Lantus for diabetics

Common Questions and Answers about Lantus for diabetics

lantus

Avatar f tn My daughter is 17 and is having trouble with adjusting insulin doses...how much lantus would be a good dose to start with?
Avatar f tn I seemed to be gaining a lot of weight since being on Lantus for the last two years as well I have mood swings and irritability and now started having severe lows right after injecting the Lantus (it usually happens if I bleed after my shot and has happened since switching to the Solostar disposable pen needle. Anyone else have any bad reactions to the Lantus.
Avatar n tn So imediject has a valid point if you are taking Lantus in the morning. Many diabetics split their doses of Lantus and take some at night and some first thing in the morning so that peaking is minimal (for some of us, there IS a slight peak about 4 hours after injection) and the petering out of it as it wears off is also minimal.
Avatar f tn Wow..thank you for the great tips...I should have mentioned I do take the insulin at night, still practicing with the night time snack. I will be sure to try vinegar and cheese and a couple of spoons of peanut butter sound good too. I'll be sure to Google for LADA too! Thank you again for all the great information!!
Avatar m tn Very little acitivity since winter, bad lungs, joints, gout, heart, etc. Doctor says he needs to change to Lantus insulin. Should we see endocrinologist for another opinion? Couldn't we try other oral meds first and dietary changes? Also triglycerides very high, 600s, for a while now. Chronic renal disease, but stable, Any ideas or recs.? Is it better to go insulin route? I am worried about hypoglycemia, as his mobility is limited.
Avatar m tn m not sure if you live outside of the USA, but my understanding is that Lantus is NOT available for use in a pen here in the US. My daughter just switched to Lantus via syringe & Novolog via pen after 8 years on an insulin pump. Her diabetes educator just gave her the Lantus prescription 3 days ago & said it is not available in any other form. I have read that outside the USA, however, it is sold in pen format.
Avatar n tn i have been a type 1 diabetic for 13 yrs now and for all newly diagnosed diabetics...exercise is as vital as insulin to prevent complication and to build up ur own confidence. I feel soo much better after going to gym for aerobics or weight training and work out about 1 and half hour at the gym 3 times a week and play squash 1-2 time a week. I would strongly stress anyone to do some exercise than none as it really helps. Awaiting your comments and once again thank you very much for your help.
Avatar m tn protocol, injectable insulin can be used ocasionally by diabetics who at times must (for social purposes) consume a large meal at a special family gathering for example.
Avatar f tn Are there any diabetics taking treatment? One of side effects is elevated blood sugar . Can someone help!
Avatar n tn Have you searched this website for previous postings? There are many of them regarding the use of Lantus that you may find helpful. Check them out and also check for others responses to your post. I would most definitely speak to your endocrinologist after doing some research and I am certain that between the two of you can come up with a regime that works well for you. Best of luck!
Avatar n tn re being treated as a Type 2 which is similar to, but not exactly the same as Type 1. Keeping your blood PRESSURE under good control is essential for all diabetics, so I'm glad you honored your doc's advice to restart those meds. I'm assuming that Tricor is a statin and that it's being Rx'd for heart protection, tho' I don't know that med in particular. The heart protection is also important for all us diabetics. Now, onto your gradually increasing blood sugars.
499220 tn?1243052283 It is cellulitis, and they put me on Bactrim (I know, usually for U T I's. But I take Vicodin, Clonopin, Verapamil, Lamictal, Cymbalta, Ferrous Sulfate, Lofibra, Ambien, Lyrica, Flovent, Albuterol, Novolog, Lantus, Metformin.....that's what I can think of off the top of my head, there's more though....) probably because of all the meds that I take. But I was feeling good the last dose into the treatment 2 tabs for 7 days.
Avatar n tn The premixed insulins (such as 30/70 and mix30) are more targeted for type 2 diabetics who dont need as much flexibility with their dosing and are not on a more intense therapy. 30/70 is a fixed dose system, meaning if you test and you're a little high right now you can add more 30/70, however you are also adding more longacting insulin as well... ie. 1 unit increase in the short acting is also 1 unit more increase in the long acting.
Avatar f tn 40). He is really WEAK, when this occurs should more humalog (as in correction) be given? It's bedtime and I don't want him to drop low.
