Common Questions and Answers about Lantus bedtime

lantus

Avatar f tn Also is anyone combining both Novilin NPH and Lantus with Lantus at bedtime and the NPH at a lower dose around noon.
704262 tn?1247674638 Yes, you can take Novolog and Lantus in separate injections, but they may not be mixed in the same injection or at the same injection site. Generally Novolog is only prescribed if you follow a strict physician-approved routine. If you have a meter and strictly monitor results of various combinations under vary circumstances use of both medications should cause no problems. Be careful using the Novolog because you can easily drop your blood sugar to very low levels.
Avatar n tn I recently read on here somewhere that Lantus is usually given at bedtime because it lasts 18-24 hours and that by the time it is dwindling the dinner injection is given kind of as the bridge between the first Lantus injection and the next one the following evening. Thus making a steady regimen. However I quite frequently fail to give myself injections at dinner. I am just careless sometimes.
Avatar f tn Page 1 of 269 for: I'm taking 32-40 units of lantus a day. My A1C is 6.7. Why would I be given a pill instead of short acting insulin if the lantus has proven to work so well? ive tried numerous pills for diabetes over the past 20 years. Efficacy never enough- so we tried lantus.
Avatar f tn You can take it whenever like I used to at bedtime but it's important that you TRY and take it the same time everynight or at least within the same hr!! Doesn't matter what time you take it just keep a schedule..Some ppl take 1/2 at bedtime and 1/2 in the morning if they are way out of control..I always took mine around 11 pm but off Lantus now that I am on the pump..Good luck just try and keep taking it at the same time or around the same time, nothing bad will happen!!
Avatar f tn Insulin reduces glucose [blood sugar] levels not elevate. Keep in mind many things elevate glucose levels; improper diet, lack of exercise, excessive body weight, even stress. Test times: 1. - Lantus - before dosing to see your beginning day level 2. - Preprandial - right before you eat to get a baseline measurement 3. - Postprandial - 2-3 hours following a meal. This will tell you how the foods you ate affected your glucose level. Also important to dose Lantus at the same time each day.
Avatar f tn I am on Lantus since Jan 2014 and find it very hard to addapt. I was told to use 8 units at bedtime no matter what my reading is at night now i have notice at night when my reading is 9.7 and give myself 8 units of lantus my reading is very high in the morning 13.8 or more now when is lantus then suppose to kick in . my mealtime insulien is 2 to 3 units at mealtime, Surely I have to give myself more lantus at night maybe 12 units.
Avatar n tn My 6 year old son was diagnosed type 1 30 days ago (Oct 2). I understand it's really apples to oranges trying to compare a new pediatric Type 1 who may be Honeymooning with an lifelong adult, but anything may be helpful for you. He's a big healthy boy, 57 pounds. Per UCLA Med Center we are currently dosing him 8 units of Lantus split to 5 units in the AM before school, then 3 units about 2 hours before bedtime), with a bedtime BG check. We also are giving 1 unit Humalog per carb unit.
Avatar f tn I tend to be very cautious about corrections at bedtime, though it seems this was posted several hours ago. I don't understand 1 unit of Lantus; is that his entire Lantus dose? That is absurdly low! At any rate, his numbers are extremely high and even though you are checking for ketones, I would be quite concerned if you have been trying and can't get them down. I would contact his doctor immediately.
Avatar n tn My Dr gave me a vial (not a pen) of Lantus to see if I perfered it that way. I forgot it in my pocket for six hours. Is it ruined?
Avatar n tn Hello, I have been on Lantus for over two years having switched from Humulin N at bedtime. Not only have I gained 30 pounds, I started having mood swings and irritability since starting Lantus and lately now in the past month I had two severe lows right after taking the Lantus (within 30 minutes of taking my shot).
Avatar n tn I am on lantus and the Novolog pen. I know when I first started lantus I got very anxious and before I had to take it, just in a dead panic. I can not fully answer your question, but I need your help. Can you ask your daughter if her lantus burns, itches, and/or does the area she injects it (arm, leg, stomach) feel heavy or like a big knot is under it?
Avatar n tn I have a question regarding bolus insulin for snacks. How many carbs can he eat without having to bolus? He takes Lantus at bedtime, then Novolog for breakfast, lunch and dinner at a carb/ insulin ratio of 1:12. He goes to school all day, and sometimes gets hungry and I am wondering if it is necessary always for him to take insuling even for snacks? Any ideas/input would be appreciated.
Avatar n tn She takes only one shot of lantis a day. She takes this at bedtime. She has been on lantis for 5 months. (she used to take NPH) She does not notice as many peaks and valleys as when she was on NPH, however, she has heard from people other than medical professionals that it really only lasts 18 hours. My sister feels that being on lantis has helped her.
