Lantus hypoglycemia

Common Questions and Answers about Lantus hypoglycemia

lantus

Avatar n tn My experience has been that Lantus is rarely a problem as far as hypoglycemia is concerned, so I doubt that it alone is the problem.
Avatar f tn I am a type 1A diabetic with normal insulin sensitivity and predictable bg responses to insulin doses. Until now. I went on a reducing diet (high protein, next to 0 carbs, increased exercise) but never decreased my once daily PM dose of Lantus (10 units.) Immediately my AM bg's jumped to over 200 and stayed there. No hypoglycemia during sleep (I never woke up, anyway.)I could bring my daily bg's down with my shortacting insulin.
Avatar n tn I, too, have had sudden-onset hypoglycemia after injecting Lantus. It happened only three times, always after having bleed-back at the injection site. As other have said, it's truly scary (particularly when driving), and it took a lot of carbs to counteract. It seemed as though the entire Lantus dose took effect immediately (like a fast-acting insulin). After the third incident, I began to split my Lantus dose, taking half in the morning and half in the evening.
Avatar n tn No, doses should be raised gradually to avoid risking hypoglycemia. The Lantus is meant to provide background insulin. It does not cover the carbs you eat if you are having spikes 2 hours after meals. You need short-acting insulin for that.
Avatar n tn His blood sugar at 9pm was 155 I gave him the Lantus as ordered. At 2am he was shaky, sweaty, and weak.was the Lantus dose to much for his blood sugar level?I should mention he ate supper late 7pm.I'm wondering if I gave it to close to thr humolog dose before supper.
Avatar m tn Past one year has been very traumatic for us.HE has had night time seizures due to which his lantus has been adjusted to different timings...ie from mornings to two times a day and now back to night time, notthing works ...HisSugar level goes up to 350 in the mornings! his weight is 70 kg and doctor has increased his Lantus from 32 unit to 35 units. He takes apidra as his short insulin. If his BG is say 130 before dinner he takes 7-8 units of apidra.
Avatar n tn And as for the sweats about a half hour after taking Lantus, there IS a slight peak action with Lantus, although this peak action for most people is several hours after taking the Lantus. In my case, I usually take my Lantus at about 6 am, and I notice a peak that causes my glucose levels to drop by about 8 am. This happens even if I have not taken any Novolog or eaten breakfast (sometimes I wait until I get to work to take Novolog and eat breakfast), so it has to be the Lantus peaking.
Avatar m tn Hello, This is my first post, so I'm sorry if it's in the wrong forum. OK so I'm 19 years old, male, I've been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last summer, and I'm using Lantus 24hr along with Novo Rapid insulin for meals because pills are bad for my kidney and liver in the long-term (so says doctor). I've been having a lot of hypoglycemia recently too. But my question here is about Masturbation in relationship with glucose levels.
Avatar n tn Why is it that Lantus requires a prescription when other long-acting types of insulin do not? I feel like I should be able to go to a drugstore and purchase any type of insulin that I choose without a prescription.
Avatar m tn as I never heard of these problems with Lantus. Lantus is a 24 hour basal insulin that starts to work in an hour after injected and lasts most of the day without peaking. Also, I have never heard of a Lantus pen but have a call into our local rep to ask. My teenage son has Type 1 diabetes and there is never a dull moment with diabetes, is there.
Avatar m tn Very little acitivity since winter, bad lungs, joints, gout, heart, etc. Doctor says he needs to change to Lantus insulin. Should we see endocrinologist for another opinion? Couldn't we try other oral meds first and dietary changes? Also triglycerides very high, 600s, for a while now. Chronic renal disease, but stable, Any ideas or recs.? Is it better to go insulin route? I am worried about hypoglycemia, as his mobility is limited.
