and ask to have her placed on the more up to date treatment regimen of a long-acting basal, which would be either Lantus or Levemir, and bolus such as the Humalog with a dose determined by insulin:carb ratio. I also highly recommend the book, Using Insulin by John Walsh.
Since then he has been on many differnet variation of meds. Just over the past 6 months or so, they gave him LANTUS, in addition to his meds. (Actos, Glypizide, Metaformin) He takes the meds in the morning and the LANTUS at night. Here is my problem. He has a lot of highs and lows.
Just 3 weeks ago, his average was 115. This week a different story.
He has been in the mid 200's and he has not changed his diet.
This morning, before breakfast, his sugar was 337.
It is a once a week injection that I take along with my daily Metformin and nightly Lantus injection. It has worked really well over the past year. Has anyone else used it? Others I have spoken with have never heard of it. And on top of that, I spoke with a customer service rep at Brystol-Myers who said it was not intended to be used with insulin.
I have been on lantus since about 2003, and in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I ve just been reading how lantus may cause cancer . im afraid the lantus may have caused this. did anyone else have anything like this happen? as well im type1 diabetic and my bloodsugers are really up and down all the time and i take a split dose of lantus. my suger will drop and stay down all day or for hours!
I have noticed that no matter what I do the lantus stings after I inject it before I go to bed. Is this common? Is there any tricks anyone has learned that has helped them?
I am a type 1A diabetic with normal insulin sensitivity and predictable bg responses to insulin doses. Until now. I went on a reducing diet (high protein, next to 0 carbs, increased exercise) but never decreased my once daily PM dose of Lantus (10 units.) Immediately my AM bg's jumped to over 200 and stayed there. No hypoglycemia during sleep (I never woke up, anyway.)I could bring my daily bg's down with my shortacting insulin.
My father is a liver transplant waiting patient with a MELD score of 17 at NYP in NY, just wanted to know his chances to get interferon treatment (since he had never had the treatment before)while waiting for a new liver to stop the virus form recurring after the transplant surgery.
His last Platelet count was 27000, and weights 120 lb.

ive tried numerous pills for diabetes over the past 20 years. Efficacy never enough- so we tried lantus.
Lantus is very slow-acting and really rarely causes severe hypoglycemia, in my experience, for warning symptoms occur long before it gets severe. However, if the warning symptoms are not listened to, I have personally noticed that the hypoglycemia that eventually happens makes me feel worse than some of the quick-acting insulins do.
And as for the sweats about a half hour after taking Lantus, there IS a slight peak action with Lantus, although this peak action for most people is several hours after taking the Lantus. In my case, I usually take my Lantus at about 6 am, and I notice a peak that causes my glucose levels to drop by about 8 am. This happens even if I have not taken any Novolog or eaten breakfast (sometimes I wait until I get to work to take Novolog and eat breakfast), so it has to be the Lantus peaking.
I seemed to be gaining a lot of weight since being on Lantus for the last two years as well I have mood swings and irritability and now started having severe lows right after injecting the Lantus (it usually happens if I bleed after my shot and has happened since switching to the Solostar disposable pen needle.

Diabetes is a disease where the body does not proses carbohydrates properly resulting in high blood sugar (BG). lantus is a background insulin, lasts about 24 hours. lantus just keeps you idling along.
When you eat carbs it raises BG as your body digests the food. so you need insulin to lower your BG the same way that food raises BG. When you eat or when your BG is too high you need to take insulin that is faster acting than Lantus.
I have had so much problem with that Lantus Opticlik that my Health Providers will switch me to the Levimere Flex Pen after I use up all the lantus cartridges. Is lantus a better insulin or is Levimere just as good as Lantus using it as a basal 24 Hour insulin???. I get my supplies from the Military Hospital because I am a retired service member and they do not have the lantus solostar flex pen but they do have the levimer flex pen.
My doc put me on that toujeo stuff, I gained weight same as you all, felt like crap it was the same 70 units as I was taking with lantus. He said something about it last longer and other stuff. I had enough told him I want lantus back and someone needs to figure out where to put all these toujeo pens that I got cause I'm not taking it anymore.
I have been type 1 diabetic for 24 years now (female), and I am using lantus(once a day) and humalog(3 times) for the last 5 years.
between bedtime and breakfast I am having a drop in BGs of around 10-13 mmols. and then in the mornings, after breakfast BGs shoot up, so my normal carb-insulin ratio doesnt work well.
I cannot understand why this overnight drop is happening, which is becoming scary. I tested BGs during the night and there seems to be a drop of 2 mmol/hour.
Was prescribed Lantus 1yr and half ago and for all that time I was telling various doctors and the pharmacy that my sense of smell had been altered that all perfume smelt terrible. I even posted this on the internet. Also that my face cheeks get rash. All the Doctors and Pharmacies ignored me saying they had never heard of such a side effect. Further to much worse facial rash I insisted to go off the Lantus and get something else.
t happened in so long that I cannot remember what the formula is to calculate the lantus. I do remember that prior to going on the pump, her endocrinologist switched her lantus shot from AM to PM as her morning bg's were higher than they wanted them. You should discuss this possibility with your endo along with your thoughts of splitting the dose, however I have never heard of this as an option. I gather from your post that you are not getting much assistance from the nurse practitioner.
I have been prescribed Lantus insulin for my diabetes. Since I have started using the injections (6 months), I have experienced dry and burning in my eyes. My doctor suggested that I get my tear ducts plugged to make sue I have enough tears to be able to wear contacts. I have worn contacts since 1976, and this is the first major problems that I have had. I now have to wear glasses at all times; maybe once every two weeks I can wear contacts for 3-5 hours.