Avatar n tn So, at that point, I had been on Lantus for 2 weeks, my doctor decided that it was not working for me and that I should switch back to NPH. With each meal, and actually any snack I have, I take NovoRapid. That basically works fine and I do not have any problems with that. I just can't seem to get my overnight and morning readings to be normal. If I take the Lantus in the morning - are the effects not wearing off by the middle of the night so I may still go high?
Avatar n tn I grew up on NPH and really had to watch for mid-day lows. Most doctors nowadays use Lantus alone as the long-lasting insulin and have given up NPH altogether because of the scary lows that often happen when it peaks. Most diabetics in America who take injections rather than using a pump use Lantus once or twice a day and a quick-acting insulin like Novolog before meals. We do not normally take NPH with the Lantus, for they do similar things.
Avatar f tn I use Novorapid as my quick acting and have low doses of that (10, 6, 8) and 16 Lantus. I have been type 1 diabteic for 26 years (since I was 5) and have not had problems with my weight but in the last 6 weeks have gained 5.1kg I am very active and am finding this hard to deal with. Can anyone shed any light on to what I can do to loose weight as i have tried everything ! I am considering going onto an Insulin pump.
Avatar m tn I just started on Lantus and Humalog and my blood sugars seem to keep going up, I take 30 U at night Lantus and I take Humalog 10 before meals if my bs is 180 or higher, does this sound right, I was diagnosed a Type 2 about 6 years ago, but the Glipizide and Metformin I was taking has been stopped, but my fasting bs has been 270 or higher any suggestions I know control my diet I get that, I also weigh 239 my Dr's say to loose weight, and I am going to try.
Avatar n tn When the newer 24-hour Lantus was made available to diabetics, I switched and life is much easier now. The Lantus offers a base dose for about a day, with minimal peaks. The child then has to take a shot before every meal but the shot can be given immediately after he eats -- the mom watches carefully to see how many carbs he consumed and then figures the dosage out based on what he ate. The reasoning for using NPH instead of Lantus may be because more shots are needed with the Lantus.
Avatar n tn Heck, I was even using NPH instead of Lantus because I could never get Lantus to work right for me. Even so, my two NPH shots plus sliding-scale Humalog worked very well. And I work out (aerobic and weight lifting) religiously. The tight control changed as my metabolism changed in my early 30s. I'm 32 now and things just went a little whacky, for lack of a better word. I tried (like hell) to get things back under control, but I just couldn't do it.
Avatar m tn My control was very bad at that age as well. Also, I (and many other diabetics) have found that Lantus really only lasts about 12 hours, not 24. Besides, It can be dangerous to take that much insulin all at once IMO. I'm not a doctor, though. You should bring it up with hers. Again, best of luck.
Avatar f tn My wife has since filed for divorce, i am now on new insulin, Lantus, and i cant even talk with her. There are more things that were going on because of the NPH since my doctor had instructed me to take a third shot at lunch time. I love this Lantus, things are great since ive been on it but still having trouble understanding the things abou tthe NPH, any help would be apperciated.
Avatar m tn Non diabetics pancreas will immediately fluctuate to keep stasis within the body. Most non-diabetics will not get close to 120. The highest I have seen a non-diabetics blood sugar raise (after eating a ton of processed sugar) was 102. When you are not diabetic your body automatically adapts to the changes in nutrients in order to keep your organs working properly.
Avatar f tn If I work to reduce my lantus dosage while maintaining a proper blood sugar will that aid weight loss? Does anything out there help to boost metabolism in diabetics? Frustrated! Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Avatar n tn t know too much about Gad antibodies except that it happened to me before they could test for it. Lantus is great but, also, you might ask about anti-inflammatories - if that might help retard the destruction rate. I remember reading something about the fact that if diagnosed early, there was hope that by using strategies and (possibly anti-inflammatories) waiting for new treatments, it could be completely prevented or slowed.
Avatar n tn I agree that instead of simply increasing the Lantus, you need to check with your doctor to make sure that you are not harboring an infection in the urinary tract. Most diabetics find that their blood sugars do increase when they are ill, and this could be the reason for all of the symptoms. You should be tested and infection ruled out completely before making adjustments to insulin. But don't put it off, for you don't want to be having high glucose levels for an extended period of time.
