I have a question regarding bolus insulin for snacks. How many carbs can he eat without having to bolus? He takes Lantus at bedtime, then Novolog for breakfast, lunch and dinner at a carb/ insulin ratio of 1:12. He goes to school all day, and sometimes gets hungry and I am wondering if it is necessary always for him to take insuling even for snacks?
Any ideas/input would be appreciated.
If shes panicking about taking the Lantus, just let her know It is only once a day, for about 15 seconds and she can go one more day without having to do it. (OS- I am on 26 units of lantus, 5' 3' and 109 lbs.)(Wait one more thing, does she also have hair loss? Because I do (nothing noticeable by looking at me, its just everywhere though. m not sure if you live outside of the USA, but my understanding is that Lantus is NOT available for use in a pen here in the US. My daughter just switched to Lantus via syringe & Novolog via pen after 8 years on an insulin pump. Her diabetes educator just gave her the Lantus prescription 3 days ago & said it is not available in any other form. I have read that outside the USA, however, it is sold in pen format.
I started the free Lantus trial 3 months ago. I have found that it does have a peak. And it doesn't last the a full 24 hours. So I am splitting the dose between breakfast and dinner time shots. But, for me, the benefits of using Lantus are still very worthwhile.
My blood sugars have become a lot more predictable. And managing them has become a lot more flexible. In the last three months, my HBA1c has declined from 7.7 to 6.3, and I expect it to come down to about 5.8.
Is Lantus and Metformin ok to take or is the Metformin harmful to my liver? I know several with Hep-c who take Metformin.
The publicised action profile for Lantus is typical for "most" users. But many of us have a different experience. Like you, I have found that Lantus has a definit peak at about 5 hours after injecting. I also found that Lantus doesn't last the full 24 hours with me.
I have got around this by splitting the Lantus dose into morning and evening shots. I use 7 units daily, 4 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. The peaks for each shot are fairly small.
Does anyone know a formula for amount of Lantus needed for a basal dose vs how many units fast-acting you take per carb? I have major swings. Yesterday was told by a nurse that the Lantus I take is really low compared to amount of Humalog I take, but she never told me HOW much she thought I should be taking.
I take 1.5 u Humalog per carb for all meals (for last 3 weeks - has changed many times). I'm supposed to take 11 u Lantus in am. My morning BS is usually 300-500.
I have been on lantus since about 2003, and in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I ve just been reading how lantus may cause cancer . im afraid the lantus may have caused this. did anyone else have anything like this happen? as well im type1 diabetic and my bloodsugers are really up and down all the time and i take a split dose of lantus. my suger will drop and stay down all day or for hours!
s also on a once-daily PM dose of Lantus and has predictable bg responses to insulin doses, and Lantus has worked really well for her, but she has not changed her diet. When she's in a period of intense exercise (during swim-team season), she reduces both her Lantus and Novolog doses a little, and it works fine.
Let us know if you've tried lowering the dose and what happened. I also was unable to find out anything about this in the literature.

pdxer - in regard to using a jet injector for Lantus and Humalog. You have the same problem as if you were using the same syringe for the two different insulins. The MediJect folks suggest that you use one 'needle free head' for the Lantus, and then switch it for another head for the Humalog. Sounded like more trouble than it was worth, so I simply bought another MJ. The price is reasonable, and my insurance company co-pays 80%.

I have been on Lantus for over two years having switched from Humulin N at bedtime. Not only have I gained 30 pounds, I started having mood swings and irritability since starting Lantus and lately now in the past month I had two severe lows right after taking the Lantus (within 30 minutes of taking my shot).
And as for the sweats about a half hour after taking Lantus, there IS a slight peak action with Lantus, although this peak action for most people is several hours after taking the Lantus. In my case, I usually take my Lantus at about 6 am, and I notice a peak that causes my glucose levels to drop by about 8 am. This happens even if I have not taken any Novolog or eaten breakfast (sometimes I wait until I get to work to take Novolog and eat breakfast), so it has to be the Lantus peaking.
My wife has since filed for divorce, i am now on new insulin, Lantus, and i cant even talk with her. There are more things that were going on because of the NPH since my doctor had instructed me to take a third shot at lunch time. I love this Lantus, things are great since ive been on it but still having trouble understanding the things abou tthe NPH, any help would be apperciated.

You’re looking to figure out two ratios, the carb ratio and the correction factor. One is for carbs you eat, the other is for how much to dose for highs.

It uses the total daily dose to figure out how many grams one unit of insulin will cover. Then you can use that to figure out what to dose for the carbs you eat at a meal.
When you eat, you need the fast acting insulin like Novolog to act quickly to cover the meal. For some, Lantus and Levemir act the same. For me, Levemir seemed to work better in that it provided more consistency to my blood sugar levels. I like Levemir. I have switched to 2 shots per day (morning and night) instead of just taking the 1 shot at night, because the 1 shot at night may not cover the 24 hours.
I have been type 1 diabetic for 24 years now (female), and I am using lantus(once a day) and humalog(3 times) for the last 5 years.
between bedtime and breakfast I am having a drop in BGs of around 10-13 mmols. and then in the mornings, after breakfast BGs shoot up, so my normal carb-insulin ratio doesnt work well.
I cannot understand why this overnight drop is happening, which is becoming scary. I tested BGs during the night and there seems to be a drop of 2 mmol/hour.
Was prescribed Lantus 1yr and half ago and for all that time I was telling various doctors and the pharmacy that my sense of smell had been altered that all perfume smelt terrible. I even posted this on the internet. Also that my face cheeks get rash. All the Doctors and Pharmacies ignored me saying they had never heard of such a side effect. Further to much worse facial rash I insisted to go off the Lantus and get something else.
My doc put me on that toujeo stuff, I gained weight same as you all, felt like crap it was the same 70 units as I was taking with lantus. He said something about it last longer and other stuff. I had enough told him I want lantus back and someone needs to figure out where to put all these toujeo pens that I got cause I'm not taking it anymore.
Very little acitivity since winter, bad lungs, joints, gout, heart, etc. Doctor says he needs to change to Lantus insulin. Should we see endocrinologist for another opinion? Couldn't we try other oral meds first and dietary changes? Also triglycerides very high, 600s, for a while now. Chronic renal disease, but stable, Any ideas or recs.? Is it better to go insulin route? I am worried about hypoglycemia, as his mobility is limited.
I have been prescribed Lantus insulin for my diabetes. Since I have started using the injections (6 months), I have experienced dry and burning in my eyes. My doctor suggested that I get my tear ducts plugged to make sue I have enough tears to be able to wear contacts. I have worn contacts since 1976, and this is the first major problems that I have had. I now have to wear glasses at all times; maybe once every two weeks I can wear contacts for 3-5 hours.
