lantus and novorapid

My daughter seems to be having the same problem. She's 15 and takes 68 u of lantus at nite and supliments w/novolog pen when she's eating. They just keep increasing her dosage, but nothing seems to change. She eats pretty decently (for a teen), but she always seems to be high. I also wondered if she might be resistent to the lantus. We've tried new bottles, etc. How many units do you take per day?

If you use insulin to eat what you want and use insulin to cover over eating you will gain weight.

I take 42 units in the morning (my weight is 57kg) and 3-4 units of novorapid before main meals.... and sometimes I have hypoglycemia 4-5 am but in general my blood sugar is quite normal.... what i'm trying to say is maybe your son needs to increase his lantus dose, watch his night meals carefully... and of course consulting an endocrinologist is essential... It sounds like you are doing all the right things. Your physicians are aware of the situation and their recommendation to wait a few days is the usual response to situations like this. Kids are very resilient and he may not be experiencing any syptoms that slow him down, even though there may still be a little virus running through his body. So, give it a few days to let the virus fully work its way through his system.

I eat very sensibly and very rarely do I have carbs (mostly salads). I use Novorapid as my quick acting and have low doses of that (10, 6, 8) and 16 Lantus. I have been type 1 diabteic for 26 years (since I was 5) and have not had problems with my weight but in the last 6 weeks have gained 5.1kg I am very active and am finding this hard to deal with. Can anyone shed any light on to what I can do to loose weight as i have tried everything ! I am considering going onto an Insulin pump.

5, 1:6 and 1:7 and an adjustment of 1:2 this is for novorapid and then I take Lantus at night 37 units although i don';t always wake up between 5-6 like he wants me to. Still I have read online that Lantus causes weight gain althoug it is better than NPH apparently. Althoug I used to take NPH and still I was 30 pounds lighter. So now with novorapid and Lantus have gained 30 pouds.

I did not start any other meds with the Lantus. I also became proactive last night and stopped the Lantus. I went back to my NovoRapid, Novolin NPH routine. Will see how I feel in a couple of days. Today went well. I want to find out before discussion with the dr. if this could be the problem, otherwise they will have nothing to compare it to because as I am finding out there are many different reactions as there are people.

About a month ago, my doctor changed my long acting insulin from Novolin NPH to Lantus. This completely threw me off and I ended up being woken up by paramedics 3 times in 1 week. My blood sugar would be normal before bed and then by morning it had gone to 1.8. When I would eat a snack before bed to keep my blood sugar from dropping, I would go high - 13.0-15.0 on average. My doctor has now switched me back to my Novolin NPH and I am still having a hard time getting back on track.

My partner is diabetic and he is on novorapid and tresiba we was wondering are you able to take them one after another?

because the meal insulin taken at 12 noon is gone by 8 pm obviously and my body is on the lantus only at that point. Also because i wake up high in the mornings.... sorry to use you as my nurse, but you are bing so helpful and quite honestly if you're up to this, i really don't want to wait until october to figure these things out! I can't believe they advise tight control but then tell you to wait until october to see a nurse for eduction!

I have been using insulin pens for years. And they are so much more convenient. I have just switched fom NPH to Lantus. And the Lantus pen has been withdrawn from the market. But the cartridges fit perfectly in a Humalog pen.

Is it common for someone with type 2 diabetes to be on Humalog 3X daily and Lantus 1X daily?

I am currently using Lantus and Novolog. Drs. advice is to start with 40 units of Lantus and up it 2 units every third day until I get a fasting BG of less then 130. Is it more important to get to my Lantus goal on a consistant basis before I try to adjust my Novolog?

Hello. I am T1 since Oct 2004, and switched to Lantus in Feb. Most of my BG numbers are very good (A1Cs 6.0 and 5.5), but since switching to Lantus, I have experienced 5 episodes of sudden and extreme drops in BG. They happen late morning, not related to breakfast, novolog dose or exercise. My BG is usually above 150 when it starts, and I must consume 150-200 grams of carbs (as juice or gel) to get it to stabilize, usually in 20-30 mins.

I have been type 1 diabetic for 24 years now (female), and I am using lantus(once a day) and humalog(3 times) for the last 5 years. between bedtime and breakfast I am having a drop in BGs of around 10-13 mmols. and then in the mornings, after breakfast BGs shoot up, so my normal carb-insulin ratio doesnt work well. I cannot understand why this overnight drop is happening, which is becoming scary. I tested BGs during the night and there seems to be a drop of 2 mmol/hour.

I have tried correlating it with high doses of H due to high carb intake and then a possible mixing of the H with the Lantus. Neither theory panned out. Does anyone have any similar experiences? I was warned by nurse that I might have reactions to the Lantus, but have not been able to get back to the clinic to find out if this is a normal reaction that will go away. So far, it does wax and wane so my motivation is confused. Will this go away after awhile?

Yes, you can take Novolog and Lantus in separate injections, but they may not be mixed in the same injection or at the same injection site. Generally Novolog is only prescribed if you follow a strict physician-approved routine. If you have a meter and strictly monitor results of various combinations under vary circumstances use of both medications should cause no problems. Be careful using the Novolog because you can easily drop your blood sugar to very low levels.

The main concern I would have about the addition to Lantus 20 units daily would be the risk of low blood sugar, especially in combination with glimepiride. Both Lantus and glimepiride can cause low blood sugar or hypoglycemia. Just make sure you're watching for the signs of low blood sugar, which are, sudden headache, feeling shaky, and weakness. There are many more signs of hypoglycemia and I encourage you to research it more yourself.

She is on 4 shots a day, 2 with breakfast which is Insulatard ( 9 units ) and 3 and half units of Novorapid. She gets 2 units of Novorapid with evening meal and 2 units of Insulatard with bedtime snack. We are finding it very difficult to bring her sugars down within her target range.

I eat pretty healthy now and exercise alot but my levels seem to be all over the place still. I am on 25units of novorapid before breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea and 45units of lantus before i go to bed. I have been on insulin for nearly 38 years and am lucky enough to have no complications so believe I have managed my control pretty well. However since starting to use Lantus (and I was one of the first users in the UK) I have stopped having real problems with hypos but have had great problems with consistency of delivery. This has happened in early afternoon and after dinner. She is on Novalog and NPH before breakfast and Novalog and lantus in the evening. The fact that it has happened two different times in day is why I "hoped" this was a diluted reading rather than actual blood glucose reading. I use a short-acting insulin, Novolog, and a 24-period insulin, Lantis. I give Novolog with each meal, and Lantus when I go to bed. I am having troubles with my sugars in the morning. I wake up at 7am, and eat breakfast. I give my shot immediately after eating breakfast, around 7:20. I test my sugar before I eat breakfast and it is normally good. Then at 8am, I head to school. When I arrive at school around 9am, I test my sugar, which is usually pretty high (200-300).

Do not dilute Lantus and do not mix Lantus with any other type of insulin. And, do not switch to another brand or type of insulin or change the dose or dosage time of any type of insulin you are using without first talking to your doctor.