Avatar n tn I have had some scarey episodes of hypoglycemia, and I certainly understand your fears. However, I want to encourage you that nowadays, the insulin regimens that are available can get you in tight control without having to live with severe hypos. There are ways to keep tight control even when you sleep, and you need to talk to your endocrinologist about perhaps making a change in your set-up. Nowadays, many of us are able to keep very tight control without living in constant fear of hypos.
491523 tn?1209215092 First, lemme say hi. I just found this forum. It looks like it can help me a lot! Second: I'm an American type 2 on insulin. I use the OneTouch Ultra. It displays results in mg/dL. While on vacation last summer in Canada, I took advantage of an offer for a free OneTouch Ultra Mini. It displays results in mmol/L. The Canadian pharmacist assured me I could change the meter to display in mg/dL. But in fact I cannot. The manual clearly says so. I'd like to keep using it.
Avatar f tn Insulin reduces glucose [blood sugar] levels not elevate. Keep in mind many things elevate glucose levels; improper diet, lack of exercise, excessive body weight, even stress. Test times: 1. - Lantus - before dosing to see your beginning day level 2. - Preprandial - right before you eat to get a baseline measurement 3. - Postprandial - 2-3 hours following a meal. This will tell you how the foods you ate affected your glucose level. Also important to dose Lantus at the same time each day.
1273125 tn?1365077526 If it is too much insulin then a side effect of too much insulin can cause hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is not deadly... UNLESS it is severe.
Avatar n tn I myself used to have lows when sleeping often enough to frighten me and my husband when I was taking NPH. I switched to taking a 24-hour insulin called Lantus, and this solved the problem for me. So if he is not interested in switching to a pump, beautiful control without severe lows can be acheived with this newer-than-NPH insulin. I agree with the previous postings that stress can cause lows, and of course being a newlywed is a stress, even though a GOOD stress.
Avatar m tn I am on 500 metformins twice a day and 40 units of Lantus. When my sugar is really high I will take one extra metformin. Is this okay ?
Avatar n tn I, too, am a long-timer who uses Lantus. I am prone to hypoglycemia and my endo recommended right away when I started the Lantus insulin that I take it in the morning instead of at night. My reading about this insulin tells me that it does peter out some in between 20-24 hours, which makes sense, for it has no timer that automactically turns off a switch at the 24-hour mark.
Avatar m tn I started taking Lyrica due to nueropathy pain in my arms that made it difficult to sleep. Since I have started Lyrica ( i take one 50mg capsule before bedtime) I have noticed a very large spike in my blood sugar levels in the early hours of the morning. I have been monitering these changes and have done nothing different in regards to diet and insulin dosages. Last night when I went to bed my glucose level was 140, that was at 11:00 P.M., 4 hours after I ate a light dinner.
Avatar m tn You may have a tolerance for high blood sugar and a drop in the glucose can cause the hypoglycemia symptoms even though the numbers can be high. Have you try crystal light drinks?
Avatar n tn NPH and regular Humilin are older therapies. Something like Lantus or Levemir as the long acting and something like Novolog or another fast acting insulin are much more common these days. They give more consistent coverage with fewer spikes. Does he have hypoglycemia unawareness? If he's getting down to 19, it sounds like he may. That is a condition where he can't tell he's getting low. It is possible to correct the condition, you just have to work out a plan with his endo.
Avatar n tn My tests indicate to Drs. I am or am becoming type 1 and concerned with weight loss so placed on insulin. Lantus -5 units. Sugars are controlled and A1c in the 6'es. The big problem is that I am basically foggyheaded all the time upon awakening. Unclear, drunk feeling although not like I am going to fall down. they have checked adrenal glands, thyroid, etc. there seems to be no pattern with sugar levels. Could it be the suger levels, or insulin itself?? Or something else.
Avatar n tn Hi again, Kristin, Actually, while the pump may not be the right thing for you, there is a big difference between Lantus & a pump's basal. When we take a shot o' Lantus (wonderful insulin that it is!), we get a steady impact from that dose for about 24 hours.
