Lantus not working

Common Questions and Answers about Lantus not working

lantus

Avatar n tn s and was theerfore recently put on to Lantis (1 dose in the am) with Novorapid (meals), but it does not seem to be working for me. I was not getting into single figures on the dose pescribed and upping it (now by 2 units) has not helped. Novorapid sort of keeps it under control at meals but my base rate is simply not adequate.
Avatar n tn My problem is that the last two Lantus pens I have tried using were working fine , until I got down to about 200 to 240 units left in the 250 unit pens and then I could no longer depress the button. What is going on. and how do I rectify this problem. My insurance company will not allow me to get more insulin by the time I run out of my present amount.
Avatar n tn As for running high in the morning, many of us who take Lantus in the morning have to split that dosage, taking most of it in a morning shot, but a portion in a before-bedtime shot. This adds another injection to our routines, but it keeps some Lantus working while we sleep, only not as much as when we take the entire dose in the evening.
Avatar f tn s important to get this under control as you know. We are glad you are working with your doctor on this. Here is information regarding Lantus https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-20815/lantus-u-100-insulin-subcutaneous/details. With regards to taking your oral medications and Lantus together, please speak to your doctor. For many patients, as long as you are checking your blood sugar levels, this is fine. But your doctor should guide you in this.
Avatar n tn So, in answer to your question, Lantus is definitely worth it. Currently, Lantus is not subsidised here in New Zealand either. So I will be paying the full price too.
Avatar f tn Hello I am new to novolin My Dr has me on 15 units twice a day after being on lantus for 1 year and it just did not work at all for me under 29 units was not enough and over 20 units bottomed my sugar out My question is and this also did this when i was on lantus is it normal after injecting yourself with insulin that my blood sugar spikes up I am talking it can be 150 and after the injection it will jump up to 300 with in 3 hours is this normal or is it just me I know I am not making sense
Avatar n tn Hi, If this low dose of lantus twice daily is working for you without any problems, there is no reason to change it. Lantus is written as once daily but many doctors(including myself) and patients split the dose because even though it is supposed to be "peakless", it is not for some people. At low doses it works especially well as a split dose. Levemir can be used instead, and is more commonly written as twice daily.
Avatar n tn I am not a phycan, but i would highly suggest that you dcusss this change with your endocronolgist as you might have to do this over several days as lantus is a 24 hr insurlin. The other is that lantus really doies not have a peak so it should not effect your luch time injuection.
Avatar n tn The high levels at night are probably happening because the evening Lantus is not truly lasting 24 hours. See if this makes sense to you... Lantus is marketed as a 24-hour insulin, but it doesn't work full force for exactly 24 hours and then -- poof -- suddenly quit. If you read the paperwork in your Lantus box, you will read that it lasts anywhere between 20-24 hours.
Avatar n tn I am not on a restricted diet but I have cut out sugary drinks and allow myself to one sweet anything a day. I am supposed to see a dietiantian and endocrinologist as soon as my insurance clears it. I mostly walk for exercise.
Avatar f tn His glucose level has been over 200 for the last 5 years. He is taking 2000 mg of metformin, and 20 glipozide. It is not working. He has to be under 200 in order to drive, so he has really been eating correctly this week and checking and checking maybe double dosing medications. His level bounces up and down 50 points within 10 minutes of the last checking. Is it normal to go up and down so rapidly? We are using 2 checkers to make sure there wasnt a malfunction.
Avatar n tn I'm having the same problem . The Dr says it does not work that way I'm just not taking enough take more . Doubled my lantas &taking up to25-40 unts with or without a meal . My a1 has gone from 7.1to 10.5 in the past two mths . My bs. Was 2751hr. After a small meal of all protein so I took 20unts novalog 2hrs later it was 380 took 25more cked it a he later it's 460 .
Avatar n tn m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Lantus is a long acting insulin that starts working within 1 to 2 hours, with a minimal peak in about 6 hours, and lasts 24 hours. You take one shot of it for your long acting insulin, and you still need to take a fast acting insulin to cover your corrections and meals. It is provides a fairly constant basal insulin all day long.
Avatar f tn t think about me rejecting it. All my doctors told me was that it is not working for me. So I HAd to keep changing insulins. Now I am on the flexpen (great inivention) taking Regular and one shot of Lantus before bedtime. It all works! I am so sorry to hear that your wife has filed. If her reason(s) are because of the diabetes, she is so selfish. Being married to any diabetic, the partner is wise to learn and be there if needed. I am so sorry to hear this. It's not like we haave leprosy!