Avatar n tn I have been type 1 diabetic for 24 years now (female), and I am using lantus(once a day) and humalog(3 times) for the last 5 years. between bedtime and breakfast I am having a drop in BGs of around 10-13 mmols. and then in the mornings, after breakfast BGs shoot up, so my normal carb-insulin ratio doesnt work well. I cannot understand why this overnight drop is happening, which is becoming scary. I tested BGs during the night and there seems to be a drop of 2 mmol/hour.
12861759 tn?1432917955 Starting Monday, (Sunday @ bedtime) I am going to begin again to get my Lantus straightened out. 100u and I'm shooting for a target of at least 120. Lower if possible. Once I get that on a consistent basis I will work on my Novolog. I hope to start thinking like a pancreas very soon! (bought the book) Will keep in touch.
Avatar f tn Now I am on the flexpen (great inivention) taking Regular and one shot of Lantus before bedtime. It all works! I am so sorry to hear that your wife has filed. If her reason(s) are because of the diabetes, she is so selfish. Being married to any diabetic, the partner is wise to learn and be there if needed. I am so sorry to hear this. It's not like we haave leprosy! NPH is a slower working insulin and starts workingabout 2 hours after injecting.
Avatar n tn my doctor had me start by removing only 1 unit of my morning dose of Lantus, and then that night I took 1 unit of Lantus. That meant that I was only 1 unit shy of my total for the day. Then I waited 2 days to see what the pattern would be (you could even wait longer to see what happens). Then I did the same procedure again, removing another unit from my morning dose of Lantus and adding it to my evening dose. And wait several days to see what happens in the mornings.
Avatar n tn And as for the sweats about a half hour after taking Lantus, there IS a slight peak action with Lantus, although this peak action for most people is several hours after taking the Lantus. In my case, I usually take my Lantus at about 6 am, and I notice a peak that causes my glucose levels to drop by about 8 am. This happens even if I have not taken any Novolog or eaten breakfast (sometimes I wait until I get to work to take Novolog and eat breakfast), so it has to be the Lantus peaking.
Avatar n tn So imediject has a valid point if you are taking Lantus in the morning. Many diabetics split their doses of Lantus and take some at night and some first thing in the morning so that peaking is minimal (for some of us, there IS a slight peak about 4 hours after injection) and the petering out of it as it wears off is also minimal.
Avatar n tn About a month ago I started taking 36 Units of Lantus at bedtime using the Opticlik Cartridge Delivery System and during the day I use Novolog Insulin throaway Flex Pen and that is 12 units before I eat anything. I have had so much problem with that Lantus Opticlik that my Health Providers will switch me to the Levimere Flex Pen after I use up all the lantus cartridges. Is lantus a better insulin or is Levimere just as good as Lantus using it as a basal 24 Hour insulin???.
Avatar n tn The high levels at night are probably happening because the evening Lantus is not truly lasting 24 hours. See if this makes sense to you... Lantus is marketed as a 24-hour insulin, but it doesn't work full force for exactly 24 hours and then -- poof -- suddenly quit. If you read the paperwork in your Lantus box, you will read that it lasts anywhere between 20-24 hours.
Avatar n tn My endo has put me on Humalog 16-16-12 units pre meals and lantus at bedtime 14 units. Was just wondering if anyone was on a similiar protocol and had any tips?
Avatar m tn Hey there, I'm sorry to hear that your son is struggling with Meth. As a parent, that must be a very scary place for you to be. What kinds of things have been done to work on this serious situation? Is he testing his blood sugar or allowing someone to do it for him? The primary concern with Meth and diabetes hypoglycemia. People don't eat when using and if they are still taking Lantus at bedtime then they are at risk of having severely low blood sugar when they are sleeping.
Avatar n tn My sister also has type 1 and takes lantus at bedtime and then takes humalog for correction AND to cover food with carbs, so in her case, if her BG is not High (if it IS under a particular number that she and her doc have discussed), then she does not need a correction shot AND if she was not going to eat anything containing carbs at that time, she would not need humalog to cover food, HOWEVER, she would still take her lantus shot at bedtime.
Avatar f tn If she is experiencing lows or highs in her fasting and in between meals and bedtime than I would adjust the Lantus accordingly up or down. Always adjust a very small amount initially and see how that works for a couple days. If she is experiencing highs or lows two hours after meals than it would be her bolus and her Insulin:Carb ratio needs tweaking. You need to give a bit more information for us to go on.
Avatar n tn t mention the time of day that she is taking her bath. If it is after dinner (before bedtime), it is likely that her dinner insulin is peaking while she is in the bathtub, bringing her sugar low. You don't say whether the baths happen every night or not. I would be more likely to suspect that the timing of insulin peaking is the problem if it is happening every night. And yes, do make sure her hands are very dry before you test her.
Avatar n tn Anyway, I am willing to give this Lantus more time to work out since not having to think about it until bedtime is a great load off and if I can experiment with that special nighttime lapse time period awhile using intermediate insulins or Humalog maybe. Does anyone just take a small snack and some Humalog? I think I will discover some workable routine -- or my doctor will! Thank you again! This posting board is a great tool - I rarely meet or talk with insulin dependent diabetics.