Avatar n tn My Dr gave me a vial (not a pen) of Lantus to see if I perfered it that way. I forgot it in my pocket for six hours. Is it ruined?
Avatar f tn and weights well over 230 pounds only takes 34 units of lantus at night and up to 16 units of humalog if he eats pizza. I have told him that the lantus dose is governed by weight and since I weigh 220 and take 33 units a day, he isn't taking nearly enough. I think he is compensating with the humalog, which runs a higher risk that he will and does have insulin reactions. I also started out taking lantus at night.
Avatar m tn s comment on his insulin adjustment, his Endocrinologist, not his PCP, should be aware that upping his Lantus dosage has not helped. You may wish to discuss premixed insulin, which is a combination of specific proportions of intermediate/long-acting and short acting insulin in one bottle or insulin pen. Btw, Lantus [not to be confused with Apridra] is a long acting insulin not short [fast].
Avatar n tn I too have had a couple of bad low sugar episodes... But not from Lantus, but from mistaking my Humalog pen for my Lantus pen. They are not exactly easy to tell apart when you are tired (I take it at night). I was taking 16 units, so imagine the same of Humalog! Wow! Cram those glucose tabs!!! On a pump now (or rather the pod) for the past couple days. Harder to goof up.
Avatar n tn I started by taking 1 unit at bedtime, with my usual dose in the morning, figuring that 1 unit would not be an overdose. Then, the next morning, I took 1 unit less of the Lantus morning dose. That evening I continued the 1 unit of Lantus, so that I had almost two full days on the new split dose before adjusting it again. The next night, I increased the evening Lantus by 1 unit again, and decreased the morning Lantus by 1 unit the next morning.
Avatar n tn So, at that point, I had been on Lantus for 2 weeks, my doctor decided that it was not working for me and that I should switch back to NPH. With each meal, and actually any snack I have, I take NovoRapid. That basically works fine and I do not have any problems with that. I just can't seem to get my overnight and morning readings to be normal. If I take the Lantus in the morning - are the effects not wearing off by the middle of the night so I may still go high?
Avatar n tn Does anyone know a formula for amount of Lantus needed for a basal dose vs how many units fast-acting you take per carb? I have major swings. Yesterday was told by a nurse that the Lantus I take is really low compared to amount of Humalog I take, but she never told me HOW much she thought I should be taking. I take 1.5 u Humalog per carb for all meals (for last 3 weeks - has changed many times). I'm supposed to take 11 u Lantus in am. My morning BS is usually 300-500.
Avatar n tn Since then he has been on many differnet variation of meds. Just over the past 6 months or so, they gave him LANTUS, in addition to his meds. (Actos, Glypizide, Metaformin) He takes the meds in the morning and the LANTUS at night. Here is my problem. He has a lot of highs and lows. Just 3 weeks ago, his average was 115. This week a different story. He has been in the mid 200's and he has not changed his diet. This morning, before breakfast, his sugar was 337.
Avatar m tn From what you said it sounds like she is trying to up Lantus to cover the food intake and it is not working. I think it should be the opposite. She should be taking Lantus to keep the basal normal and the Fast acting to cover the food. You need to work on getting her carb to insulin ratio corrected. That should help solve the problem drastically. This ratio can easily change with age activites and stress and other factors. It will NOT remain the same your whole life.
Avatar n tn m not a physician, so pls check this with your doc) that your dosage of Lantus is not yet right -- at least not yet right at that time of day. Before adjusting your dose, I'd recommend noting when you take your various shots and your bg results at various times. Study 3 days' worth of data. What pattern(s) do you see? The catch-22 with fine-tuning our dosage is that we must respond to a *pattern* or we'll spend the rest of our lives chasing individual numbers.
Avatar n tn I use a short-acting insulin, Novolog, and a 24-period insulin, Lantis. I give Novolog with each meal, and Lantus when I go to bed. I am having troubles with my sugars in the morning. I wake up at 7am, and eat breakfast. I give my shot immediately after eating breakfast, around 7:20. I test my sugar before I eat breakfast and it is normally good. Then at 8am, I head to school. When I arrive at school around 9am, I test my sugar, which is usually pretty high (200-300).
Avatar f tn You did not mention how old the bottle of Lantus is that you are using. Lantus comes with instructions saying to not use any "open" bottle longer than one month. My twin and I, both type 1 diabetics and both on Lantus, do notice unpredictable things happening when a bottle is older than one month, or occasionally when a bottle seems to go "bad a little bit before the one month deadline.
